Greatest movies you've never seen

Post by J Anderson » Wed Dec 17, 2003 10:58 pm

Looking at my DVD collection, I have a few movies that are at best, cult favorites. Stuff that probably only came my way by means of accidental viewing. So, what are some of these movies?

Man and Boy- Bill Cosby's first film, a drama set in the 1800s, after the cival war. Cosby plays a Union war veteran, given land out west. Bigotry aside, Cosby loses his only horse to a thief in town, and ventures with his son to find the horse, a path which leads to an escaped convict who kidnaps his son.

Cabin Boy- hyped quite a bit before release, but vanished afterwards. Chris Elliot plays a "fancy lad", graduating from his classes. But winding up in the wrong town, and on a fishing boat, he ends up among a number of angry fishermen. An extremely goofy film, with some decent special effects considering the budget.

Super Troopers- again, another hyped movie that just vanished. Comedy troupe Broken Lizard stars as an off-beat group of Vermont highway cops who are just weird. Brian Cox plays their captain, barely the straight man. A murder on the highway leads to a discovery of a drug running, and they'r ein direct competition with the local PD to break the case, or they may face a station shutdown due to budget cuts. Lots of awful jokes, some almost downright inappropriate and blatantly unexpected.

The Big Lebowski- Jeff Bridges plays a man confused for another Lebowski by two thugs wanting money owed to them. Finding the rich Lebowski, wnating a replacement for his damaged rug, ends up in a whirlwind of kidnapping and lots of thugs. Bizarre.

Half Baked- Dave Chappelle's breakthrough movie. Four NYC potheads end up forced to sell marijuana to save one of their own, sent to prison for "cop killing"(feeding a diabetic police horse snacks). Barely meant to be taken seriously, evident when the magic marijuana gives you the ability to fly-literally. Dave Chappelle fans should love this one.

Fear of a Black Hat- a spinal Tap-inspired rap mockumentary, following the rap trio NWH through a year of their career. Takes jabs at the early 90s rap industry, while keeping itself somewhat serious. The osngs are all takeoffs of big rap hits, and we get to look into the private lives of this group even during a forced breakup and their eventual reuniting. Lost a bit of popularity due to Chris Rock's CB4 getting out the door first(despite filming beginning sometime after).

Anyone have any?

Dogma - There has never been a movie that makes me think more about religion and its meaning to people...this movie is just genius, and the amount of symbolism in it is great...and let's not forget the grand humor ^_~

The Devil's Arithmetic - Based off of Jan Yolen's book of a girl who goes back into time to the Holocaust, to experience the suffering herself when she doesn't appreciate it. The movie was quite good, and really portrayed the book well.

Clockwork Orange - I'm not sure if this is really considered an obscure movie, but I had never even HEARD of it myself until recently...it's like one giant drug trip, but the symbolism, music, and the story just make you drop your jaw in awe.

I think J Anderson means good OBSCURE movies, right?

Shanghai Triad: I know very little about this movie's date, actors, production, etc. It's a Chinese movie following the lives of people involved in the Shanghai mafia in the 1920s or 30s, I think. It's just... wow.

There aren't many obscure movies I've seen really (except anime movies, which to most people would be considered obscure). However, I will recommend...

Run Lola Run: A pretty unique German movie about a woman rushing to save her boyfriend from drug dealers he owes money to (with techno music blasting in the background). She only has 20 minutes to do it, but we see it happen three times, with the events happening differently each time.

There's also another fairly obscure German movie I could comment on, a silent movie from the 1920s called Metropolis, but I didn't actually like it that much ^^;

Forgot about Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Despite getting a 2-disc Criterion DVD it still remains an unheard of cult hit. Johnny Depp pulls off the role of Hunter S. Thompson nicely.

3 others-

Gen 13- an animated film based on the comic, it was finished around 1997, hyped by Wizard... but never released. Until DC purchased Wildstorm from Image, but distribution was poor. It was released on VHS in the Phillipines, and on DVD in Canada. I own the VHS, need the DVD.

Where the Buffalo Roam- Bill Murray plays the role of Hunter Thompson almost 20 years before Johnny Depp. While not as into the part as Depp, Murray handles it well. Unfortunately, the DVD release replaced all the music with synth wash, so unless you can get an old VHS edition, you're not watching the real version.

Fatherland- based off Robert Harris' novel set in 1964, 20 years after Hitler won WWII. Rutger Hauer plays an SS police officer who, with an American journalist, uncovers the truth behind the war and the "relocation" of the Jews, facts which may make him sick to have been a part of the Nazi empire. Has yet to see a DVD release, unfortunately.

Forrest Gump - I have never heard of this old film. It's played by a famous actor. I forgot his name. I'm pretty sure it was Tom something... Anyway, they showed this in some of my classes. It's about the trials of life through Forrest Gump who is a little...slow. And it shows you the life of the man from a little kid to an adult.

o_O; Tom Hanks, and that's an extremely well-known/famous movie. We're talking about obscure movies. And it's not THAT old...it's 90's.

1. The Star Wars trilogy (the original ones). I might as well wait until it comes out on DVD. **dons raincoat to protect self from thrown veggies***

Both of these movies are very well known. This topic is about obscure movies, or movies that are generally unheard of. Carrie is one of Stephen King's most popular books, and the movie comes on TV almost every other weekend. And Star Wars is quite possibly the most famous movie series ever.

Well, maybe to you it's well known, but it sure wasn't to me.

*sighs and rubs head*
Guys, really...are we going to have the same problem we did with the "guess the song" thread? Idiotic bickering?
Drukqs and DuoTheShinigami: BOTH of those are extremely well-known. just becuase one or two people don't know it doesn't automatically make it a cult classic or something that many people don't know. Edit your posts. I did it, and you can, too.
