Oh. My. God. and Evangelion.

You think YOU take your anime too seriously?

Think again.

Read this article (link).

[10 minutes later]
Now that I've regained my words, I'd like to say that anyone who would take anime, or any sort of media for that matter, this SERIOUSLY is truly disgusting and in need of mental help. I am so shocked by this. This guy had to have been crazy before he watched Eva. There is no justification for this.

Anthy did not wake up today and go, "Well, gee golly, I've got an Ayanami poster on my wall! I better go kill my dad!"

Ugh.

This is why you shouldn't watch too much of anime all at once...

I watch alot of anime, but I don't take it that seriously! It's just entertainment to me. I think this person is just mentally disturbed.
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

Wow, this will certainly help bolster the arguments of soccer moms around the world...

I mean, think about it. With people clamoring for bannings of certain video games and movies on the claim that they are the cause for violent behavior and bad language in our students, something like this is only going to make them shout "See! We told you they were a bad influence!" And yes, I am aware that this is a different argument - he was influenced by the philosophy more so thant he violence - but the argument is still there, that censorship needs to be stepped up in these media.

Incidentally, this brings to mind a number of cases here where defendents have claimed that "The Matrix" convinced them that certain people had to be killed, too. I agree, Anthy; these people HAD to be insane before having watched these things in order to take them so seriously ><

Yes. Let's just hope that censorship groups in North America don't hear about it.

Exactly. When things like this happen...people kill, hurt, or rape other people, and then claim music/tv/movies influenced them to do it, I always say the same thing you just said: that person HAD to be messed up beforehand. If someone has that weak of a mind to let media meant for entertainment influence their actions, then they needed help to begin with...it's sickening that soon, evangelion and anime in general will probably soon be labeled as causing violence, as cases like this man's happen SO rarely.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

The link doesn't seem to be working any more, but I know the article to which you are referring. In case anyone hasn't seen it yet, here it is (it's now in Mainichi's news archives):
Cartoon blamed for man's fatal beating on mom
2003.12.02

YAMAGATA -- A man accused of beating his mother to death with a baseball bat was influenced by a cartoon that made him believe humans were unnecessary beings, prosecutors told the Yamagata District Court on Monday.

In opening statements at the trial of Hiroyuki Tsuchida, 22, prosecutors claimed that watching the science-fiction cartoon "Neon Genesis Evangelion" had made Tsuchida believe a phrase in it that said, "The ultimate conclusion of (human) evolution is ruin."

He also came to believe that humans were unnecessary beings who were destroying the world's environment, and in turn began to want to kill people, prosecutors said.

They said the man fatally smashed his mother in the head with a baseball bat at about 2 p.m. on June 25, thinking that if he killed family members he would not hesitate when murdering others.

A representative of Gainax, the firm involved in writing and producing the cartoon, said it did not think the content of the cartoon was related to the killing. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Dec. 2, 2003)

Wow, yet another reason I'm not gonna have kids.

I agree that he had to be pretty messed up befor hand, kinda sad. However, it's clear that the little psycho didn't finish the anime series 'cause I'm pretty sure that in the end
That human looking "angel" tells Shinji that humans are the speciese that must inherit the earth
or whatever.

Well, not only the person had to be messed up before...

But wait a sec, if the anime were responsible... what about the creators ? Wouldn't they be evil ?

I haven't heard about anything saying Gainax is evil o.O (or any anime studio/creator ...) ... meaning, if the one who got the idea isn't, why would anyone be ?

Ugh.. ::shakes head sadly:: I hate people like this person. It's always "The game made me do it! And it's sequel!! AND IT'S MOVIE!!!" It just doesn't work that way..

Just a thought... you would think that Eva would inspire a person to kill their father out of the two parents... but then again maybe not, but it's still interesting to think about.
::cries:: Its been forver!! And this place has changed... oh how I''ve missed it all ::hugs::

Tiff, I was kidding. And it's not just directed at you, I've also been told by other people to stop talking about anime/my characters so much. It's actually a problem I've had since I was much younger.

I think this person just wanted to kill his mom, and found any excuse he could. I get so sick of hearing "The devil made me do it!" or "The matrix made me do it!" (that is a real excuse. There was a US case a while ago where some kid killed his brother because "he was just a program in the matrix, and it commanded him too.") I mean, come on people! Be original. If you're gonna kill your mother, come up with a good excuse!

Judge: Son, why'd you kill your mother?
Killer: Well, your honor... I asked for sunny-side up eggs, and she made scrambled ones.

Attention all killers: BE ORIGINAL!
"I loved you. I was a pentapod monster, but I love you. I was despicable and brutal and turpid, mais je t'aimais, je t'aimais. And there were times when I knew how you felt, and it was hell to know it. My Lolita girl, brave Dolly Schuller."
