What do you guys think of the iPod? I don't mean to sound like an Apple fanboy or anything (though I am ^^) but what're your thoughts on this great player/data storage device? It's available for both Windows and Macintosh. It works great with iTunes, which is also available for both operating systems. Anyone here other that me have one? ^^ I have a 10 GB and it's pretty full at the moment (2401/2500 songs, with approx 1.7 GB free). I wanted a larger one but at the time I got it I couldn't afford it...
Remember: you don't need to have an iPod to play with iTunes. Personally I like iTunes' UI better than Winamp and the sort... Yeah I know Winamp is skinable but who cares about that.... Anyways.. Comments?

My iPod rocks. Jen got me the 15 GB (new version) sized one for my birthday, and I love it. Mine's not too full right now; I want to say I have 4, maybe 5 GB on it, possibly more. My music tastes keep shifting, however; I'm currently looking for some good Trance/Hard House stuff to load up onto it for use at the gym.
iTunes: Meh. It's a bit too stiff for me right now; maybe it's because I have a Windows machine, but it just doesn't seem to be very customizable for my tastes. It acts glitchy when you try selecting songs, and it doesn't remember where you were in the playlist when you delete something. There are a few other buggy things with it involving where it looks for my library and the like, but I can't remember the problems specifically. I'll stick with my Winamp for listening to music on my computer for now :)

I'm necromancing this topic to ask for help. I'm considering purchasing an iPod, but I have some questions that I think would be better answered by people who own or use one than by someone trying to sell me one.
I have on my hard drive about 12.5 GB of mp3s, already categorized in directories. To put them on the ipod, will I have to put them in a folder for itunes to see? Will they have to be named according to any rules?
Does itunes require access to the internet if I don't want to use it for purchasing?
If I get a new mp3, can I just add it to the ipod, or do I have to transfer all or nothing?
How good is the ipod's shuffle function? Case in point: I have a directory called Sailor Moon Memorial Music Box, with subdirectories for Sailor Moon classic, Sailor Moon R, etc. Can I set it to just shuffle the R songs, or can I set it to shuffle all songs in all the Music Box subdirectories?
For the ipod video, what kinds of videos can it play? I have a lot of ogms and mkvs with double and triple audio and soft subtitles. Can it handle them? For that matter, is the screen big enough to see subtitles without going blind?
Thanks in advance for helping out!

Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

1. You can choose folder(s) to add to the iTunes "Library", and it will automatically pick out all the music that's in there and have it available for you to store onto your iPod.Sailorasteroid wrote:I have on my hard drive about 12.5 GB of mp3s, already categorized in directories. 2. For the most part, iTunes will use the file information that might be specified for any other music player, like Winamp. In the rare case that no such information is stored (I believe they're called ID3 tags?), iTunes gives you the chance to easily add it yourself.
No, but you might like it if you want to easily get CD track information.Does itunes require access to the internet if I don't want to use it for purchasing?
Add it to the library, then drag it over to the iPod. Or, open the folder that contains the file in Explorer, and drag the icon into the iPod directory in iTunes. If I get a new mp3, can I just add it to the ipod, or do I have to transfer all or nothing?
I'll answer the next question when I get home and can look at the iPod's capabilities; suffice it to say that yes, under certain circumstances, you can shuffle one album at a time or your entire song list.
Dunno about the file types accessible, though I believe you may have to convert certain types into iPod-compatable format. However, the screen is small (smaller than a portable DVD player or even a PSP screen), so you better have magnifying vision to be able to read the subtitles =/For the ipod video, what kinds of videos can it play? Well I've transfered some Sailor StarS episodes to my IPOD, and it looks really good, most of the ones I transfered didn't have subtitles but for the episodes that did, the subtitles are readable, you can read the subtitles just fineSailorasteroid wrote:For the ipod video, what kinds of videos can it play? The videos I had were in AVI. format but I converted it to MPG4 and it worked!
I have a white video ipod with 30 GB (or MB-I forgot) I still have over 27.5 GB left. Personally, I think that Apple is trying too hard to compete with Windows. It doesn't let you use different formats of music or videos and you have to have an extra converter just to get videos on. So far, I still haven't been able to get dvds on but I have Sailor Moon fanmade music videos on there. I don't use the music store because I have bearshare (a program that lets you get music for free legally). The ipod is very fragile which is kinda annoying. Almost everything can damage it and you need to have a case if you want it to last long and the battery life isn't that good. Besides all these negative points though, i love my ipod. I really don't know how much it cost because my parents got it for Christmas. I don't like the program iTunes. It's not the most user friendly program i've ever used but it's the only way to put things into your ipod.
