Those fluent in another language, please help!

Post by peachvampiress » Thu Jun 24, 2004 2:42 am

If anyone is fluent in another language besides English could you please help me with a very important project I'm working on. I am writing a poem for this project, which I wrote out in English and intend to have translated into several different languages. Basically, each line is spoken in one of 22 different languages which include, but are not limited to:
Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Russian, Polish, Welsh, Dutch, Greek, Romanian, Swedish, Turkish, Albanian, Portuguese, Arabic, Punjabi, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese.

If anyone can help me translate a line into one of these languages, PM me and I'll send you the line. Also, if I already have a line translated, feel free to proof read it for me if you want. The first three languages, Latin, French and Spanish, are especially needed right now.

However, I'm going to say this now. Please only help if you're fluent in another language, or it's you're first language. Not if "you've been studying a bit for a few years" or "can carry a decent conversation". I really can't afford to have this screwed up with incorrect translations.

Thank you to anyone who can/will help me ^_^ :a million glomps:

P.S. Tiff gave me permission create this topic. No harm can come to be so long as I am protected my the aura of the Tiffu. :angelic voices and shield of pink genkiness:

Well, I'll PM you but since I want to answer your topic without PMing and... *sees all the confused glares* ... just saying, seems like a very interesting project, I hope Tiffu lets you post it when it's done n_n

Unfortunately not, for three important reasons. One from her, two from me.

1) It's promotion of one's work.

2) This particualr topic can not only be viewed by the 261 registered members, but by anyone else who sees. If anyone stole it I'd would be very sad, upset, and apocalypticley pissed off.

3) As much as I'd appriciate it, I don't want hundreds of people saying "What's this for" What's it about".

If you want to know, I'll PM you when I'm done ^_^.

You're going to have a really hard time finding someone fluent in LATIN. Plus there aren't anymore native speakers living asfar as I know o_O I know enough to read Latin poetry. And I know Spanish well.

I'd love to help because I like translating stuff. But I wouldn't say I'm fluent in either of those lanugages (especially not Latin). I also did take classes in French and Japanese but far from fluent...

What's ironic is that in my first year of high school there was a teacher fluent in Latin, but left the next year (which was about four months before I decided to write the poem -_-). There's an abby close to where I live, so I might have some luck there.

Thanks for the offer of help, although Akarui Kibuno helped me with the French line, and I'm going to have a Japanese friends translate a line when school starts again.

And guys, I know I said I really need Latin, French and Spanish now, and I really appriciate the help I've recieved, but I do need the other languages, so don't be shy ^_^.

I am not a native speaker, but I speak Spanish at a near-fluent level, and I can have my grandmother double-check to make sure everything makes sense. I'm more than willing to help. ;)

If you have AIM, you can contact a machine with the screen name Smarterchild. Just ask it to translate from English to whatever language you want. I will copy and paste what it does if I asked it to translate the phrase, "I Love You" from English to German. Here's the conservation:

SAILORSCOUTFAN: translate english to german
SmarterChild: what word or phrase would u like me 2 translate from english to german?
SAILORSCOUTFAN: I Love You
SmarterChild: translated from english 2 german, "i love you" becomes "ich liebe dich."

Hope that helps.

Thank you, but I don't have AIM. Also, I'd rather have people help me with this, as then I know it will be more accurate.

Actually, it only does five languages. I tried to do Japanese, and it wouldn't. It does:

SmarterChild: I can't translate into Japanese. I can translate English into these languages:

1 French
2 German
3 Italian
4 Portuguese
5 Spanish

That's still pretty freakin cool.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

freetranslation.com will do the same thing. However, machine translations are definitely not the same as human ones. For example, I'm translating that last sentence into Spanish:

"However, machine translations are definitely not the same as human ones."
Spanish: "Sin embargo, las traducciones automáticas definitivamente no son los mismo que humanos. "
And back to English: "However, machine translations till definitely not the be me ace human ones. "

I wouldn't put too much faith in them, but they're nice for getting the general idea of a webpage in a foreign language, or if you lost your German/English dictionary for the 553rd time like Anthy does.

I admit it's a good site for translating, but my friends says it's not always reliable since it mixes words up and makes a sentence in a complete mess, but then again it's worth a try.

speaking of languages i'm 1/3 Italian but can't speak fluent Italian at all which i find surprising and annoying because i always wanted to speak a fluent language like japanese for example.

^_^; okay... I'm getting desperate now. I am changing my plea slightly. If anyone KNOWS someone else who is fluent in another language, I would appriciate it if you would take the line to said person. This means you don't have to know the language, just someone who speaks it FLUENTLY. That would be greatly appriciated.

I have the French and Spanish lines done, so feel free to help me with another language.

er... I speak pig latin and gibberish fluently....

EDIT: Eh, what can I say? It takes years to learn a language, and frankly, I don't have that kind of patience yet.

I know two people who speak Chinese fluently (A friend and my math teacher), come the new year (that's when I go back to school) I can probably help you ^^

Me: This is coming from the kid who doesn't know what Viagra is!
Ko: It's cold medicine, right?
Our Group: NO!!!
Me: Can I just say?
Dylan: Sure, it's no weirder than what normally comes out of your mouth.
Me: (says what)
Ko: .....What's that?
Me: ......*starts crying*
Carley: STEVE! STEVE GET OVER HERE AND TELL KO WHAT VIAGRA DOES!
Steve: See, it's like this: The bridge goes up and the soldiers rush out....

Tiff: Aww, you killed someone for me. That's so sweet in a f***ed up sort of way!

Mandrin, both of them. In fact, during Math Class they had a five min conversation in Mandrin to each other ^^;; We were all sitting there like "Wha..?"
