I second Parakiss', Tiff's, and Tempest's view on anime. Anime is just the way Japan makes cartoons. That doesn't make it any different or 'better' than the cartoons in America (Or anywhere else in the world, for that matter.). I've even seen American influences in anime. For instance, the vision in Ami/ Sailor Mercury's goggles are taken from the movie "Robocop", so what's the difference?

It's Starfire and I believe she is an old DC comic book character.... but you're right she does kinda seem like a rip-off, but more of a rip-off of a typical shoujo anime character.Celexa wrote:And Starfighter, that's her name? I felt like it was ripping off Sailor Star Fighter I KNOW IT WASN'T

I dislike Totally Spies. But it's not because of the show itself..it's mainly because it features Clover as the main character of every episode. Whereas Sam and Alex try to break the mold of stereotype teenagers in U.S. animation, Clover reinforces everything bad and stereotypical about girls that we learned in the Clueless movie and tv series. If the show was just about Alex and Sam, it would be 100 times more enjoyable.
Teen Titans is a great series, and their anime homages are hilarious (even the opening song is sometimes in Japanese). The best new Cartoon Network show in a long time.
And I'm a fan of the first two seasons of Jackie Chan Adventures, but not the rest of the series.

Wait. What kind of bad/stereotypical things did we learn about girls from the movie Clueless? I loved the movie. It was absolutely hilarious. But it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. That's what made the show so awful. In the movie, Cher tried to mature, and of course hilarity ensued. But the TV show reversed that process. I'm not trying to disregard anything you've said, I just want to express that about Clueless. It wasn't meant to be taken seriously, and people shouldn't take it as a how-to manual for a teenage girl.Neo Dead Moon wrote: Whereas Sam and Alex try to break the mold of stereotype teenagers in U.S. animation, Clover reinforces everything bad and stereotypical about girls that we learned in the Clueless movie and tv series.

o_O i must go offtopic a moment to agree with PK. Clueless was a COMEDY. The only serious part was quite possibly the ending, and even that had plenty of humor in it.ParaKiss_Groupie wrote:

To get back on topic...Either way, I think most of us agree that anime, as much as we love it, is NOT something that can have a copyright stamp on it and that people cannot model after. I think it's a good thing that people take different art styles to create a bit of their own...I just don't like Totally Spies. It annoys me. The entire show as a whole annoys me. But the fact that anime is influencing the art world in the U.S. is great...I just wish they would put it into more shows that didn't involve valley girl spies.

Maybe I should've just said the Clueless TV series (which was plain awful). I never saw the movie ^^;

Same here. I'm not angry, I just wanted to point out that Clueless was meant to make fun of the "90s Valley Girl" rather than encourage that behavior. Except the TV show, which was just an unsuccessful attempt at humour (IMO, anyways) that I want erased from my memories.Tiff wrote: I'm not angry lol just giving a point of view.

Most movie-to-TV shows are horrid, and Clueless is certainly no exception.ParaKiss_Groupie wrote:

I love Teen Titans, and I think it is because of the anime influence. I do not like Justice League (Or Superfriends, or whatever else you want to call it), Batman, or Superman (composed completely of 90 degree angles, he is!) or any other Superhero shows. If Teen Titans hadn't employed anime tactics, I would never have watched the first episode and gotten hooked. New episodes start January 10th!! eee! I do agree slightly with whoever said the thing about the cues being off...they are sometimes, and I think that adds to the hilarity, cuz then it's almost as if you're watching a "bad dub" and trying to figure out what's goin on.
As for Totally Spies, I think the reason it has such good ratings is because it's on ALL THE TIME!!! Once before Toonami, once right after, and, like, four times during the weekend. Like Scooby-Doo it is. *shakes fist at Scooby* The show itself, I'm indifferent to. My 11-year old sister likes it, and I have to admit that sometimes the show is kinda funny. (Let's face it, Valley Girls are funny. Like, totally) But it's a poor substitute for DiC Sailor Moon reruns.

