Sooo, I need some technical help?
Maybe. OK, so, our CD-ROM is crap and won't spin fast enough for...pretty much anything...and we finally got sick of it and went out and bought a new one. It's an ARTEC Internal CD-ROM 56X (model "Super 56X"). My mom and I (neither of which are very L33t) disassembled the tower and tried to pull out the old CD thing, but it wouldn't come out. So instead we put the new one *under* it, and hooked everything that *was* hooked to the old one to the new one. It all fits and everything. Now, our computer can't detect a CD-ROM at all. The box (the only instructions the thing came with) says it is Plug and Play, but it just...isn't there. We've unhooked it and hooked up the old one, and it's recognized, but we just can't get the new one to take. We've been to the website (which requires the downloading/installing of Chinese language stuff...) and its no help. It says the IDE might be "defected." (Nice Engrish there, buddies...). Anyone here have any suggestions beside getting real technical help? Mom's sent an email to the Artec guys, but they haven't answered yet.

If you are using windows, head to the control panel and click on add hardware or (if that isn't visible) the hardware link and then click on the add hardware link. Tell your computer to see if there is any uninstalled hardware on it and see what happens from there. If that fails, try contacting the manufacturer's of your CPU (the tower) and see what they say. If you are unable to do that, take it to Best Buy or Circuit City or any other computer stores. If nothing works at all you might just consider returning that CD-ROM drive and getting a different one like a SONY or something with better technical support.

We've done the hardware detection several times, and it simply says "Windows has not found any new devices" and since the CD-ROM didn't come with any software, we can't install it manually. However, the box's last step is to "install application software." Did I lose some pieces? Because the box ALSO says that it included an audio cable, but we don't have that, either. But we don't need one, cuz we've got the old one.

Lileva could be right. I know that a lot of hardware is being set to slave settings when it is sold, since a lot of people are buying devices for the second drive. You might want to check that out. Usually you just have to move the little black plastic "boxes" (called jumpers) that are on the wires on the back of the drive to the Master position. I *think* that master is the one on the right side, but you probably should check out the manual to see if that specifies, and if all else fails, play with it until it works. Good luck.

Thanks! The techpeople anwered and said pretty much the same thing you all said, only in really bad engrish. slrjoecool, we didn't even check that when we put it in, tho I insisted "did you do that?" to mom. We'll see if that fixes it. Thanks again!

That's what it was. It was set to slave. Thanks for all your help, lileva and slrjoecool, and Koi! Everything's golden now...except we have to do a special little ritual to get the CDs to pop out. But that's no big thing.
