Scoliosis

Post by Celexa » Sat Jun 05, 2004 8:49 pm

How many people here have scoliosis? I'm not sure if I still have it, but I know that I did at least have it, and my back was bent at an extremely lucky either 8.5 degrees, 14.5 degrees or 5.5 degrees, I'm not sure which. (We're talking about 5 years ago) but I know my mom has it. How about the rest of you?

Me: This is coming from the kid who doesn't know what Viagra is!
Ko: It's cold medicine, right?
Our Group: NO!!!
Me: Can I just say?
Dylan: Sure, it's no weirder than what normally comes out of your mouth.
Me: (says what)
Ko: .....What's that?
Me: ......*starts crying*
Carley: STEVE! STEVE GET OVER HERE AND TELL KO WHAT VIAGRA DOES!
Steve: See, it's like this: The bridge goes up and the soldiers rush out....

Tiff: Aww, you killed someone for me. That's so sweet in a f***ed up sort of way!

I had a test ran on me for it, but I didn't have it.

As I mentioned in the other thread, my back is bent at 50 degrees. That's not extremely severe, but once a spine curvature hits 50 degrees or over, it's time to get something done about it. I'm going to be operated on most likely towards the end of summer.

I had the choice of whether or not I wanted to go through with it, and I said yes since my curve would only get worse if it were to be left untreated. In fact, it had already gotten slightly worse (the curve was only at 48 degrees when I was officially diagnosed with scoliosis a couple months previous).

When I was in Junior High, they required a scoliosis test be done on everyone in the 7th grade. I did not have it when I was tested and I don't have it now.

*Raises hand*

Question! Do you develop Scoliosis from things such as..I dunno, bad posture? Or is it something that one is born with without much explanation?

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

I can't say that I know much about it, but I don't think people are born with it.

Ooh ooh I know!

Some people can be born with it, but most develop it from bad posture.

There are two tests you can do, one a whole lot more reliable than the other.

1) Go get an official test.

2) A self test is take you hand and reach up you back as high as you can go. Move your hand down on your spine in a straight line. If you feel your spine the whole time you don't, if your hand moves even slightly from the center of your spine you do.

I had an extreme case of it, bad enought to warrant TWO surgeries, 200+ stitches, 1,000,000,000,000 different types of pills, and excruciating pain.

it was a 120 degree curve, and I now have lots of rods in it straightening it out. If you were to feel my back now, you can feel the metal

I sympathize with you Sailor Sapphire! I had to have surgery for scoliosis too, and it creeps me out how much you can feel the rods in my back...

I've had scoliosis for about 3 and a half years. The stupid thing is that we had those screenings at school and everyone told me that I was fine. It was only after I had to have a physical done that my doctor discovered that I had it. And by then it was over 20 degrees...

I had the surgery last summer, and also had to go through physical therapy because my shoulders were very stiff and painful.

The sad thing is to this day I still don't know how I got it... :?: _ :?:

It wasn't totally bad though...although I was so weak after the surgery, my mom and grandma had to take turns spoonfeeding me dinner(they stayed with me that first night after the surgery).

Not to mention I was under a lot of other stuff to the point of hallucinating (my mom seems to get a kick out of telling people about one particular hallucination I had...but I look back on it now and think "I did THAT???")

However, my sis brought me some SM manga to read and taped the episodes for me. (I read the entire S manga while recovering)

Ugh, I hate getting tested for scoliosis. I myself don't have it, although I'm surprised I don't because my posture sucks. ^^;; I don't know anyone personally who's had to get surgery for it.
