I have a question....

Post by kevin-sms » Mon May 03, 2004 11:18 pm

Why's it so bad for a guy to listen to Mariah Carey? I dont get it!
The only reason I listen to her is because she makes me feel good...it's not like music is not all about a person!
People who look at people and say "Eww you listen to that...you must hate yourself" or "You listen to that?!??! You must be gay!"
...Music is not a personality trait!!
Okay Thats all!
Bye

...
I don't listen to Mariah Carey, so I don't really have anything to say about that...but I do agree with you that music isn't a personality trait. I mean, just because I like listening to Weird Al and S Club 7 (who, strangely, remains one of my favorite singing groups even though I don't like pop), people think I'm strange. It bugs me. -__-

I really don't know why people are offended that you like Mariah Carey. She is a very talented singer; however, it's popular now for guys to like harder music. Because Carey is a favorite amongst teenage girls, the "reputation," I suppose, goes along with it. I'll agree with you, it's not very kind to judge someone's worth by what music they listen to, but I assure you that once you get out into the big bad world, no one will really care.

Music may not be a personality trait, but it does help EXPRESS one's character and personality at times. Sometimes the music one chooses directly reflects their beliefs and their passions, not to mentino their attitudes toward life. So people may assume something about you, instead of taking the time to know you. It's not right, but it's natural and understandable.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Tiff
Music may not be a personality trait, but it does help EXPRESS one's character and personality at times.
:starts singing: You and your new oven

are capable of great things,

but remember no two ovens are the same.

That's very true, but I'm sure that it can often confuse people, especially if someone likes a variety of music. Take me, one minute I'm singing Karma Chameleon, the next I'm listening to Gothic Danny Elfman songs. So I guess the moral is, "Don't judge someone by the music they listen to, 'cause it can get very confusing."

:continues singing:Rather than jumping in the deep end

with your brand new oven,

don't forget it may differ in it's cooking characteristic

to your previous model.

EW! it's not cool for anyone to like mariah carey! no, i'm just kidding. i can understand that. just like i'm black and i listen to stuff like slipknot, korn, system of a down and the like. i'm constantly being bothered for this: "your black, why don't you like rap?" what the hell kind of stupid question is that? people like what they like, things like that shouldn't have anything to do with what people like. i just say screw people and what they think of you, but that's just me.

Yeah, I know how you feel. I'm black, too and also am not a fan of rap at all. (Rap and Gospel on the other hand are completely different stories.) People kept on asking me why I don't like rap, and it annoys me. I tried to get into it and watch those horrendous (90% of the time) music videos, but I can't get into it.

I also konw how Kevin feels. I'm a fan of female R&B singers like Mariah Carrey, pre-drugs Whitney Houston (it's not right- but it's okay..I'm gonna make it anyway..), Kelly Price, and Toni Braxton, when according to the black male sterotype, I should be into hard rap, or at least into mainstream rap artists like Jay-Z, Nas, 50 Cent, Chingy, etc.

You're right, Tiff- music's not a personal trait, but it may express one's character and more than not may be a reflection of one's personality...at least in my case.

Do not use "queer" as an insult like that again. That is completely inappropriate.

Music can sometimes be an expression of what we want to say. My collection is bipolar at best--Manson next to celtic harp music, KMFDM next to the Spice Girls...

If your taste in music is bipolar, Anthy, mine is, too. I have Smashing Pumpkins next to Ayumi Hamasaki next to Enigma next to Kylie Minogue next to a Final Fantasy soundtrack. There's really not a genre of music I hate (I strongly dislike a few, but even there I have a few exceptions).

It's hard to judge people at all based on the kind of music they listen to, from my experience. Especially if they listen to a lot of different kinds.

I think my music taste is pretty varied (or bi polar. lol). Most of my faves are mainstream but different styles. Some of my favorites right now are No Doubt, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Garbage, Kanye West, Christina Aguilera, Evanescence, Sean Paul, Black Eyed Peas, and Madonna.

I like most kinds of music except for most songs with a lot of screaming (besides Linkin Park. lol), country and metal.... in general. I've found at least one song from every genre that i enjoy.

As for the rap and being black subject- well yeah just because you're black doesn't mean you HAVE to like rap. I'm black and I do like rap a lot now, but I wasn't always very into it... When I was in middle school or so, some people used to think it was weird how I was so into all the pop music. Such as Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys because only white girls were "supposed" to like them. (funny later on I found a lot of black girls who were BSB fans) I'm glad no one at college has said anything stupid about my music taste just because I don't only listen to rap, r&b, and reggae.
