My favorite girls names are just about anything that ends in "a": Samantha, Serena, Morgana, Sabrina, Clara, Zelda, Glinda, etc. You may notice all those names come from fictional witches. And one name that does not: Shirley, just because it sounds so nice. If I ever have daughters, I'll try to name one Minako or Hotaru or Setsuna though, no matter the heck I'll get from my family.
Aww! You like my name! (My real name is Samantha, that's so weird, most people don't like it! ) *so happy* :)

If I had a little boy, I think I would name him Alexander. I think it's such an elegant name and you can shorten it to Alex which is cool. :)

I also love names from other cultures too, with all their meanings. I think Riona is a nice name for a girl, it's an Irish name meaning 'Queen' It's appropriate as I'm a quarter Irish. :)

I love Japanese names too, especially girls names, these are my three favourite, and what they mean:

Miyuki (beautiful happiness)
Akiko (autumn (fall) child)
Yukiko (snow child)

I think their meanings are pretty. :)

Oh, my god. . . please, please don't name a child after an element, a natural phenomenon, a planet, a deity, or a fantasy noun (being a person, place, or thing, from a fantasy book, series, movie, story, or your very own fanfics)

Personally, I love welsh and celtic names. (which I will be able to use legitimately, since the man I intend to have children with is Irish, and I have Welsh in my family. It is SO irritating to find someone naming their kid "God Who Rules" or something in African, when they're whiter than snow. Or if some _caucasian_ otaku named their child "Mariko" or something.) (wow, long parenthesis!)

Maybe it depends on the kanji used? I saw it in an exam written with the Kanji for Autumn (Aki) and child (Ko) so I thought that was how it was pronounced... Akito is still pretty as well! Thanks for correcting me! :)

I completely agree. I pity the poor kids I have to teach 10 years from now that are named "Starry", "Moondust", or "Trinity LovePeace." It's completely idiotic, IMO.
And I'd feel very strange addressing a lily-white blonde haired, blue-eyed girl as "Myuki".

Ethnic names are ethnic for a reason. They're characteristic to that ethnicity.

Well, it's kind of a crapshoot as to how the children will feel about it. I would much rather have a fantastic name than the common one I have. Of course, I say that now, but if I did, I might just as well be wishing to be John Smith.

That's a bit more understandable, as the name in that case indicates something (falsely) about the child, instead of just the odd leanings of the parents.

But, having said that, middle names should be a free-for-all. If you want to name your child Billy Usagi Illyich Rammstein Galadriel Horowitz-ticolensic Ulysses-David (insert your last name here), I say go with it, since the child can always go by just the first name.

(Bonus points awarded for getting the last two references)

Yes, a lot of my friends have lots of middle names, which I think is quite good because you can use them instead of your first name sometimes, quite a few celebrities do that as well. :)

Tiff and Migiwa, I can see your point, it would be a bit funny a british girl called a oriental name, if her parents weren't Japanese or Chinese. :) I still think the names are very pretty. :) Though, there are some names that are hard to tell there origin these days, since they have been adopted into our culture for so long. I was wondering, the name Naomi, is that Japanese? I've seen it written in Hiragana but I was sure it was a western name. But I'm probably wrong, LOL!

I was skeptical to begin with, since if it were Japanese, it would be pronounced Nah-oh-mi (unless you're with SOS), and it turns out it's from the old Hebrew name No'omi meaning "pleasantness" (cite)

Yep, Naomi is a hebrew name (and a very pretty one, at that!)

If you have questions about the origon or meaning of a name, try this website: http://www.behindthename.com it's a wonderful website, and even has some common Japanese names. If you want specifically Japanese-only, try doing a google search for Jefferey's Japanese - English Dictionary Server. It's an extremely easy and useful resource, with a much larger dictionary of Japanese-English that ones I have bought IRL.

Okay. . . you might think it'd be nice to be named something really unusual. . . but think about it practically. Put yourself in "Moondust" or "Lillyrain" 's shoes. Try going for a job interview, and introducing yourself as "Sandalwood" or "Opium." Let alone "Moondust." And Sparkle? Sparkle?! "Hi, I'm Sparkle, teehee, and I'd like to apply for the position of receptionist." "Hello, thank you for calling Microsoft, this is Sparkle speaking."

