DaddyzLiLGrL54: stop humping the laser
SmarterChild: But humping the laser is so much fun.

lol
When I look in your eyes, I am drawn into them. Because my heart is beating so quickly, I know this is real. This heartache is too much, I've grown tired of it. Your smiling face is too brilliant. If we had met earlier. All I can find is that excuse.

Based on what I'm seeing from your guys' sample dialogs, it seems to be a syntax parser + some extra functionality (i.e. looking for websites in a database, etc.)

Basically, it goes through your statement looking for keywords. It has a set of built-in responses for each keyword. By doing some word juggling (e.g. changing "you" in a question to "I" in the answer), it can respond. It will also have a set of catch-all answers, in case no keywords appear. Sometimes, it will store keywords if more than 1 appear, so that if later on no keywords are used, it has something to fall back on.

e.g. You type "Stop doing something"

The bot would have something stored like "Stop 1", where "1" = all other words. The responses would then look like:

I'm not sure if I can stop 1
But 1 is so much fun
Why should I stop 1?
(etc.)

So, assuming this is the order used + assuming that "stop" is the first keyword it finds, "Stop doing something" would generate "I'm not sure if I can stop doing something", followed by "But doing something is so much fun", followed by "Why should I stop doing something?".

"Tell me more", "Fascinating", and the like are all the catch-all phrases. Basically, if you see these, you've typed in something that made no sense, and the bot's program can't find any keywords.

One way to confirm that this is the case is to keep typing the same sentence over and over again. Eventually, you'll run through all of the options and come back to the first one.

Another thing you can do to mess around with syntax parsers is to re-type (or Copy and Paste) whatever it says to you back to it. After a while, "I", "me", and "you" will tend to get all mixed up.

I don't have AIM, so I can't verify any of this, but this is quite likely the case.

Hey, it was one of the few things that didn't make me fall asleep in my Artificial Intelligence (AI) class.

There's actually a famous story about ELIZA ... long story short, Joseph Weizenbaum created this psychoanalyst program. It followed something called the "Rogerian method" (or something like that), where the psychologist's job was simply to keep the person talking by using open-ended statements. The patient leads the conversations; the psychologist simply tries to get the patient to open up.

Anyway, this program seemed to do the job - it passed one of the tests used for AI, called the Turing Test. Basically, if a person typing at a computer could not tell whether the responses being sent back were generated by a program or typed by a person, then this program passed the test. ELIZA did indeed pass the Turing Test, and was hailed as a breakthrough in AI.

However, the moment you started talking outside its predefined areas of interest (it only knew about family, school, personal stuff, but not sports, or technology, etc.), it became apparent that the program wasn't all it seemed. Eventually, it was discovered that it was a simple syntax parser.

Apparently, people had some rather interesting conversations, and would get so involved that they would want privacy while discussing their problems. Basically, people are very easily misled.

If you want to find out more, try typing in something like "Eliza Weizenbaum" (without the quotation marks) in Google. (Just typing "Eliza" will give you quite a few Eliza Dushku fansites, so adding in the name of the person who created the program will narrow down the results).

Edit: 2 other quick notes:

1) Syntax parsing is a very general term. It refers to anything that analyzes the format (i.e. syntax) of something and breaks it down into units. Web browsers use it (with other stuff) to display HTML, programming languages all have it built in to compilers, etc. With ELIZA, SmarterChild, and all other related variants, we're looking at a simple form of natural language syntax parsing.

2) Natural language syntax parsing has come a long ways. Many companies are working on ways of doing it. Babelfish also uses it, and although the translations can be a little ... off, they're still very good considering the complexities involved in looking at word ordering in different languages, plus trying to translate the text appropriately, plus all the other stuff that's involved.

(In case you couldn't tell, linguistics is a very interesting field of study to me ... had I not majored in Computer Science, I would likely have pursued a Linguistics degree.)

My cousins Ryan, Andrew, and I always love to talk to him and mess with his computer mind. I don't remember the exact conversation, but here was something close to it-

Andrew: I love you!

SmarterChild: I love you too!

Andrew: So that means you're gay!

SmarterChild: I don't know. Am I?

Andrew: I hate you.

SmarterChild: But you just said that you loved me!

Andrew: You're gay.

SmarterChild: That's not very nice.

Andrew: Shut the hell up.

(I don't remember Andrew's screenname)

Another bot thing that's fun to talk to is Oliverbot on bored.com. He's weird. Once I asked him, "What's your name?" ane he said,
"I don't know."

OMG!! I just tried that! I just asked, "What's 15 multiplied by 27?" and he said, "15 x 27 = 405."

SWEET!! Maybe it can help me with my history project!

For anyone who wants to know more about Interactive Agents, including how to create one yourself, you can go to https://www.buddyscript.com/. (ActiveBuddy is the company that made SmarterChild).

https://www.buddyscript.com/docs/BuddyS ... Index.html has a set of documents that explain more about the workings of BuddyScript for creating these Interactive Agents. If you go through the "BuddyScript Guide", it really goes into detail telling you how everything works. It can be a little bit hard to go through, but having done programming before makes it a lot easier to understand.

In any event, it does use a system of input matching with a set of corresponding output(s) (if more than 1, then one is selected at random). If there is more than one word matched, then a scoring system is used to determine which one has the best match.

Also, it lists a bunch of ways of reading information from websites/databases/text files (etc.), which is how it can answer questions about things like website popularity. However, the information will only be as accurate as the data source.

Unfortunately, only 8 of the 10 chapters are available online. As a result, there was no mention of exactly how the program is able to store the text typed (in my example, I used numbers to represent text occuring after a keyword). I imagine this information is probably in there, unless it was hiding somewhere in the first 8 chapters and I missed it.

In any event, I imagine that there will either be a built-in function that automatically saves all text, or there will be a way to save the text to some kind of variable and then print it out.

Excatly why in account creation pages I make sure to mention to read the rules before posting, and make them super easy to access with a link to them on the top of each page of the forums. A mistake is one thing, we all make them, but don't hide behind an excuse of being new here because that won't help you. Doesn't it make sense to know how and how not to act before you do so? I don't care much about the double post because I realize mistakes happen, but don't go trying to make an excuse like that to hide behind, because it just won't work, thank you.

Me: (says what)
Ko: .....What's that?
Me: ......*starts crying*
Carley: STEVE! STEVE GET OVER HERE AND TELL KO WHAT VIAGRA DOES!
Steve: See, it's like this: The bridge goes up and the soldiers rush out....

Tiff: Aww, you killed someone for me. That's so sweet in a f***ed up sort of way!

This robot drives me insane!!!! Along with the 5 other robots. How I hate them so. Though, I keep trying to get one of them to go out with me. My friend managed to so I hope I can. It would be fun to tell all the other kids at school that I am dating a robot. And look what also showed up:I asked him "Do you know of any Sailor Moon sites?" and this is what showed up:
