Kill Bill
Has anyone seen Kill Bill? I didn't know if this should go here or the anime board because it does have an anime sequence, but I thought it would be safer to post it here because the majority of is live action and American made.
I liked, but if you haven't seen it, be forewarned. It has very little story besides a revenge story, and it's extremely violent and gross in some parts. But if you feel you have a strong enough stomach, it is of interest to fans of anime.

I'm going to see it tonight! I've heard nothing but horrible reviews about it, but I have to see it anyway. There's a name for this, I know it... My english teacher was talking about it... Oh yeah! "Fascination with the Abomination" is what she called it. Where your drawn to something, knowing it will be horrible.

Really, you've heard nothing but horrible reviews? According to the TomatoMeter (the absolute best website for movie reviews) the majority of the reviews were positive, even though most of the do point out the lack of substance.ParaKiss_Groupie wrote:I'm going to see it tonight! Their analysis is pretty dead on:

I'm very, very upset right now. I had my heart set on seeing this movie. I even got permission from my mother to go see it (which is damn-near impossible). I was all set to go. I went to a play with a friend of mine, then after it was over, I gave her my money to buy mine and a friend's ticket while I went and picked that friend up. We got to the theater, and they wouldn't let us in. North Carolina has this dumb law where people under 18 can't see R-rated movies. Even though the posters say 17, we couldn't get in. So, after arguing with the ticket lady for five minutes, we decided to go bowling, where I bowled less than 100 in both games COMBINED! (I am horrible at it!) So, my night sucked. The play wasn't even that good. The people at my school just aren't strong actors and actresses...

There's a 10 minute animated sequence made by the Japanese animation studio Production IG showing Lucy Liu's character's past.Sakuya wrote:What do you mean by the anime sequence?

Movies are usually released on DVD earlier than a year now. Vol. 2 is supposed to come out in February, it'll probably be on DVD by then to promote it.

Thank Jeebus for crappy movie theaters. The movie theater on the Air Force Base in my town gets movies a long time after their release. Well, I finally got to see Kill Bill on Saturday night. And I loved it! I loved everything about this movie, with one exception. Yes, it has little plot. However, I enjoy going to see a movie every now and then that's just an escape. It was pure entertainment. I just loved this movie! The characters were very-well done. They all had depth and emotion. I didn't think that the blood and gore was that disgusting, really. I was expecting to see hearts, or livers, or other body organs lying on the ground when I heard how gory this movie was. But there's just a whole lot of blood, and body parts such as arms, legs, and heads are removed. The only thing in the entire movie that I didn't like was the anime scene. I really didn't like the animation style of it. It was cel-shaded, and I don't like cel-shading because it makes things look cartoony. But everything else was excellent. I recommend this movie to everyone.

Oh my god.
I finally saw this movie last night, on DVD.
And oh my freakin gods.
So. Damn. Awesome.
It WAS pure entertainment...the fight scenes were just amazingly awesome, and the musical score was gorgeous..and music is a big deal to me in movies. The musical score took my breath away.
There was just so much that made me sit on the edge of my seat, staring intently at the television. I cannot wait to see the sequal this weekend.
And might I add...I want to take GoGo Yugari, put her in a glass case, and stick her on my shelf. *___* So damn cute. So damn hot. And so damn dangerous.

As seen on ParaKisu's Dog of Glee Calendar:
Friday, April 16
DAY OF JUBILEE
Nothing will stop me from seeing the sequal movie Friday night. Nothing. Not death, not even Jesus. Kill Bill 2 shall be mine.
Oh, and I bought Kill Bill 1 today. I wanted it yesterday, but my money was off limits until today. TT-TT But no crying! I have Kill Bill! After Friday, I can die happily.

