Dunnys
Yesterday, while reading the paper, I came across an article that talked about a new trend toy called "Dunny", which to me sounds like the new Beanie Baby, but worse.
Dunnys are 3 inch rabbit figures that each have the same shape, but a different design on them; some are actually pretty neat. The object, of course, is to collect them all, and this is where they get you; it's one of those things where you can't see what you're getting, and of course there are ultra rare Dunnys to collect.
Does anyone collect these? Also, what's your opinion on trends like this? I think it's a neat idea to show art, but for a six dollar mystery box, it isn't worth it, and only makes me wonder what the next "big thing" will be.

Actually, they came out in 2004 and are still going strong at limited retailers, selling out every time. I just checked eBay, and it's insane what people are paying for these things! They aren't being viewed as some wierd toy, but taken very seriously.
I'm just glad I don't live anywhere near where they're sold, or might be tempted to buy just one, but then get another since I'd be certain not to get a duplicate, and then....

They look pretty lame to me. I prefer beanie babies.

They definitely look like something that would flood Hot Topic.
Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

O_O I can say that this isn't quite what I expected when I clicked on the topic.
Maybe you Americans should pay a bit more attention to Crocodile Dundee...

THAT'S something I would expect to flood Hot Topic, for sure... Because Hot Topic has to be so "anti establishment" with their punk/goth/retro Nintendo gear, and yet still be hip with everything... They are cute though. <3

Just doing my usual job of being mean and evil. x] I love retro Nintendo as a matter of fact. I'm probably the only person I know who listens to Super Nintendo video game music.... ;-;Sylphiel wrote:Hey, don't dis the retro Nintendo gear. >:[Neon Heart wrote:Because Hot Topic has to be so "anti establishment" with their punk/goth/retro Nintendo gear, and yet still be hip with everything...

Heh, you are not alone in that, I have various CDs and MP3s of that generation of gaming that I enjoy listening to. Hell, I enjoy going a step back to the NES and GB music, either via OSTs (yes, there actually ARE OSTs for games in that era) or often MIDIs. MIDIs = win.Neon Heart wrote:I'm probably the only person I know who listens to Super Nintendo video game music.... ;-;
Retro Nintendo gear also = win. Though the real hardcore gamers were wearing gaming stuff like that before it bacame "cool". I am a trendsetter. XD
Anyways, back to the actual topic, it looks like Dunnys will be this generation's beanie babies. The formula is already in place, and I can see the target audience eating it up just like last generation did the same with beanie babies. I'm suprised they're not flooding Hot Topic already. I wouldn't call them lame just because they all have the same shape, if anything he set shape makes them stand out as their own work, and not just a generic so-and-so from whoever. This has real potential which has already been tapped into. While the whole mystery thing has proven effective in other markets, I can't recall that ever being done with collectible figures such as these before. I'm interested in seeing how well that will work for this market.

Man... I just knew that I'd be tempted. There are four of them that I really like, and I just purchased one off of eBay for pretty cheap considering I know what I'm getting. Plus, this way, I have a mascot!
Presenting my Dunny, Queen Andrea
She reminds me so much of Ulala from Space Channel 5 that I just couldn't pass her up for that price. Another one I like is going for $75, which is stupid. Just watch, a few years from now the most someone will be able to get is $5.
