Unfortunately, they have an appeals process in Iraq too--they've picked up some of the bad parts of our culture as well.

I think the governments have lost sight of what a trial is. It's supposed to be a way to determine facts. We know what the facts are here. It's a matter of public record all the people he killed. They should have dragged him straight from his hole to the interrogation chamber, and then to the gallows. Either that or turn him loose in a Shiite village and come back later to pick up the pieces. The man has no defense for his actions and should not have been given the chance to attempt one.

But yeah, I'm afraid I'm with Asteroid...I don't think it's quite time to celebrate yet. It could be a long time before that sentence even gets carried through.

I don't think anyone in Iraq was a huge fan of his. Regardless of whether he's executed or not, there'd be attacks, they are just very very misguided in the middle east =\

My opinion is divided. Yes, he was a horrid murderer and destructive person. However, he will be seen as a martyr for being "Killed by the Americans." Whatever happens, either outcome of the trial wouldn't have been a good decision. Granted, this outcome was fairly... obvious, it still seems to be dangerous. hell, anything would be considered dangerous.

I think he deserves the death penalty, but at the same time, I'm worried. I have a feeling that Saddam's hanging is going to be played out like a spectacle on the news. I may be totally off base, but that's what my gut is telling me. =/

I agree. From the way the trial has been played out on the news already, it's just nothing more than another O.J. type trial.

It's a major problem of the media that nothing ever just happens. There's always runups and recaps. In this case there was the runup to the war and then the invasion and the capture of Bhagdad and the killing of Uday and Qusay and then the capture of Sadaam and his interrogation and pretrial and trial and appeals and then even after the sentence is carried out, there will be retrospects on his life and what it meant. I miss when news was, "this happened, end of story."

I don't understand why it's OK to personally celebrate someone's execution, but if the media were to cover it - and no one is even sure that it's going to BE as much of a "debacle" as the OJ Simpson situation was - the world is a "terrible place" and our media "a joke".

Oh, don't get me wrong. If the media covered it, I would perfectly understand why. That is, after all, their job, and of course we'd want to be informed of what was going on in our nation. I was just poking fun at how sensationalized networks can make things out to be.