When I went in to see Kill Bill 1, the name Quentin Tarantino meant nothing to me. On the way home, I bought two of his movies on DVD. It was that good. Here's what I liked:
The playing-around-with-time thing. A more avant-garde director would have denied us the time cues (4 years and 6 months earlier, etc.) and made us guess. The fact that we didn't have to but could sit back and enjoy the character development really got me into the picture.
The music. I went into work the next day and heard at least two people whistling the Elle Driver song. Plus the sad song when O-ren's parents get killed, and the disco music for the final sword fight really captured the mood.
The fighting. This movie makes the collected works of Jackie Chan look like My Dinner with Andre by comparison.
Humor. In the midst of all this revenge and killing, we still get the hilarious sushi bar scene, "Charlie Brown," and the really young member of the crazy 88s. I laughed all the harder for them being tension breakers.
The characters. When your archvillain has a common name and no face, and your heroine has a name that you don't let the audience and they're still easily identifiable, you've got something. Plus honorable mentions have to go to Hattori Hanzo, GoGo Yubari, and Buck as great one-shots. (Unless we get to see them again!) One character I didn't care for, because we didn't get to have her fully developed, is Sofie. She seems thus far to be just a plot device to get The Bride information, but maybe there's more. One critique: In 4 years this lady hasn't changed her cell phone ring?!
Anyway, on to part 2. I am treating this like a holy sacrement. I am skipping off work, driving miles out of my way to the best theater I know (huge theaters with big stadium seating), planning an excellent lunch beforehand, finally showing up at about 12:15 for the 1:00 matinee. I think my earliness can be justified--this is officially the longest intermission for a film ever.

OK, I'm back from Volume 2, and, yeah, wow, I think it's going to take some time and a few more watchings to fully take in all the great stuff in this movie. There were about 150 people in the theater for the 1:00 matinee and I'd say 125 of them stayed for the credits. I'll be shocked if this isn't the number one movie this week and if it doesn't gross $100M. If I start going point-by-point, I think I'm going to start blathering, giving away some important points, and forgetting others, so instead here's a general impression:
Volume 1 was very much like a 3-course meal--a little spicey appitizer, some sushi in the middle, and then a messy blood pie. Well, Volume 2 was a dessert. Not that it was bereft of the hardcore action that 1 had, but not nearly as sustained a period of it--don't go looking for The Bride to fight off 89 guys as an improvement on 1. 2 was much more in the Jackie Brown/Pulp Fiction vein, where "battles" are conducted not with swords but with strategy, guile, and Quentin's greatest weapon, dialogue.
And because of that, I'll go ahead and say that, as its own film, it was better than Volume 1. But if it had been left as a single movie at ~222 minutes, I would have said it dragged toward the end and should have been cut down. The fact that they went this route shows real guts on the part of Quentin, not to mention the producers, and it was 100% the right decision.

Not to sound blasphemous or anything, but I feel like I just had sex with Jesus.
The movie was incredible. Opening night, 10:00. When all the freaks and geeks of the night come out. My people! I was expecting a massive turnout. All the "normal" seeming geeks come out at night here. It's like a secret society. So, my friends and I decided to show up at the theater at 9. That way, we could get our tickets, and be prepared for any events that might happen. We were the largest group there. Eight people. There were maybe 20 in the theater. It was empty. We were all very shocked.
Back to the movie. I'm rambling. It was amazing! It didn't have any of the extraordinary fight scenes like Volume 1. There were a few fights, but nothing like the "river of blood" in Volume 1. This one focused a lot more on story development. The music was just as memorable as in Volume 1, but somehow not as good. I won't give away any of the story, but I'll just say that it was a near-religious experience. I laughed, I cried, I screamed.
Word of advice: There is one part that I find utterly ridiculous, and wish that it didn't exist. It was funny, but it threw off the entire movie. I won't say what it is, but I think people who have seen the movie will know what I'm talking about.

I just saw Kill Bill Volume 1 for the first time tonight (on DVD) and I must say, that is the best movie I have seen in years.
But seriously, I really didn't enjoy the anime scene of O-Ren. It just seemed too "sloppy" to me. My brother says its old anime, but I just thought the characters had some weird positions and were unproportioned. Maybe I'm too critical. My brother thought I was insane for not liking it.
The rest of the movie was awsome! I have to see Kill Bill Volume 2, but I can't until 3 weeks (I'll be 17 then, and won't need a guardian yay
), and I have a friend who has been 17 for a while, but she can't drive, unlike me. So we are both stuck at home on Saturday night.
Although some people said V. 2 was not as good as V. 1, I think it will still be fantastic!
