Having problems with my computer mouse

Post by shansen » Sat Nov 15, 2003 1:38 am

I've been having this very strange problem with my computer. It seems as though, sometimes, my mouse takes a single-click and thinks it's a double-click, acting accordingly. (By the way, this is running on Windows XP).

At first, I thought it was my mouse. I looked it up (I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical), and found out that this behaviour is not uncommon. I tried updating the drivers, uninstalling/reinstalling the software, and even changing the port (PS2 to USB), with no change.

The thing is, it only seems to happen in very select spots. Whenever I have a scroll bar in IE, Outlook, or Outlook Express and try to click below/above the scroll bar to move one page down/up, it jumps two pages. However, in Word and Excel, it doesn't act up at all, moving one page in either direction.

To make matters even more complicated, I've tried two other mice (another optical mouse, as well as a little Compaq two-button trackball mouse) on the same computer, and all of them act the exact same. On a different computer (running Windows 98 ), however, all of the mice (including my IntelliMouse) act normally, scrolling just one page at a time.

I have gone through every option I could find under the Mouse in Control Panel (along with everything else in Control Panel), Accessibility Options, Internet Explorer options, and everything else I thought might somehow be relevant, but it didn't work.

Also, I should mention that I've owned this mouse for close to 2 years now, and it has done this sporadically (about three or four times for 2- to 3-day spans each time), but for the most part seems just fine.

I realize that this seems to be a fairly nitpicky thing, but it's very irritating. I know I can just use the scroll wheel (or the keyboard Page Up/Page Down keys, etc.), but it's just really odd that it's doing this.

If anyone has any ideas (aside from "Buy a new mouse"), please let me know. It's been bugging me for a while now, but it's really been driving me nuts over the last few days.