Honestly. What's wrong with normal names? If you *really* want it to be special, look in other languages that could possibly be in your heratige, or that you could pull off. (Hint: a boy of african heritage could probably not pull off the name Nikolai, or Radmir (double-hint: these are Russian names) )

And the last thing I'll rant about in this post (promise!) . . .

Why the heck do you need more than one middle name?? Are we going for the guiness book world record, or something? (and if you are doing that with your child, I want you to know that I despise you, you child-using person you. Probably had the baby just to name it Annette Saphira-Lilly Moondust Happy-Love Sunshine I'mnotreallypagan, honest Smith.)

I'll have all of you know that my name is incredibly common: Elizabeth Reneé Adams. But you know what? I really like my name. I mean, you know what the full meaning is? "God's Promise Reborn of the Earth." If you think your name is really boring, why not look up the meaning? It might be more special than you think.

http://www.behindthename.com is a wonderful resource for doing just that.

When I have children of my own, these are the names I will give them:

Girls: Penny Anne (insert last name here, and yes she will be named after that new Hanson song), Amilee (Amy) (have not decided on a middle name yet)

Boys: Jordan Taylor (insert last name here, and yes he will be named after Jordan Taylor Hanson from Hanson), Nicholas (haven't decided on a middle name yet)

On another note, my parents once knew another set of parents who had the last name of Daw. So they went and named their kid Zippity Dew. I couldn't believe some parents would give their child such a stupid name. I'm telling the truth. I am seriously not making this up.

This is definately a hard thing to think about for me. I mean, I don't want my kids needing therapy later in life because of it. (like naming a boy Sue or Marion)

Boys: Justin, Kevin, Scott, David, Daniel, Paul, Gideon or Jeffrey.

Girls: Sara, Ashlene, Alyssa, Kelly, Laura, Amy, Courtney or Kristine.

I did think about naming a girl Tiffany once. I may still do it. It's a cute name, in my opinion.

Well, a lot of my ideas about naming come from what I like for imaginary characters, and if I really did have a kid, I'd probably name a girl Diana (after the Roman Moon goddess) and a boy Basil (that's my favorite male name right now). Then again, I might find some other girl's name, since the name Diana might make me miss the dog too much when she dies. And I don't want to have kids, so far as I'm concerned anyway.

I wholeheartedly agree. I mean, think of this kid's future. Think of him being in SCHOOL. Do you really think we teachers enjoy trying to keep a straight face while going, "Sparkle! Please, sit down!...That's enough, Stardust!". We feel like idiots, and when the kids get into middle and high school, they'll feel like idiots, too. I know so many people who either go by a different name, or their middle name simply because their parents named them something completely stupid or difficult.

It seems people just can't stick with simple names anymore. I like the simple names like Emma, Emily, Elizabeth, Sarah, etc..much more than I like names like "Laquinta", "McKayla", and "Raven Moonbeam McLillian Kay."

And is it just me, or do people love to slap "Mc" and "La" on anything? Lakeysha. Lasarah. McKenna. McKaylee. God, how I hate those names.

Just as annoying is the i-for-y substitution that's popular these days, as in Staci, Nikki, Mari, Luci, etc. No offense intended to anyone who has one of those names.

That's why the Ami to Amy thing bugged me. What the hell was the point in changing it?! People want SO hard for their kids to be "unique", that they'll change "Mary" to "Mari"...People, it's not your kids' names that make them unique. It's their PERSONALITY.

:cough: umm, Personally, when I have a daughter, I would name her Serenity (no, not as a Sailormoon reference, I just like the way it sounds and its meaning). Actually, I really can't think of any other girls names that I like 0__o.

If I had a son, hmmm, I don't know what I'd name him. I don't really want a son, but maybe I'd name him something like Daniel, or Martin, or Sebastian, or Elton.

Yes, I to am in agreement with people not taking names related to their culture. But their's something else I noticed. Many of the exchange students at my school change their names to something more "American" (or "Canadian" I guess 0__o) when they're original names sounded more pretty. It's too bad, I mean their names aren't that hard to pronounce.

*blink* Does your name start with a "La" or a "Mc"? If so, sorry, but those names just really annoy me ^^;;; Probably becuase there's so many damn "McKennas" and "McKenzies" here.

And yeah, I've noticed that, too. I knew a girl who was Korean, and she called herself Jane. I liked her original name better. (I've since forgotten it.)
