Life's Gonna Suck When You Grow Up

Post by Tiff » Sat Feb 28, 2004 8:27 pm

x_x

I heavily miss the days when mom and dad took care of everything, and food, electricity, water, clean clothes, and school supplies just "appeared". All problems were fixed, and life was easy.

Today Derek's car broke down, and it's now undrivable and will cost 700-800 bucks to fix. We just plain dno't have that money. what's worse is that we're still paying on it, so now we have to pay for a car that doesn't even run. Yay. Life is GREAT </sarcasm>

So here is a thread to lament upon those younger days. Granted, this isn't for 13 and 14 year olds to go on and on about their problems. This is for those who work for themselves, pay a good amount of bills, and either live on their own OR at least provide for themselves in some way or another. Bitch away, people!

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

I agree. Life does suck now. Sure, I still live with my parents and I get free food, and clean clothes. But I have to clean those clothes.

I sometimes have to buy my own food because they sometimes like to go out and eat on their own

When I used to work at McDonald's, I had to pay the cable bill, buy my own clothes and anime. I wasn't allowed to get a TV in my room either.

I can't wait until I move away! That'll be in...3 years. As much as I love to cry about these things, I'm at least happy i don't have other bills (electricity, water, car, cell phone, etc.)

Okay, all done :)

Granted, but you don't have to pay:

- upwards of $1,200 for rent each month
- around $90 for local and long-distance (that also includes DSL, a luxury, I guess ^^;;
- hundreds of dollars in credit card bills
- $40ish for your computer a month

And that's just MY share. Jen (my live-in fianceé) covers the food, electricity, gas, cable, laundry, and her own bills.

Jonathan, forgive me, but you DON'T have the right to bitch. You have it VERY easy - and for another three YEARS, I might add. You don't yet know the pressure of having to make such HUGE payments every month; you have your food, housing, clothing, heat, water, electricity, etc., all taken care of for you. Heck, you don't even have the looming threat of student loans hovering over you yet.

Having said that: friends, do NOT get into credit card debt. It is SOOOO much more trouble than its worth, believe me. Just buy what you can with whatever money you have from your job at McDonalds; do NOT get 3 or 4 cards and think you'll be ok if you just "pay them later"; it's not worth it at all.

Tiff: I do feel your pain with the car. I'm paying $80 a month for a broken computer, and Apple wants $900 I don't have to fix it. It's not exactly the same, but I do feel your pain. :(

Wow, thanks to you Starscream, I see it from a different perspective. I guess I do have it easy.

I mean I don't nearly as many bills as you guys have, so you're right. I'll shut up about it now. I will get back to you and Jeff about this in the distant future, though :P

LOL, great response. Though 14 years old buying condoms? O_o;;; Damn, seeing that makes me think that I'm behind being 20 and never been in a situation where one be needed (I'm not complaining though, when I find someone who is right I know it and will be happy), but that's a whole new topic altogether.

Going back on topic, wow. I've been out of my parent's since June, sort of struggling right now, and I feel lucky compared to you guys. While I pay my share of all the bills, when it's time to pay rent (I pay per 3 months) I go to my parents for some help as they give us a gift of a certain amout of money for going to college. I try not to dip into that pool though to save for more important things (money I borrowed from them for my first two years coillege bills that loans didn't cover, loans, etc), it's really hard not to when it's time to lay out ~$650 to pay off rent, which I just sent out yesterday. I also just signed my lease for another year, laying down some more money, though since we're staying in the same place with the same landlord, it's much cheaper than it was last year (he carried the security deposit over th this newly signed one, moved the previous last month to the next year's (May 2005 now), so the lease this year was basically this June's rent).

This semester, I'm struggling a lot more than last. Last semester I worked two jobs, both in food places where I could eat. This semester, I had to stop my during the week dining hall job due to a high class load (mainly ART 207, a twice a week 3 hour class), which would only allow me to work friday dinners only if I stayed, which I don't think is worth working a job only once a week. I figured it wouldn't be too bad this semester, since last semester I was pretty well off and able to buy myself things now and then (more namely parts for phobos), so I thought I would only be giving up a lot of shinys. What I didn't realize was how much eating at the dining hall last semester saved me in money. One of my housemates manages all the bills and gives each of us a balance of how much we owe him, over the summer and last semester I was always able to pay him anywhere between when he handed me the paper with the cost or a week after that point. This month, it's been almost 3 weeks now and he'll be getting my check on Tuesday.

On top of that, my weekend job is at a mall that's about a 30 minute drive from Oswego. While around the block from my parent's house (hell, I've waled there on occasion), now I have to rely on the buses. One of my housemates works in the movies there so I can sometimes can get rides from him, but it doesn't work out during the semester for various reasons. So not only to I have to pay money to get to work, the most possible hours for me to work is 15, which is pretty bad when I consider 20 to be a minimum to work and be well off. Sometimes I can get rides home from people if I stay later, but it doesn't happen too often.

And with that, I just noticed how much I've been typing, so I'm going to stop there for now. ^^;;;;

I agree. I have absolutely no reason to bitch, aside from superficial whining that makes conversation more interesting sometimes.

Yes, condoms at 13 and 14. Jeff, you can't forget about the price of brand-name clothing! The allowance money goes so fast!

