Minor Computer Problems

Post by Cardcaptor Takato » Fri Jun 18, 2004 7:41 am

I hate to sound like a nuisance by always asking for computer help here, but I don't know much about computers and this site is reliable in computer help, so why not...? These aren't really major problems I'm having but they're kind of annoying, so I'd like to get them solved. Ok, first of all, lately I've been having some problems with the desktop background. We have those different usernames on our computer that you sign into before you can do anything on the computer (we're using XP). Normally, when we change the desktop background (we as in my family) it only appears on your username that you changed it on, but lately, when you change the desktop background, it appears on everyone's username. How do you change it back so that any desktop background changes you make on your username are made on your username only?

I'm also having some problems with the mouse. I'm not sure how to explain it, but it's like it's become very senstive to my touch. For example, if I click the back arrow once on my web browser, it'll take me back two or three pages instead of just one. I have to click on IM windows to get them to stay still long enough for me to type my message in. Sometimes I also have problems with highlighting because when I try to highlight something, it doesn't stay highlighted long enough for me to right-click so I can copy and paste. I've tried cleaning out my mouse, but no matter how many times I try (and sometimes it's clean but still messes up), it still doesn't work right. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Ok, first off, does the desktop background issue apply to all usernames, or only certain ones?

Secondly, it SEEMS that your mouse might have a sensitive double-click. Go to Control Panel -> Mouse and see if you can adjust the double-click speed to make it a bit easier to use. If that doesn't work...there might be a problem with the mouse itself, in which case you might need to replace it ^^;; Unless of course someone else knows another solution to this :P

Hope this all helps!

I adjusted the speed for the mouse like you explained to me to do, but I'm not sure if it helped yet or not and the desktop issue is for all usernames.

My guess would be that everyone on the computer has administrator access, and for some reason whenever a background is changed it's changing everyone's background.

Is this just a recent problem, or has it been going on for some time? Also, were there any changes to the User accounts or profiles (or anything else for that matter) prior to the problem occurring, or did it just happen for no apparent reason?

As for problem #2, what kind of mouse are you using? If it's an optical mouse (particularly Microsoft's Intellimouse - I used to have one), it could be the mouse itself. After a year or so, whenever I would single click something, the mouse would sometimes interpret it as a double-click. This lead to launching programs twice, problems with highlighting text, etc.

This is apparently a common problem (I did some searches and found many references to this problem, most of which referenced Microsoft mice). I tried all sorts of things to fix it (looked for software updates, tried uninstalling the mouse, etc.), and nothing worked. The same problem also occurred when I tried the mouse on other computers. However, other mice worked fine on my computer, so it was obvious that the mouse wasn't working right.

My solution was to buy a different mouse (I bought a Logitech optical mouse) and since then I've had no single/double-click problems.

For you, if possible, I would suggest trying the mouse on different computers and seeing if the same problem crops up. Also, try different mice on the computer. If they don't show the problem, then it's almost certainly the mouse.

This a recent problem that didn't start until a day or two ago. The only change that's been made to the user accounts was that I made my user account password protected, but that was done months ago.

I'm using a regular mouse with the mouse ball and it's a Microsoft mouse.

I've tried asking my dad if we could buy another mouse, but he won't let us do it. He's extermely cheap and doesn't like having to spend money to replace something and tries to fix it himself first. We both tried cleaning the mouse but it still doesn't work. I just wish we'd get a new one.

I can't think of anything about the first problem, but the mouse, just buy a new one. You can't fix it, trust me I've tried. My mouse before the one I have now started doing that kind of stuff, which was something I was able to deal with for a few weeks, but then when I was starting to work with lots of code, where often I'll copy and paste from my own work or from mod files (for fourm mods) to other files, it bacame a big pain in the ass. It was an optical mouse, so there was really nothing to clean, so I took it apart to see if I could do anything about the clicking mechanism, and got nowhere. I decided to deal with it for a little while longer before I literally just took it out of the system and chucked it somewhere, probably smahed the thing too whle I was at it. Borrowed a mouse from Hugh to get me by until I got a new one. ^^;;; Not too long after, I used my spare finaicial aid money to get myself a wireless keyboard/mouse combination. Best use of finaical money ever, and the clicky problem was gone. Overall, get a new mouse, you probably won't be able to fix it (I'd expect only people who make them or do actual repair jobs would be able to fix it), and you'd probably spend more money repairing it than purchasing a new one, if there's even places that can repair it.

I also had some problems with my mouse like the way my mouse wouldn't move into a certain direction as properly as it should which is completely annoyin :? , most of the time it's just that the mouse ball needs cleaning or something similar to it but sometimes that's not the case. Hell, i've bought 3 mouses over the last 2 years o_0. Buying a new mouse has to be the best thing to do though, as you can see i've done this many times! They're very cheap to buy nowadays so it should be no problem to buy one from a electronics store of some kind.

As for the types of mouses, i normally like the new smaller mouses, people say they're harder to use which i agree with, but i think i only like them because of the size ^^. I haven't got one myself or don't recommend one, but i might buy a smaller one since my mouse is most probably gonna break again in a year's time!

I just tried changing my desktop background again, then went to check to see if any of the other username's desktop backgrounds were change...and it seems everything's back to normal. I have no clue why it did that for the few days it was, but it was very strange. Thanks to everyone who offered their suggestions to help and I'll definetly be looking into buying a new mouse. My problem is asking my parents if we can buy another one. ><
