You may or may not want to see this:

as good of an actor Bill Murray is... I just don't think that his voice is good for Garfield's voice. Odie should have been animated too... he dosen't look like he does in the comic.

Thank you Aya Reiko for bringing up that link. that was the one I had looked at when I made my first post.

yoshmaster5: I totally agree that Odie should have been animated too. I mean, it's really strange seeing him as just a regular dog. I can't imagine a real dog drooling as much as Odie can.

And I really can't imagine Garfield with anyone else's voice except Lorenzo Music. I'm sure Bill Murray will do his best. It's just sad that Lorenzo couldn't be alive to do it instead.

Here is a summary of it that I got off of Yahoo's movie summery for Garfield: Garfield is forced to compete with a dog named Odie for the affection and attention of their perpetually single owner, Jon Arbuckle, when Odie is introduced to their home--much to Garfield's disgust. However, when Odie is kidnapped by a mean dog trainer, Garfield feels responsible, so he gets off his favorite spot and gets into action to rescue his fellow pet in crisis.
Actually, that doesn't look like too bad of a plot for a Garfield movie. It looks pretty cute, actually, and I might be tempted to check it out. I was just wondering how they could make a movie out of Garfield when all he did in the comic strips was eat lasanga, push Odie off the table, and make jokes at John, but this seems interesting enough. Not enough to make me want to go see it in the theaters, though. I had a look at the trailer and it just seems strange to see them in a live-action form after seeing them as cartoon characters for all these years. I'll probably just wait for this movie to be released on DVD and then download a DVD rip of it off the Internet rather than wasting money going to the theater or buying the DVD.

Ok, went onto the official Garfield site (www.garfield.com) and I found out that the novelization of the movie is out next month.

However, what I'm super excited about is that the first Garfield dvd is coming out on June 29th. It will include three of his tv specials. Here Comes Garfield, Garfield on the Town, and Garfield Gets a Life. The DVD is called Garfield as Himself. I'm hoping that this is just the first of many more dvds to come. (Please oh please let them put Garfield and Friends on boxset soon.) For more details, see the site. Thought you guys would want to know. :D

Another interesting thing is that Lorenzo Music has been replaced by Bill Murray as the voice of Garfield. Music also replaced Murray as Venkman in The Real Ghostbusters.

(and just in case you're wondering, The Real Ghostbusters was so named because there was a Filmation series called Ghostbusters--based on the 1970s TV series of the same name--that aired during the same season).

::raises eyebrows::

This sounds like a live action spin on "Here Comes Garfield" to me...I'm going to go see it, since I'm sure they can pull off all the classic Garfield gags in the live world.

Lol, actually it's Jim Davis. And yeah, he is alive, only about 50 or something.
I'm a huge fan of Garfield, it makes me crack up every time, and I also agree that the movie seems like a really bad idea. I think they should just stick with the comics.

Actually, Jim Davis is 58 years old right now, pushing 59. And he doesn't even draw the Garfield strips any more (though he still writes them) ^^;

Thought I would update! I saw screencaps for the movie. We're in more trouble as far as keeping in similarity with the show. The Nermal is yellow and brown and Arlene is a grey cat! I'm hoping the actual story will make up for the mismatching of the animals.

In other news, Garfield and Friends is coming out in it's first ever boxset on July 27th. The second boxset is planned for around Christmas time. The rest of the tv specials are suppose to be out long before. www.tvshowsondvd.com is the site with more information. So far they have been very good about reporting when these things happen.

YAAAAY ^____^ I LOVE Garfield and Friends (minus those stupid farm animals). This movie looks... ... ...weird @_@ Not something I'd see in theatres, more like something I'd rent when it comes out. It's too bad though that Lorenzo music can't do his voice. Did he ever appear in anything live action? I think he's only done cartoon voices and I've always wondered what he looked like.

The guy in the picture is Lorenzo Music. That article about him below is almost three years old, but that's him, baby. :)

I first started seeing the posters and trailers for this movie around last December and thought that it looked like a bad idea. The posters with taglines like "It's all about me-ow" said enough, and I didn't find the CG Garfield that convincing.

But I do think Bill Murray is a good choice as the voice of Garfield. He does have a Garfield-like quality to his voice. But should he be doing this after starring in a masterpiece like Lost in Translation (great movie, rent it if you haven't seen it) and being nominated for an Oscar?

Still, I've been wrong before, so I won't completely rule out the possibility it might turn out to be good.

This is just an update. If I'm correct, Garfield the movie is coming to dvd sometime around October....if I'm wrong, let me know.

However, the big news I'm happy about it the first boxset of Garfield and Friends came out as of July 27. I just bought it today and i'm just so excited about it! the episodes are still just as funny as ever! It's also been a lifesaver when I have to babysit my sister. I can't wait for the next boxset later this year!

The next dvd of holiday specials are coming out later this year. It'll have the halloween, thanksgiving and christmas specials. I just wanted to spread the good news.

Like I mentioned in the worst movie thread, I think this movie looks stupid. I loved Garfield when I was a kid and I hate how they decided to ruin it like this. If they're going to make a movie, skip the live action/CGI and animate it, just like they did with the show. You can go wrong there.

Once again people, it's update time! *dodges tomatoes* I never said it was the popular job....

Anyhoo....Garfield has some new releases out. First up: Garfield Holiday Celebrations. Set includes Garfield's Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas specials. Due out on October 26th. You know I will be parked in front of the video store that day just so I can be first in line.

Second: Garfield and friends Vol. 2 is coming out on December 7th. If you loved the first boxset, you won't want to miss this one.

Third: for those of you who liked the movie or were waiting for it to be released on dvd so that you could at least rent it, your wait is almost over. According to Amazon.com, it'll be released October 19th. I'm still debating wether or not to rent...

That's the lastest news folks. *dodges the tomatoes and eggs*

The reason why Garfield the Movie was so horrible that it made me a fan want to kill the writers was that they spent only 10 to 15 minutes in the beginning of the movie to show it is Garfield with the Mondays, nermal, etc. Then everything else was new and out of character of Garfield.

Not true. There's an old Garfield storyline from back in the 80's that a cartoon was made of.

[spoiler] in it, Odie got taken by the pound. Garfield went home, and worried and worried until he got up and went to rescue him. He got thrown into the cage with Odie, and at night, he was looking at Odie adn stroking his back, looking sad. And a very, very sad song was in the background. In the end, the dogcatcher was dragging Odie away to be destroyed, and Garfield saved him.

Can anyone confirm this? I heard that Nermal was a guy in the movie and that John isn't a cartoonist? Is any of this true? I haven't seen the movie yet.
