A Direct Connect Hub and/or an iRC Channel for SMU
Hey all. Since people tend to treat this forum as a "chat room" sometimes I think a DC hub and/or an iRC channel would be good so that ppl could chat freely without getting in trouble. Dan? Tiff? Mods? ChibiMods? Whatcha think?

I think an IRC channel for SMU would be great. It's pretty easy to learn and free, too! I've already been using IRC and I don't know anything about Direct Connect, so that's why I'm more partial to using IRC over Direct Connect because that would mean something else for me to learn how to use. ^^;; I definetly think we should have a permanent chat room of some sort instead of that AIM chat we have every once and awhile as I really enjoy chatting with you guys. I suppose I could add people to my IM buddies list if I really wanted to chat, but I feel uneasy adding people without asking first and I like to get to know people better first as well....

Heh. In a way DC is pretty similar to iRC... but I hear ya.. DC takes a while to get used to for some people. It took me a few weeks to get used to it. Since the iRC/DC Hub idea was my idea I got dibs on being an op there. :pCardcaptor Takato wrote:I think an IRC channel for SMU would be great. It's pretty easy to learn and free, too! JEN!! You're ok. ^^Ni-ban Neko wrote:I'd prefer IRC to Direct Connect, as there are a lot more clients for IRC - even some web based ones, for people who can't download an IRC client for whatever reason.
I do think it's a pretty good idea, though.

I'm undecided on it, and would have to see what the other staff would think about it. Chances are I probably won't think/do much about it because outside of three things I'm not really going to care much about anything until approx 4PM on May 13th when the semester is done. The three things are doing well enough to not have to take any of these classes over, catching up on bills, and finish paying off A-kon (pre-reg check goes out today, pay my housemate a month's worth of bills next Tuesday, then pay Tiff and Derek for the hotel the following Tuesday).
If this were soimething that would be done, I would prefer DC to IRC. It's not because I use DC more than IRC or know it more than IRC either, I know IRC very well, it's just that more often I hear of IRC servers shutting down, and it would be a pain in the ass to always have to move servers if we were unlucky in choosing a good server. I was an op in an IRC room, and we were unlucky having to move over the summer, then I think again in the fall, but I kinda lost track with school and stuff and I don't know if that room is still around today. I understand that IRC would be a lot easier for people, especially with the web chat capabilities as mentioned, but if that were to work, I would like it to be on a server that has a small chance of shutting down, otherwise a DC hub would be better. Just my two cents.

The server I'm on is Nabiki and it's attacked quite often, so I know what you mean, Dan-sama, but they're getting everything ready to move to a new server. The chat room I visit is moving over to this new server as well and I think the name of it is newirc.nabiki.com. It's not up yet, but it should be sometime soon and I'll be sure to keep you updated about it, if you're interested. Also, what seems to be the most popular server for anime channels this moment is Rizon and I haven't heard of any problems from them yet. I don't mind learning how to use DC if that's what everyone decides on, but I would just prefer IRC because I already know how to work it and I don't have to download anything else, plus I always try not to have so many programs in my taskbar and stuff.

If you know iRC, DC is pretty much the same. You have a place to type to the main chat, you have a user list on the right, and you can private message people really easily. The only difference I can see is that on DC, in order to get into different hubs you've gotta share a certain amount. Some require 1GB (like mine) while others require 5 or more. All in all DC is very iRC like. I think it would be an easy transition/program to learn. I can post some screenshots of DC for you if you'd like.Cardcaptor Takato wrote:The server I'm on is Nabiki and it's attacked quite often, so I know what you mean, Dan-sama, but they're getting everything ready to move to a new server. My favorite part about DC is that you don't have to remember stupid iRC commands like for example to start an XDCC download you've gotta type !New File XDCC! where the "new file" would be the name of the file being requested. On DC all you gotta do is double click on someone's user name and you'll download his/her file list and you can get files (by browsing through their shared folders and double-clicking the file you want) from them like that. Once you start using it you'll understand it better.

I didn't realize server issues happened all that often. I'm frequently in an IRC room on lazynet, and the room rarely, if ever has issues with one of the servers dying. There are multiple servers on the network, not just one, so that probably contributes to its stability. If one server on the network dies, you just reconnect, and you'll be on one that's still up. As far as I know, this channel's been around for years without changing IRC networks.
And hi, Miyamoto! I'm feeling better, thank you

It was difficult to learn how to use fservs at first, but it's easy once you get the hang of it. Really, the only commands you need to learn for fservs are !list and /ctcp.Miyamoto wrote:

Heh. Well DC is much simpler than that. You don't have to type any "/" commands that often. The only "/" commands that exist as far as I know are /refresh (to refresh your share size) and /fav (to add the currently connected hub to your favorites).Cardcaptor Takato wrote: Really, the only commands you need to learn for fservs are !list and /ctcp.

At this time, we're deciding to not do such a thing for various reasons. But if people want to go to a DC hub focused on SM, please head on to the new PGSM Hub at www.whoinc.net (yes, that's the hub addy). It was opened recently by someone over on Genvid, and could really use people inside it besides the two of us (me and the owner) and the bots.
