What would you name your kids?

Alright, here's Mad Hatteress Belial's guide of naming your kids (This only applies to English speaking countries).

1. When you chose to name your child after a common noun, be careful. Names like Melody and Grace are fine, but don't go overboard and chose something bizar like Stone, Sky, or Ocean. Also, you're daughter may get unwanted attention if you pick the name Chasity. Further more, enough with Mercedes! The name is NOT pretty for a girl!

2. Putting un-needed Ys in your child's name does not make it "newer" or "hip"; if anything, it looks odd, and it's still pronounced like the original way. Changing the spelling isn't a good idea, either. Leave Stephanie this way, not Stefeny; it just looks like you weren't sure how to spell the name you wanted.

3. Choosing a foreign sounding name because you think it sounds "exotic" or "unique" might not have the best results. Make sure it isn't too over the top and you know for sure what it means.

4. Just don't name your kids after celebrities or fictional characters you like; they're going to get made fun of, and it's reflection of how sad you are as a parent. "Oh, I just love my daughter, Uma Therman Smith!"

5. Keep your last name in mind when picking name. If your last name is Head, for the love of God, don't name the kid Richard. When in doubt, say the whole name out loud so you don't make a horrible discovery later and also consider nicknames.

6. Names are only suppose to consist of letters; keep dashes and commas out of it!

7. Naming you kids all with the same first letter was never "cute" in the first place, but if you chose to do this, and you run out of "normal" names for one, don't give the poor kid something like Enus.

Ah! Mori does mean death?! Well, that completely changes my view on it. ^^;;

I can't help but think those are directed towards me. (most likely not. I'm not starting anything) In my case, since I'm 50% Italian, I'm very fond of Italian names.

I agree about "naming kids after celebrities and fictional characters" thing. Infact my mom's maiden name is Wendy Darling. Yes, like from Peter Pan. And yes, her brother's name is Peter.

I know someone from a Dragon Ball message board mentioned "Gohan" as being a good name. Gohan? People are gonna instantly make the connection. Not to mention it means MEAL. You might as well name your other kids "Diner", and "Lunch". >_>;

Though I will admit I got the names "Marina" and "Mori" from two anime series. What can I say? I really like those names.

Okay, most kids wouldn't even know what Mori means in the first place, so that would still be a cute name. ^^

But I wouldn't give my kids an extra hard time because of a name like Gohan. I think it means rice, but I'm not very sure.
I don't think that Gohan is a bad name, of course not, but it just sounds weird because you stick out of the crowd. Originality isn't always good. You know what will happen.

So I'll stick to simple, yet beautiful names. I mean, if you use a foreign name, think about it: Some people mispronounce it quite often, like in my class where's someone named Simon Kerry. You _could_ think it was on the American side, but the teachers are always confused and pronounce his name in French. And that sounds really bad. You don't want to always have to point out how your name is written, pronounced, etc. It's annoying ^^°

Oh, another one of my rants... can't keep my mouth shut, sorry ^^°°°

They're not at all; I'll better explain.

As you ARE Italian, it's not foreign to YOU and it makes sense that you would pick an Italian name. I'm talking about, say, someone who doesn't have a drop of Native American blood in them and decides to pick a word from their language as their child's name without knowing 100% what it means. For all you know, you could be naming your child "Fart", or something.

I hope that clears things up.

It seems like the theme of the list is that you should only choose normal names, and not a name that is unique to your child. I do not agree that that should be a rule. If you want your child to blend, you should probably choose a common name. If you want your child to be unique and unusual, giving them an unusual name would be an asset.

Okay, I'm going to name my first daughter Fifi Twinkerbelle.

Giving a kid a weird name doesn't make them unique or special from anyone else, and I didn't say that the theme is giving them normal names; it's being CAREFUL when you choose to give your kids a "unique" name. Don't you think an American kid would get teased in school if you named them, let's say, "Ranko" because you thought it sounded Aisan?

EDIT: I happened to find a list that puts what I'm saying in a bit "nicer" light:

Generally avoid nouns. You're asking for trouble.
Do a Google search for your name ideas. If all you get are porn sites, white supremicist groups and pictures of My Little Ponies - it's a bad name.
Look at lists of the most popular baby names for the last three years. Steer clear of the top 10, and definitely steer clear of any names that suddenly jump from #150 to #25.
No celebrity names. Your kids will immediately hate this celebrity, and be horribly embarassed forever.
If you like a common name, but don't like how it's spelled, tough. Either use the usual spelling, or find a new name. Andrywe is NOT a name.
Most Americans are assimilated cultural mutts, without much connection to their ancestry. If you want to reconnect with your heritage, go to the library. Do not name your kid Bronwyn and think you are now in touch with your 1/16 Welsh side.
A stupid sounding name is still a stupid sounding name even if its meaning is "beloved queen" or something else nice.
Do not name your kid with elementary school bullies in mind. If it isn't incredibly obvious (Gaylord, Fartoff), they're going to get that little bit teased like the rest of us were, and there's nothing you can do about it.
Try these on for size: "Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I'd like to introduce you to the new CEO of MultiGlobal Corp., [blank blank]" or "Also on the presidential panel is MIT's chief biochemical researcher, Dr. [blank blank].
Assuming your child will live to age 70, s/he will spend 16% of their life as a child, 10% of their life as teenagers and 14% as senior citizens. The remaining 60% of their lives they will be adults. Plan accordingly.

...and after reading it, I can't help but agree. Especially with this line: So if you subscribe to the theory that giving boys names to girls will make them stronger, this fact defeats the purpose. It also drastically shrinks the size of the male name pool. For all of us who like Aidan and Brendan as boys' names, we'll soon be out of luck!

It'd be pretty annoying if I wanted to name my little boy, say, Anthony, but that suddenly became a more girly name, and people tell me, "WTF why the hell would you give your boy a girl's name what's wrong with you?" And I'm all, "0__o Huh? It's a BOY'S name!"
And pretty soon all the boys' names are gone. And I am not going to name my little boy Earl (no offense to anyone who likes that name).

I think that's beautiful.

Could you give me an example of a carefully chosen name that is still unique and unusual? And if a kid is teased, it is 100% the fault of the teasers, and I would demand of all my child's peers that they treat him or her with respect.

In the first place, what if it's a celebrity with a common name, like Tom? In the second, you can't say with certainty that they will hate the celebrity and be embarressed.

If I choose the spelling of a name, then I am right and everyone else is wrong.

Here's the way I see it: if I had a kid, I would love that kid so much I would consider him or her to be the greatest person in the history of the world. It then becomes everyone else's responsibility to defer to my child and ensure that he or she has the best life possible. Therefore, the name I give should be as a sacred word, and therefore my choice, whatever it should be, is perfect.

In regards to that, I still don't see Jordan as a girl's name, but I've never heard of people naming the daughters some of the stuff that was listed.

As for boys who've been named girl's names that I've actually heard, here's one I didn't like: Tracey, (If Musashi notices this one, I know she's going to comment) Ashley, and Kim.

And don't forget the boy named Sue...

Well, while I agree with the first one, all I gonna say is this to point number 2: Most of them just _don't_, at age 8 or so, it seems almost normal, but if you, suppose, gave your kid a "weird" name with an unusual spelling and so on, no matter how perfect you are, you also don't suffer the consequences. You can approve of a name, but if a kid gets teased once in a while because of its name, then probability has it that your kid will start to dislike the name.

It's easy for you to say your choice is perfect. That's normal, most people think so. But it can very well backfire, so I _wouldn't_ name my kid "Fifi" or something like that.

Don't get me wrong, that's by no means an offense. Everyone should do as they please ^^

I will not turn this into a flame war, so I'm ending this fued before it starts. You and I don't see eye-to-eye on many things, and nothing is going to change that.

In other words, I like this thread and don't want to risk it being locked. Just the fact that Fifi Twinkerbelle was called "beautiful" scares me to no end, though.

For the list: I've hardly, if ever seen the things listed happen and doing some of them isn't always bad. Like unusual spelling: I've seen the name "Rachel" spelled "Rachyl" before and I actually like it better that way. There are also a ton of names where adding y in place of ie works.

However, naming your kid Brooks is just wrong. Just because it's a running shoe company and the last name of a country singer does NOT make it a good first name. If it's gonna be first, leave it singular (Brook or Brooke)

Foreign names are fine in my opinion, just as long as it's not insanely difficult to pronounce. I'm sure a lot of people won't know or care what it means, especially kids.

Incorporating a celebrity's full name doesn't happen a whole lot O_o Wouldn't be surprised if it did, however.

As for the last name thing, there are certain last names that regardless of what you name your kid, they're going to get teased somehow (IE: Bush)

These days you can't be too sure. While it's true, that probably most Ryanns are girls, some creative parents are also using alternative spellings for boys. For example, baby boys Brandyn and Huntyr were born in my town this year. Besides, When you yell "RRROOOOBBBBYYYYYNNN!!" On a crowded playground, you aren't going to spell it out! My friend spells it Robyn (although the irritating orphan bitch who always used to annoy us spelt it Rybin for some reason).

You know, with the exception of Robin Williams, I don't think I've ever heard the name Robin used for a boy. I've always seen it used for girls.
