Help! Calling all university and college people!

Post by RoastedTwinkies » Thu Feb 19, 2004 6:22 pm

I will be graduating from high school in June! Whoo hoo! Okay, enough of that now. I am totally serious here. I want to go to college this fall and I don't know the first thing about making a college/university application. My dream college is Nait, located in my hometown, Edmonton, Alberata (www.nait.ca). Deadlines are rapidly approaching. If anyone can give me any tips on how to make an application and what to include, that would be awesome and I give my thanks in advance!

Go to the college's website, print off their application, fill it out and send it in.

What Parakiss said..plus, get your financial aide/scholarship applications in as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the less chance you get.

If you're going to be writing any essays and the like for scholarships or for application purposes, i'm going to give you the same advice I gave my friend: ALWAYS, ALWAYS ALWAYS make it soundl ike the school is doing YOU a favor by letting yo uattend. Schmooze it up in your essays. "Having an education at blah blah university would make my living dream of becoming a teaching possible." Shit like that. Trust me, it helps.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Thank you so much guys! The thing is though, my only awesome marks are in (top three marks) art, Japanese and English. There was a project we did in general science 20 that didn't count for science, but for ETS credits. Pretty much, the only reason I got 100% in that is because I'm really good with computers. It's not that hard to make a power point to present information. The rest of my grades for the most part, are pretty shitty. Should I still apply for a scholarship anyhow?

EDIT: Those are core subjects I'm talking about. I did well on most of the electives, but I think it's the core subjects that universities care most about.

YES. You always apply for whatever you can, no matter what. Look up scholarships, and find out which ones are for you. Maybe you'll find one for good English grades, or one that isn't academically-based (and yes, those do exist).

NAIT's site does have online application information (by the way, the website is actually http://www.nait.ab.ca ... but you probably already know this). http://www.nait.ab.ca/registrar/fulltim ... efault.htm has information about registration, and the "Click to Apply" button is near the top-right corner.

As for scholarships ... http://www.nait.ab.ca/scholarships/default.asp is the generic site, apparently. As everyone else in this thread has said, apply for everything under the sun. I have heard that there are some scholarships that simply don't get awarded because no one applies for them. Even if you don't have honours-type marks, you can still be considered for scholarships.

Sometimes you can even be considered based on criteria that might not seem to be that important (e.g. if you're Native, or if you have a parent who works for the government, etc.). There are also others that look at athletics, or community service. Others still look at having a certain average plus demonstrating "financial need". Basically, go through every scholarship and see what they ask for.

Another thing ... I know that at the University of Calgary (as well as the U of A in Edmonton), being accepted to the University (and then enrolling in subsequent years) automatically puts you in contention for some scholarships. I imagine it's similar at NAIT.

[slightly OT] What are you planning on studying at NAIT?

Thanks! I want to study art and video. I love making and editing videos. Eventually, I want to get into U of A in a few years from now as a mature student (so I wouldn't have to worry about my grades in high school) and continue my studies in Japanese. I want to become completely fluent in Japanese one day. I also wouldn't mind a few psyche courses as well. So in the end, I'll probably get a job as a video editor, camera person or interpreter. Maybe a graphic desginer or something.

Before applying or anything like that, I would do a campus tour to see if you really want to go to this college and if it has a really good program for your major. Colleges are different in that sense. Some have better programs for art, music, philosophy, law, and politics, whereas others have better programs for business, computers, engineering, and technology.

Other than that, do pretty much what they said above; apply online, get financial aid, apply for scholarships, etc.
