Greatest Movies Ever

Post by Rindesayu » Fri Jun 04, 2004 12:46 pm

Well, we've had several "favorite film" threads, but overall, what would you say are just some of the best films ever created?, animated, live action, or otherwise (and you don't have to go in-depth if you don't want to)?

My list is:

Toy Story (the original.. AND sequel... I guess)
Shrek (the original)
The Green Mile
Shawshank Redemption
Edward Scissorhands
Donnie Darko
End Of Evangelion (yeah, I hated the series with the exception of the first six episodes, but the movie was incredible)
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Grave Of The Fireflies
Only Yesterday
The Exorcist
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

There are tons of other movie masterpieces, but I'm not the biggest movie buff in the world, so...

Mine would be The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original movie. It's just so horrfying and gory, that it can actually live you speechless, like it did for me. Plus, it's very original, especially when it takes some things from the real story of the canibal Ed Gein. Besides, who cannot love the scene were Leatherface dances with his chainsaw in the streets at the end of the flick. *takes a breath* I just can't say how great enough this movie is! However, some fans who just want gore may not like this film

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (GRACE!!!)
Pirates of the Caribbean (But why is the rum gone?!)
Shrek (1st and 2nd. Puss is damn hilarious. ^^)
School of Rock (Damn funny. "But the legend of the rent was way past due!")
Spiderman (Tobey Maguire did such a great job in that movie. Priceless.)
The Lion King (THE ORIGINAL. Damn those sequels.)

Attention must be paid to Casablanca. There's a reason it's way up there on the best-of lists--there's not a single frame of the movie that's superfluous (even the songs--they set various moods) and very few that are anything less than 100% of what they could be. Coming into the last scene, you have no idea of how it's going to end, or you may think of several, and then when it's all over you realize no other ending was possible.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

Oh my, how can I be the first one to mention Gone With The Wind? The South, man.

I also think The Passion of the Christ was a fantastic piece of cinematic excellence. I learned a lot about Jews from that movie [/sarcasm].

Edit:

ELIZABETH. Oh my God, what an awesome movie. Go rent it, now.

-Drop Dead Fred

The Megabitch squashed my head! The bitch! God, I love this movie. XD

-The Little Mermaid

NOT the Disney version, but the one TOEI made in 1973. It follows the story VERY closely. All the way down to the sad ending. ; . ;

-The Hot Chick

I don't really care for the main actor, but the movie was so damn funny! Everything was so..random.

-Sleeping Beauty

Now THIS was damn good movie. I wish more Diseny films were like this. Wonderful animation, great acting, the characters being SERIOUS, and a kick ass villain. (Maleficent beats Jafar anydauy >:D)

The Wizard of Oz - it was remarkable at the time it was made, and it's still remarkable many years later.

Gone With the Wind - now this is a book adaptation done right. Incredible acting, too.

I have not seen Casablanca, but I am reserving a place on this list for it.

Beauty and the Beast - I still think this is Disney's best animated feature so far. Gorgeous animation, excellent writing, a fantastic soundtrack, and great performances by the voice actors - there's nothing to nitpick about this.

See it. Soon. In fact, Ni-ban, see it with David, because it's a perfect couples movie.

Oh, one other I thought of: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Maybe the best "buddy" movie ever, and it's funny and sad too.

@_@ I don't feel like typing them all out, so I'll just list three of my favorites off the top of my head.

Edward Scissorhands: Brilliant! I ALWAYS cry at the end. The message the movie sends is just so beautiful. That and Danny Elfman's soundtrack is one of his bests. The way the music choreographs is amazing and adds so much to the scenes.
The end when Kim's telling her granddaughter how Edward's still alive, when she says "Sometimes, you can still catch me dancing in it" then the music grows louder and greater and shows Edwards sculptures T_T I always start balling then.
Carrie:Again, beautiful story, beautiful music. Despite what people say, I think that the shower scene was tastefully done (and the music was gorgeous). I loved the whole story and how at least two people cared about Carrie and wanted to help her (Yes Tommy (her date) did care about her. I've heard many people say that he hated her, he didn't, read the book. It explains that he fell in love with her at the dance).

Jesus Christ Super Star (1973):@_@?? Why people get offened at this, I don't know. I'm deeply religious and I love this movie, it's one of the most powerful movies I've seen. But I swear to Blarg, if I hear one more person say how "innacurate" this movie is I'm going to hurt something. You mean they didn't have machine guns, artilleray, paper money, and lingure (sp?) wearing hookers two thousand years ago?¬_¬ Funny, I could have sworn that they were symbols that connected to modern day. nitpicking whiners aside, definately a great movie (and amazing music).

WAI! Another Edward Scissorhands lover! :D

Speaking of Carrie (which was a great movie, yes), I could hardly believe Sissy Spacek (who played Carrie) was in her late 20's in that movie. She looked a lot younger.

:High fives and glomps: A little OT, but some interesting trivia from www.imdb.com
George Lucas and Brian De Palma held a joint audition for Carrie (1976) and Star Wars (1977). Originally, Sissy Spacek was cast as Princess Leia, and Carrie Fisher as Carrie. However, Carrie Fisher refused to appear in nude scenes, but Spacek was willing to do them. So, they switched parts.
 I can't see Spacek as Leia, nor can I picture Fisher as Carrie (she looked way to old).

Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

well, it dosen't really make fun of the catholic religion... It just turns all kinds of christian belifs around, mess them up, etc...

For example: God is a woman, and Jesus was black. Also, there were 13 aposels.

really strange idea, but really funny.

Oh, man. I just witnessed another masterpiece last night: Monster (2003), starring Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci.

It's based off of the story of Aileen Wuornos, highway prostitute and America's first female serial killer. Beautiful, occasionally violent, uber-depressing, and tremendously well-acted (Theron deserved that Oscar she received for her astounding performance as Aileen), it's well-worth your time. Just make sure you don't have an aversion to lesbian relationships...

Dogma doesn't mock anything, actually. It makes you THINK about religion, makes you wonder abuot some of the things they bring up. I don't think it's fair to make a judgement abuot the movie without seeing it, peachvampiress. It's a mixture of entertainment and an expression of religious ideas.

Also, if you think about Jesus being black...he WAS from Jerusalem, according to the bible, and therefore he wouldn't exactly be lily-white now would he? He may not be as black as the movie makes him out to be, but he certainly wouldn't be as white as I.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
