I don't know how many people were following this, but the Rugby World Cup was on in Australia over the past 6 weeks. Sportsnet showed every game, and the final aired here on Saturday from 2-4:30 AM. I taped it, and just watched it.
It came down to England vs. Australia. England was the #1 ranked team in the world, and were favourites to win. But Australia had the home crowd advantage, and the game wound up tied at 14-14 after full time. They went to extra time, where it was tied 17-17 with under 30 seconds when England won it on a drop goal. The final was 20-17, and for the first time ever the Rugby World Cup champion is a team from the northern hemisphere (previous winners: New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia twice).
Over 300 million people worldwide watched the final.
New Zealand beat France 40-13 to take 3rd place.
Canada went 1-3 ... they lost to Wales, New Zealand and Italy, but beat Tonga in the final game to avoid getting the wooden spoon (which apparently means "to finish last in one's pool").
It's only held once every 4 years ... the next World Cup is in France in 2007.