I used to get annoyed by all the "anime wannabe" shows but nowadays it doesn't bother me anymore and I even like some of them. I haven't seen Teen Titans yet but I might check it out sometime just to see what it's like. I've heard the theme song though which is really catchy and I love to listen to it. Right now my favorite "anime wannabe" series is Avatar. It actually has a real plot, character development, really impressive animation, it doesn't overuse anime sweatdrops and facefaults and stuff like that too much, and I love the sarcastic humor of it. I think it's probably one of the best new American cartoons I've seen in recent years, especially from Nickelodeon. I also actually like Totally Spies. It's not the greatest cartoon ever but I find it an entertaining way to waste half an hour, but then I'm one of the few people who finds valleygirls amusing. I even sort of like Winx Club but I only got to see the first episode of it. I'd like to see more but I just can't be bothered to wake up every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. or whenever it comes on to watch it because I'm lazy like that. Since Totally Spies was originally a French cartoon, was there originally valleygirl slang in the French version or is the valleygirl slang something the dub added in?

I think that the only decent TV shows based on movies are M*A*S*H (not counting either AfterM*A*S*H or Trapper John MD), Stargate and Buffy.Tiff wrote:Most movie-to-TV shows are horrid, and Clueless is certainly no exception.ParaKiss_Groupie wrote:

The big problem with the slang isn't that it's used, it's that it's just thrown in there. Usage of teen slang/pop culture references can be done well (any Whedon show), but Whedon knows when to use it. Saying "We think you're wicked cool" just sounds awful.

I watch Totally Spies from time to time, but not because I like it. In fact, I hate it. The episodes seemed rushed and I can't stand the valley girl speak, and some of the plots are just really stupid. I don't know, for me, Totally Spies is like a train wreck; absolutely horrible, but you just can't take your eyes off of it. Kind of like that show Fifteen. Anyone remember it? Ok that's a little off topic.
I don't mind that cartoons are using anime style. I think it's kind of cool actually. I have yet to see Teen Titans but I hear it's pretty good.

I think its great that more shows are trying out the Anime style, it really can add expression and comedy to a show. Teen Titans is/was a great show, but its not just because of the animation its the fact that story arcs and the characters are great. The style of animation one uses is inconsequential to me. The reason anime is so successful isn't because of how its animated (although it is nice that the Japanese give more details to characters and scenes), its the fact that the shows themselves are better.
As for Totally Spies, I think its a cute show. I thought it was going to be horrible, but it just turned out to be funny. I never took it seriously and thought it was supposed to be a parody of Charlie's Angels and Clueless. The valley girl slang doesn't bother me in this show, because they are valley girls . The way I see it a Shinto shrine maiden using valley girl slang is highly inappropriate, however a rich High School valley girl using valley girl slang is appropriate for the character.

I personally think most cartoons (anime and all) are pretty ridiculous to being with...
Teen Titans doesn't bother me because they use Americac Comic book heroes. If they used original characters and tried to hard to maker them "Japanese" then we'd have a problem. I think Teen Titans is a great idea and frnachise.
I agree with the common opinion on Totally Spies though... That is just crap.

Ridiculous as in exagerated. I love Sailor Moon in a nostalgic sense but I don't see the point in taking such thngs like cartoons to seriously.
It's all my opinion and it's very ricky for me to ay that to a very opinionated (And I mean, opinionated... but in a good way) group like this... but hey, I'm being honest.

I wouldn't say opinionated...the definition of opinionated is when someone stubbornly and unreasonably holds on to their beliefs and refuses to budge. We're not opinionated, we just enjoy discussion, and some of us have strong feelings and such, but that doesn't mean we're against anybody who disagrees or differs.Panda wrote:Ridiculous as in exagerated. I am, however, a little confused as to why you would join a forum where 75% of the talk is serious analysis/discussion, if you're not into that sort of thing.
