Favorite Modern film classics (1980-)

Post by DuoTheShinigami02 » Fri May 28, 2004 3:33 pm

This is a follow-up to the topic "Favourite film classics". And the rule is that the movies had to be made from 1980 onward.

My favorites are as follows (in no particular order):

Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Clerks
Chasing Amy
Forrest Gump
The Indiana Jones trilogy
Scarface
Spider-Man (the best comics-to-film since Tim Burton's Batman)
There's Something About Mary
"After all these years, you know it's not about control. It's about trying to do everything I can. And for you, it's about setting an example. Everyone looks up to you. They listen to you. If you tell them to fight, they'll fight. But they need to be inspired, and let's face it, 'Superman'...the last time you really inspired anyone... was when you were dead." -- Batman, to Superman, Infinite Crisis, issue 1

All 3 Scary Movies (Funniest one is Scary Movie 2)
Not Another Teen Movie
Daylight
The Hot Chick

That's all I can think of as of now.

Movies in the '80s suffered a significant dropoff in quality, and the only real quality to come out of the mainstream were Ferris Beuller's Day Off and The Princess Bride.

A revival came about in the '90s, and there was some good stuff. Just from 1994, there was Shawshank Redemption, Ed Wood, Forrest Gump, The Lion King, and Pulp Fiction. All great. All five Tarantinos (or four, if you want to combine the Kill Bills) were good.

Another of my favorites is Glengarry Glen Ross. Great acting, lots of emotion. So what if the emotions are all bad?

Duo mentioned Clerks--great stuff. Kevin Smith really fell off after that though.

Ummm. . . let's see, the Sailor Moon movies were all in the 90s. The S movie is on my list.

Lemme hit the IMDB, see if there's any giants I've missed. Oh, yeah, The Usual Suspects. Though it suffers somewhat after the first viewing. I've always thought someone should write a fanfic where the Witches 5 meet up in a police lineup and wind up working unawares for Professor Tomoe. They could call it The Eudial Suspects. *dodges thrown fruit* This movie also has the coolest name for a character ever in Keyser Soze. If I were named Keyser Soze, no one would mess with me.

Also the movie Seven. (Which is how it should be spelled) In fact, anything with Kevin Spacey.

OK, I think that's it. At least until I get to see Finding Kame, Lord of the Kame, and Kame Fighter.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

Okay...

Ferris Bueller's Day Off:   oh man this is funny... with the counseler getting attacked by the dog, everything that happens to him... XD just too funny to put in a post.

The Matrix: No, NOT the sequels, the sequels sucked. The original, New special effects Ideas, good plot, and no obsessive fighting scenes, about equal time with real world and Matrix.

All Pixar movies: Anyone else think all of their movies are kickass? These guys know A LOT about making movies... unlike Disney. :P

All Jim Carrey's Comedies: Jim carrey rocks, it's a fact. IMO. He is one of the FUNNIEST men alive.

(EDIT) wrong word
Father of the Bride, I and II: These are funny. just comical... I love it when Steve Martin's character freaks out... XD

and I could go on and on...

True. And his semi-serious ones like Truman Show. In fact, I like his serious stuff better.
Mother of the Bride, I and II: These are funny. just comical... I love it when Steve Martin's character freaks out... XD
Ano. . . I think those were Father of the Bride. And I found them, at least the first one, a little mean-spirited. Martin's character is unrealistically attatched to his daughter, and acts like a jerk. As opposed to acting like The Jerk, which is a good thing.

Pixar is breaking off and becoming its own company, and I believe even when it was under Disney, it had creative control.

I really should add more of Miyasaki's films to that list, as well.

2. The Princess Bride
3. The Matrix
4. Beaches
5. Kill Bill
6. Pulp Fiction
7. Interview with the Vampire
8. Moulin Rouge
9. Shrek
10. Clerks
11. Dogma
12. Chasing Amy
13. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
14. Pretty much all of Jim Carrey's comedies, as yoshmaster said.

*hits self* man I'm forgetful today... Dogma IS very funny...

"You are the great(11-something times)-grandniece, of Jesus Christ." The 13th aposel
"So... Bethany's part black?" jay

XD XD XD there are SO many good scenes in that movie... and Azareal is one of the BEST villians I've seen.

Will Ferrel's 2 movies, Old school and Elf; both are funny... and good actors. Will Ferrel can fit ANY comedy role... just watch the Best of Will Ferrel from Saturday Night Live, and you will see what I mean.

South Park, Bigger, Longer, and Uncut: I am a south park fanatic... so I don't need to say anything. 8)

Chris Farley's Movies: Have you noticed by now I am a major fan of comedy? If not... you need to learn more about them. the 3 movies of his I've seen are all good... Tommy Boy, Remember the toy car scene... XD "And the medic arive, and they go 'Oh my god' and the new guy's puken in the back! 'PLUH! PLUH!'" ; Beverely Hills Ninja, just some scenes in this are classic. when he goes into the strip club and starts DANCING with all the women there... XD XD XD Chris Rock's character is also comical; Black Sheep, some scenes are REALLY funny... when the roof flys off the cabin, David Spade is mocking Chris's character, and the bunk bed collapsses. And David Spade is on the bottom. XD

I can't think of any others at the moment.

Princess Bride (although the book was both more exciting and funnier)

ET The Extra-Terrestrial

Total Recall (one of a kind--an actioner that gets you to THINK)

Minority Report (OK, TWO of a kind)

Jurassic Park- It's influenced just about every depiction of dinosaurs since (the JP T-rex's roar has become the standard large dinosaur/monster roar since JP came out...)

And for Carrie, I assume you're talking about the modern remake, becaus the old one is also from the '70s. Great movies all, and though they seem like modern movies, they're pre-'80s.

Maybe a better term is breaking away... Considering the state Disney is in, it almost certainly for the better. However, Disney retains the rights to the Pixer films made for Disney... including the right to make sequels of Pixar/Disney films without Pixar's involvement. :(

Back to the subject at hand...

Tron Made in '82. One of the ealiest CGI films. Gave us lightcycles. 'Nuff said.

The Evil Dead Trilogy "Good... Bad... I'm the guy with the gun."

Aliens James Cameron in his prime. "That's it man, game over man, game over, man! Game over!"
You seem like the kind of person who'll lie.
However... this sword doesn't lie.
