I have a cell phone, but I only use it in case I need to call my mom for something, like if I was at some office and I needed information from her, etc. Other than that, the phone stays off at all times just to save energy.

I personally find cell phones, or rather, the people that use them extremely aggravating when people feel the need to stop in the middle of the aisle when they hear something shocking or interesting or whatever.

Also, it's especially rude when the cashier is trying to help that person with something, like finding an item, and the person is having a totally seperate, non-item discussion with whomever he or she is talking with.

Since cell-phone discussion seems to be quite energetic, and limited to just grocery-store use, I shall take initiative and start a new topic. *-* Anthy is your savior. Mmmhmm.

Now off the subject of cell-phones, I pretty much changed my mind about Publix. I actually prefer Winn-Dixie over them because 1) Winn-Dixie is cheaper and 2) the people who solely devote themselves to Publix stereotypically have this type of attitude:

"I shop at Publix because I am just better than you are. I mean, look at my coffee. This isn't just regular coffee. It's French or something. You, you probably don't even know what France is. My name is Raven, and I'm an elitist asshole."

That was taken from Penny Arcade btw, except the shopping at Publix part was originally "I use a Macintosh computer".

Why me?

Post by Emma » Fri Apr 16, 2004 8:39 pm

Its been awhile sinced I last posted so first off hello to all of the people. I had to start a new topic due to something that happened to me this evening at work. I hope you can understand, course I work in the wonderful world of retail and nothing is safe in the world of retail. Here goes,

Guest: Hi I have a question about your Power Wheels?
Me: Sure what can I help you with?
Guest: Why do they cost a lot of money?
Me: Well, a number of reasons but the store doesn't have control over that. We go by what Fisher Price market prices are.
Guest: Do you have layaway?
Me: No we don't.
Guest: Well, is there any way that your manager can put me on a payment plan if I make a down payment on the Power Wheel tonight?
Me: No he wouldn't sir. You have to pay for it all at once tonight if you take the Power Wheel.
Guest: Well you didn't even ask him yet so you can't say anything.
Me: Let me call my manager and you can ask him yourself then.
Guest: Your rude!
Me: I know!

Thus the story of my retail life. You know I went to college, got my degree, got married then somehow or another...I still have to deal with the world of retail. Anywho...I'm done venting.

As there is already a thread that's basically about retail (entitled "grocery stores", so it's a bit hard to figure out ^^ ) and the horrors of working it, i'll merge your thread with that one.

And I can share your sentiments. Today i was asked if we accepted food stamp cards.

I work in a candy store. A CANDY STORE. If you're in need of food stamps...shouldn't you be out buying GROCERIES with it?

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Course most people don't use WIC at our store cause unknowing to me...our store is a "rich people" store. I buy stuff all the time so I guess I'm rich?? LoL...

Sounds like Publix. They use them all the time at Winn-Dixie, and yes I have had customers who used an EBT/Food Stamp card to pay for Easter candy and whatnot.

Geez....I don't people now a days. Food stamps for candy...I still can't get over that. That is wrong on so many levels that I can't even count now. Anywho, last night our store had a special Government workers shopping thing and my god. Don't people raise their children to be polite anymore. We caught this kid stealing Yu-gi-oh cards and he said his mom doesn't mind as long as he doesn't get caught. -_- And of course mom says she is mad at her kid for getting caught. I don't know but this world is just....weird. I'm going to Olive Garden to ponder life with breadsticks and salad!!! :D

Okay, first sorry for bumping such an old thread, but I work as a cashier too, and wanted to throw in my two cents.
Tiff wrote:

And most of the time, their phone rings when they get to me and they say "No, I'm at the cashier, I'll call you back" and that's kinda comforting to know that some people respect you :)
Sorry, but I disagree. I think it's highly disrespectful when I'm trying to be polite to my customers, saying "Hello, How are you? Did you find everything all right? *smile*" and in return I hear, "AND THEN JEN'S HUSBAND WALKED OUT ON HER. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? Oh, and Bubba's birthday is tomorrow! We're going to the Motorcross...Yeah...I'm buying candy now.....*throws money on counter* Uh huh....I love Pecan Delights....*grabs bag and leaves*"
It's just incredibly rude.
Amen to that, Tiff. At the store I work at (well, right now, for summer I'm in the produce department, but normally I'm a cashier) we have to ask people a whole list of questions: "Did you find everything on your list?" "Do you have any coupons?" etc.
Now, my mother always taught me not to interupt someone who's on the phone, so I never quite know whether I should ask my list of questions or not. Usually I just blurt them out rapid-fire. *shrug*

That's one of my pet peeves. Most of the people (at least in my experaince) who were using food stamps to pay were buying junk. I just want to grab the soda and cookies and say: "Buy juice and fruit with your food stamp money!" Meh, I don't know why it bothers me, but it does.

Anyway, sorry again about replying to an old thread, but it felt good to get this off my chest.

Speaking of WalMart I hate that store! They dont have low prices and bunch of weirdos might as well go Safeway or Albertsons.

o_O yeah, wtf? I love wal-mart. Ours has everything, and it's open 24 hours. If I need a plumbing snake at 2 am (which has happened to me), I can go to wal-mart and get one. I buy a lot of my clothes at wal-mart, becuase they're cheap, and sometimes they have cute stuff. And I get my groceries there, every time.

And we don't HAVE Safeway or Albertons, thank you.

Precisely. The nearest Albertsons to me is too far away to be able to go there all the time. We have a Winn-Dixie across the street from our Wal-Mart, but I am pretty sure it isn't open 24 hours, and their prices are higher than Wal-Mart's. My mom only shops there if there is a sale on something. I buy many of my clothes there too, mostly because I like what's at Wal-Mart better than a lot of the stuff I find at stores in the mall. I do, however, buy clothes at Hot Topic on occasion (usually when I find something I really like). So yeah, some of us actually do like the store, and some of us really only shop there because we can't shop anywhere else.

I don't have an Albertsons in my area, but we do have a Safeway, and in my experience Safeway's the one that likes to rape its customers with ridiculously high prices. Wal-mart has a better variety of stuff and some reasonable, cheap prices.

Yeah. The prices at Wal-Mart are amazingly low. We went shopping there for Sailor Showtime and I was expecting to spend $50 on the shoes that we need. We got them for $12 each  I was quite surprised because I hadn't shopped at Wal-Mart in years because the store is on the other side of the city and it takes too much effort to spend 2 hours on the bus to get there.

EDIT: And I remember seeing DVD's there for $6

Nothing wrong with the quality of the clothes at Wal-Mart either. That last me a few years+. I still have jeans and the like from AT LEAST 3 years ago, and considering I never pay more than $15-$20 for a pair of jeans and $10-$15 for a tee-shirt, polo, etc, that's not bad at all.

I don't know what your problem with Wal-Mart is, but you don't have to attack all of the people who shop there by calling them weirdos...

Yes. Mizangelamy, STOP. You have every right in the world to not like Wal-mart or not shop there, but you do not have the right to call the people that go there weirdos..at least, not on this forum. That's enough.

My family has been on food stamps before, and I can tell you that, while most don't, some cashiers take their judgments a little too far. I have seen a cashier give my mom a dirty look for buying a pack of hot dogs with food stamps (along with an assload of fruit). Yes. God forbid us from having a nice little family get-together out by the grill for the first time in five years, just because someone wants to make assumptions.

I didn't know that you could buy junk food with food stamps in other states, though. o_O Here in Oklahoma, food stamps do not cover things like chips, cookies, candy, and soda. Fair policy, if you ask me.
