Making file sizes smaller...

Post by crazydiamond » Wed Jun 02, 2004 10:28 pm

How can I make an image's file size smaller? Like, I have some pics I want to use as avatars, and they're the right size pixel-wise, but they're too big kb-wise. Is there a way to make that smaller without making the pics smaller? If not, I guess I'll just make the pics smaller. I don't have any spiffy photo editting software, either.

What i do is I don't enlarge the picture first and then copy and paste it onto paint, leave the picture as it is (preferably small) and then the size of the picture file should be under 10 kb at least.

get IFranView. It's a free software that decreases your file size, but keeps the quality of the image. That's what I use.

We might have, now that I think about it. I think it was on the old board, tho. I didn't even think to check. Sorry, Tiff. :( Anyway, I'll get IFranView. Then, FINALLY, I can change my avatar. Won't *that* be disorienting! Whee! **edit** Tiff, do you mean Irfanview? I did a google search for it and it wanted to know if that's what I meant. Is it from Tucows?

If you can get your hands on Photoshop, its "Save For Web" option is excellent for reducing filesize. I think you can get a trial version from Adobe.com, but it's a pretty big download, so it might not be an option if you're on dialup.

The GIMP has a similar option as Photoshop, and it's free. The installation is a little complicated, but there are step-by-step directions, and it's not that bad. You can get it from http://www.gimp.org/.

Thanks, babeh. *Glomp* I thought so.

But since this is a topic devoted JUST to file-size programs, i'll keep it.

I apologize some more, then, Tiff, now that there's actual evidence. Sorry. I should look around more before askin' my questions. *thwacks herself with the redundant topic stick* Anway, I gots it and it works some good! *points* Whee avatar! Everyone should get Irfanview! It takes almost NO time to download, and I'm on dial-up even (a minute and a half). I (heart) it some lots, I do.

I'm gonna stray off-topic for a second here and praise the wonders of Irfanview for a while. Not only can it help you alter the size of images without severly compromising image quality, it's also a great image browser/slide show, replacing the built-in one provided by Microsoft and outshining it in every way.

Now, I shall be off, for the true admins come bearing off-topic sticks, and I much fear their wrath *scampers up a tree*.
