Why the retitling?

Why the retitling?

Post by Jusenkyo no Pikachu » Tue Mar 23, 2004 11:59 pm

I do not get this at all. I'll hear about a movie with one title, but when it comes down here, it'll be under a different title.

Examples include:

The Order/The Sin Eater
The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc/Joan of Arc
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home/The Voyage Home: Star Trek IV (yes...if that was it, why not just keep the original title?)
The Mighty Ducks/Champions (it kept the original title for TV. D2 was named The Mighty Ducks onscreen. D3 kept the full title)
Solarbabies/Solarwarriors (kept the original name in dialogue)

Also, some foreign films have completely different titles.

Any idea as to why?

Well, I don't really know. But I have foreign examples.

Finding Nemo - Le monde de Nemo (Nemo's world)
(when they put it "Trouver Nemo" in Canada, which
is the accurate translation)

Sweet home Alabama - Fashion Victime (Reese Witherspoon, right ? the pretty successful girl who goes back to her hometown and so on ? )

I don't remember anything else right now, but in French, those two examples show you how stupid the changes can be. There are accurate translations... but sometimes... o.O;;; ...

Actually, Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain became Amélie from Montmartre in the onscreen titles here. Of course, this proves confusing when it's marketed under the title of Amélie.

Also, the TV series Saiyûki hit English shores as Monkey. It should be noted that the original title is a Japanese variant on Hsi Yu Ji, a story by Wu Ch'êng-ên.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone/Sorcerer's Stone: (THe book was renamed first, but granted, it was made into a movie). I mean, was learning that the Philosopher's Stone is some sort of legend REALLY a bad thing? Stupid and unnecessary name change, IMO.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Not only that, but from what I remember, the actors had to do takes involving that stone TWICE for both the U.S. and English versions. Must've been a pain doing that.

Not only that, but most of the rest of Harry Potter has origins in folklore.

Besides, how many 10-year-old British kids would need to know about Flamel? After all, very few kids anywhere really need to learn alchemy these days.

And of all these motives, so far I can only think of the motive for the retitling of one TV show. That would be Prisoner (which was renamed Prisoner: Cell Block H to avoid confusion with the Patrick McGoohan series The Prisoner. The former is an Aussie soap set at Wentworth Detention Centre)