Johnathan: Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree that you have little reason to bitch about how hard your life is lol

Starscream: LORDY, that's a lot of bills. Poor baby.

Monthly: My rent is about 475 (rent is cheeap down here), and we pay water (20), electricity (usually about 70 in the winter, about 120 in the summer), cable internet (50), car insurance (80), car payment (240), perscription (40), and then there's groceries and any other expenses that come up.

My parents used to help me out, but they moved and bought a house recently, so after paying my tuition they're a bit strapped themselves, and I understand. Derek's dad used to send us money, but he completely cut him off becuase he's a dickhead. But his mother sends us as much as she can every month, so that helps.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Hmm... you'll tell me if I can bitch about my situation, guys. It's in France, but still ^^;;

I kinda still live with my parents, though I have my 200 euros by months thanks to my 10-hours-a-week job as a cashier in a supermarket. (that's almost 250 dollars).

I pay for my food (when I work), my transportation and the damn cell phone bill. Which can be much, if you count.

Now, that could seem all well since I live with my parents, huh ?

Let's add some more fun!

(I use ironism and sarcasm a lot, remember o.O lol)

I have a boyfriend. Ha, big news. He has his apartment and I have to see him often (why be with him if he lives 20 minutes away and I can't see him o.O), but that's 5.20 euros for the return ticket (I think that's how you call it). And since I go there something like three times a week it's a lot.

Now, I got problems from December, cause I had decided I had to participate for some food more than I had done until then, but I didn't plan it would be that much and was kinda broke. Mom helped. Then I was broke cause I went to England and used my cellphone there (from a small 40 euros bill it went to 110 this month cause the surplus was split onto two bills). Mom still helped. Now this month, I've been "in the red" as I say for 450 euros (which is around 625 dollars) cause I still had to pay food and stuff, and Mom helped me with 250 euros, and now that I've had my salary, I still miss 134 euros, and the 110 cellphone bill is coming next week.

Mom can't help me this time, cause my parents are even more broke then I am (stupid Dad >.<;;; ) so I had to ask my boyfriend who inherited some money. He said, well, he has no choice cause he would be a bastard to refuse when he just got so much money, but he was kinda angry at the situation cause he didn't understand. So he's going to lend me a certain amount and after that, I'll give him my credit card.

Credit cards are evil, people. Ooooooooh yeah, really evil o.O;;;

*edit: I'm 20, remember, lol, and I plan to get married next year and with all that growing up, I'll have to worry about taxes, and washing my clothes too, which I hate cause I don't even get how to use the damn machine... yes I'm THAT stupid lol ^^;;

I know I'm not really entitled to bitch, buuut....
Though I'm still living with my parents, I'll be turning 18 in July. Therefore, my parents have made it clear that if I piss them off too much, they won't hesitate to kick me out. Not that I plan to do anything stupid, but ^_^ Even before this topic was posted, I've been a bit nervous about moving out because of having to do everything on my own. I'd probably feel better about it if I rented a place with a friend who I trust, so I don't have to worry about credit cards being stolen, etc.

Just as Starscream said...try not to bother yourself with credit cards for a long while. They generally end up being nothing but trouble. Live paycheck to paycheck,a nd get yourself a checking or savings account.

I'm completely with you on that. I already have a savings account, so that part is all good. I don't like the idea of checking accounts, because you have to keep track of the balance all the time, so that the checks you write won't bounce. I plan on following my parents advice on credit cards. Credit cards are for absolute emergencies only, and not for shopping, etc.

On the other hand, I am slightly excited even for a tiny apartment. It's gonna be the cutest thing you've ever seen.

Only have ONE card for emergencies, and tear all other applications up the moment you get them. Trust me; my first card was JUST for emergencies, and when that was maxed out, the second was emergency, etc....it's a horrible downward spiral.

If you do decided to get one (or two) cards, be sure they have a LOW APR (annual percentage rate); what really kills you on cards in the interest you build up on them, which is proportional to the APR you have. Anywhere in the single digits is nice, and on that note, Capital One usually has some good deals. And always, ALWAYS pay off at least the minimum every month, if not more; otherwise, the card's terms of service may allow the company to increase your APR and minimum payment, thus screwing you over in the long run.

I got scared at first reading this topic, but I just shouldn't look at things like this. I already know from what my parents tell me that adulthood brings financial and "taking care of yourself" duties and difficulties, but there are other good things about it, I'm sure. I'm not saying, don't complain about the bad parts if you need to, I'm saying that it's not completely bad. Otherwise there would be many more adult suicides than there are already.

I hope I didn't sound too immature here, it's just that I'm already kind of scared of becoming an adult, and I hold on to that thread of hope that there are good things about it.

A good rule of thumb when using a credit card is to pay off your debt in full every month. If you can't do this then you shouldn't be using your credit card. I use my credit card for online purchases and big purchases (like books for school) only, and i pay it off in full every month. There have only been a few times I haven't been able to pay it off, and in that case i payed the rest of it off the next month.

If you pay it off in full every month you wont get hit with interest. Anyway, that's what I do. Also, it's bad to pay things with cash because then you don't have a record of where your money went. The best option is to pay with checks or with a debit card, that way you have a record of where your money is going and it is much easier to manage. =)
