Marilyn Manson Criminal Charges

Post by ParaKiss_Groupie » Tue Dec 02, 2003 4:11 pm

OMG! I found this article today, and I don't see how its possible! here:

Basically, he could be criminally charged because he isn't the same religion as some Swedish group. I find this utter bullcrap. How can they possibly charge him for not being Christian? I mean, I could *possibly* understand it if they were charging him for the violence at his concert, but for being of a different religion? WTF? What does everyone else think?

"Christian groups and lawmakers in Zurich had tried unsuccessfully to have the latest concert banned on grounds that Manson's views were offensive to a majority of the population."

How are the majority of the population's sensibilities at all relevant? The only people who have to go to the concerts are the people who aren't offended by them. It's a choice, people!

Oh no! His religion and beliefs are different than the majority of the population's! NOOOOOOOO!! We can't POSSIBLY have that!

Were these people SURPRISED that he's offensive? The entire purpose of his music and shows is to offend.

My poor Marilyn-chan. He needs a hug and a puppy and lots of balloons! ::sniffle sniff:: FREE MARILYN!!

In all seriousness, though, if he gets put in jail in Switzerland... his safety wouldn't be anyone's top priority. He could get very badly hurt. ;_; I'll just hope that he gets out okay.

That's retarded... but I really have little sympathy for him. Didn't he kill a puppy once?

That's probably just a rumor though.

That's stupid! I don't care who it is, no one should be forced to comply with any religion's bylaws if they don't want to.

While I personally don't think that he should be punished for believing differently than a perticular group [as has been said, they don't have to go see him], one should try and look into the laws of the region one is visiting. ESPECIALLY if it is an entierly different nation.

It sounds like in the article that he was charged with breaching Swiss law protecting religion in that country.

Yeah, I understand what OTF is saying and I agree. Those who go to the concert are the ones who like that kind of stuff. But I also agree with Jed-Kun. It doesn't sound like some over night law they concocted just to annoy the rest of the world. If you're going into another country, it's always good to know what you're walking into. I'd like to believe he honestly didn't know he was crossing the line in Switzerland, but then again, maybe this was the result he was looking for if he usually uses music to stir things up.

Who knows what stars are thinking when they do these things.

Um, does anyone actually KNOW if there are laws against Marilyn performing his show in Switzerland? If the law is against it, that's one thing, but if it's just an angry protesting group, that's another. There have ALWAYS been groups against him, even in America. Is this Swiss situation any different?

It seems to me (and this is just speculation as not enough information is given) that it's just a special-interests group filing a complaint against him, and this is enough to prosecute. If it were ILLEGAL to perform there, which is TOTALLY different, mind you, he wouldn't do it. It's common sense!

And no, I don't think he would kill a puppy. Shut your mouth, Jeff.

If there was a law against it before he came, it's kind of his own damn fault.
HOWEVER, if there wasn't, and as Anthy said, it's just protest groups trying to throw his ass in jail, well, then that's just sad and stupid. Nobody should be prosecuted for their religious and personal beliefs, unless they are using them to be harmful and unlawful to others.

This is highly unlikely. I mean, SOMEONE had to know that it was illegal. He had to get a place to do his show at, and this would logically be run by Swiss people who would be aware of laws banning him to come, so why would anyone in charge of this allow him to play where it's illegal?

This isn't like not being aware that gum isn't legal in Singapore--there are lots of people involved in putting together a concert. There is NO POSSIBLE WAY they could have been unaware of Swiss law if they were setting up a CONCERT there!

Calm yourself, Anthy-babe. I'm trying to see two sides of an issue, as that is always the best way. I'm in agreement with you that they shouldn't do this to someone simply becuase they disagree with him.

Um, I'm probably readin it wrong, but it sounds like people think that if there were laws befor he came they were specifically banning him. I'm more thinking along the lines of not alowing certain aspects of his show which they didn't know about until he got there, or maybe didn't have anybody pressing the issue until he came. I think Modona got in trouble once [probably more than once] for going against a certain rule of the land that she was "unawear of".

I thought America was a free country...

Anyways, I think the whole charge is total B.S. IMO. First people get mad over 'hate crimes', and now they get mad just 'cos some music artist (An artist whom I am fond of, FYI) ripped a bible in public?

And people wonder why I'm an atheist.

On reading this article carefully...I'm going to reiterate what others have come away with; namely, that some religious group, the Church of Truth, is trying to get charges brought against him, a) because they believe his religious views are an attack on Christianity, and b) because he incites/promotes violence in his music (note: I'm not saying he's doing any of this...it's what I got away with from the article).

Now, the laws of Switzerland say that people are to be free from persecution due to their religious beliefs. Seems this CoT feels that his music/religion/message acts to persecute/insult those who are Christians....essentially, another case of a religious extremist group - one that claims stupidity as a sin -_-;; - twisting the law to try and fit their propaganda.

I don't care for Manson's music in general (except for "Beautiful People" and "Sweet Dreams") - I'm not a fan of "screaming rock" is what it boils down to - but something like this...I think it's a misunderstanding, and when Manson explains that he's not trying to attack Christianity, but rather - as he says - that he's trying to promote discussion of religion, the prosecutors will leave him alone. However, groups like CoT will continue to be a presence in things like this, at least in Switzerland.
