I just got back from the movie, and I can safely say that it was 10000000x better than the first two.

It has ALOT more emotional scenes, especially the end which some people say is a real tear jerker. The fight scenes are AWESOME, especially the battle of Pelennor fields. This movie is alot closer to the book than the other two, except for Shelob (Giant spider) who was supposed to be in the two towers.

The best part is when
Eowyn takes on the leader of the Nazgul, and he says how no man can kill him, then she takes off her helmet and says "I am no man" and proceeds to own him
I loved Return of the King, I already can't wait until the extended edition DVD set comes out next november.

My favorite part was when:
The orcs are greeting the boats and it looks like only Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimley walk out of the boats, then the dead army comes out and slaughters the orcs. That and when Legolas cooly slides down the trunk of the giant elephant he just took down after killing the entire orc crew and Gimley angerly says "it still only counts as one!"
Good movie, but my butt got numb. I had to go to 2 or 3 movie theatres before I found one that had a showing that wasn't sold out before 6pm on Saturday. And my sister and I had to scour the whole movie theatre to even find 2 seats together.

*sniff* It was so touching near the end. I won't spoil it for anyone, but for those that have seen it will probably have felt the same way.

However, just because of that, I was strong enough to hold back my tears! I still have to keep up a reputation as a stubborn, cold bitch.
The ending is mostly the same as the book. The major change is that the when the hobbits finally get back to the Shire, it is exactly as they left it, unlike in the book where it has been taken over by Saruman and covered with ugly buildings. In the book, the hobbits have to sort this situation out, but that entire section (known as the Scouring of the Shire) is skipped in the movie.
Anyway, it was an incredible film, and easily the best of the three. I can't wait to see the extended version, which I'm sure will be even better.

Not as bad as I thought it was then but still shame on Peter Jackson
While I thought that section was important to the conclusion of the book, I can understand why it was removed in the film. People already thought the movie dragged on for too longer after the ring was destroyed - an extra hour or so of semi-unrelated plot wasn't going to do the movie any favours. I think it was a good decision to cut it, and the end result still made perfect sense.
I just saw it tonight in Orlando, and the theatre wasn't crowded at all. In fact it was quite empty, which was surprising.

I hated The Two Towers, it was nothing but fight scenes, which easily put me to sleep. The Return of the King was really good, although I wasn't sure what to expect considering I've only read The Hobbit. I will say that I was sad when Aragorn didn't kiss Legolas.

I enjoyed The Two Towers for very few reasons.

1) Legolas riding on the shield down the stairs, shooting arrows, jumping off the shield and impaling an orc with it. *drools*
2) Legolas grabbing the horse-esque thing, and swinging himself onto it.
3) The Gollum/Smiegel argument! He was so cute! Me and my friend Maisha kept talking about how we wanted to take him home and hug him! He was just so adorably ugly!

Other than that, I didn't enjoy the movie. I refuse to go see Return of The King in theatres. Only because of the Giant Spider. It scared me on the previews, and seeing it when its about 50 feet bigger would cause me to have a heart attack. I hate spiders, of all kinds. Plus, I'm saving my movie money for Mona Lisa Smile.

 So true...

Anyway, I loved The Two Towers - I tend to switch off during action scenes, but the ones in TT had me gripped all the way through, which is quite an achievement. Apart from that, the story was excellent, the acting was excellent, the characters remained interesting... it was everything I could have wanted out of a 3 hour movie without a beginning or an ending. The extended version is even better (adds more depth to Faramir).

Oh yes...the Ringwraiths. Their screams were just...ugh, they scared me so badly, not to mention the screams were intensified 1000x their normal rate at the theater I was in. I saw a couple of people stick their fingers in their ears to block the sound! >.>

Tch, Gandalf in tennis shoes. I didn't notice that, but I can actually imagine that (if anyone wore those during the major battle, I wouldn't be able to take the scene seriously :P).

I wasn't a member a the time, otherwise I've made a thread. Yes, it is much better than TTT. But that's been said in the other posts.

Ok, O.T.fan, Here's something you may find interesting.
The Scouring of the Shire was left out because it was never filmed. Although Peter Jackson did a homage to it in Fellowship. The Mirror of Galadriel(Sp?).
Winner of 4 Golden Golbe awards.
Original Song- Into the West. (Who doesn't love that song?)
Original Composer-Howard Shore.
Best Director-Peter Jackson.
And Best Picture-Return of the King.

I think Sean Astin should've been a nominee for his role as Sam. Andy Serkis should get some award for his work as Smeagol and Gollum. Yes, that was Andy in make up in the opening scene.

Tiff, Sorry about opening such an old thread.

I saw ROTK a few weeks ago, and I must say, I got bored with it. The movie was good, but by the time it ended, I was almost in tears. I swear, I thought I had died and gone to Hell. Also, I had to use the bathroom, but I didn't want to miss the end. So, after the movie goes dark that one time, I stood up, clapped, and headed toward the exit... And the damn movie came back on! I wanted to cry. I think that LOTR would make a good TV-miniseries, but not a movie. They're just too damn long.

I'm of the opposite opinion - I think it makes a great movie trilogy, and I'm looking forward to the extended version. I was a bit miffed that:
the palantir scene with Pippin was kept while there was little to no explanation of what happened to Saruman before, aside from a brief mention of the Ents keeping an eye on him
. I think that's been fixed in the extended version.

I read all three books after seeing Fellowship of the Ring, and while I do think Peter Jackson was a bit too liberal with his scissors when deciding what to cut and what not to cut (read: a few of the pretty panoramic camera-pan scenes could have been sacrificed in favor of plot elements), I think overall he did a great job.
