Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Post by Rin » Sat Jun 24, 2006 3:53 pm

Did this show give anyone else nightmares when they were younger?
I watched a few episodes on Youtube and they don't really scare me any more, but they were still fun to watch.

Scariest episodes:

The Tale of the Doll Maker
- This one seriously traumatized me when I was little.
The Tale of the Dead Man's float- Probably the scariest one for me. It actually still scares me. It was really creepy and that ghost is horrifying.
The Tale of the Dark Music- Darkest ending of all the episodes, especially for a kids show.
The Tale of laughing in the Dark- Only because I'm afraid of Clowns
The Tale of the Lonely Ghost- It made me never want to go inside of an abandoned house
The Tale of the Pinball Wizard-Cruelest ending. The episode itself wasn't scary at all, but the end when he beat the game and you think everything is ok, you see the pinball roll up and the kid realizes he can never get out.

There was a lot more great episodes to this show.

Sadly, this was so long ago I can't even remember any of the episodes. However, I do remember having the crap scared out of of me when watching this show, but I still liked it. Kinda sounds like me now with other scary stuff.

The only episode I remember is when the kid took the clown's nose from the fun house, and the clown followed him home. That one scared me.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

youtube.com has a bunch of episodes up. I watched the first episode, and maybe it was just this one episode, but I don't remember the actors being so...shitty ^_^;

Maybe I'll have to watch some more episodes. A good one that I can remember was that two part episode with the pirate and the kid's younger brother getting kidnapped.

In any case, huzzah for Canadian Television.

Hah- I thought so too watching the older ones. Seemed like they got better though. ^^

Dead Man's Float- which I rewatched- is still pretty CREEPY to a fourteen year old me... but for a six year old me?! Wow.

I still am kind of scared of going underwater... in my bath tub only. The pool, I feel safe in, oddly enough. xDD
At least I know the lifeguards aren't just making out the whole time. :P

I don't actually remember many of the specific episodes I used to watch but I definetely remember being frightened by them to the point where I used to turn it to another channel the moment Are You Afraid of the Dark? started. Even the opening sequence was scary. I'm sure that I can watch the majority of the episodes now without flipping the channel but I'm surprised I actually had the guts to watch even one episode back then, lol!

Was Dead Man's Float the one with the ghost in the pool?

That show was wicked scary but I loved it. There were always two kids - those who watched Goosebumps and the ones who watched Are You Afraid of the Dark.

Oh, wow, you're bringing back some good memories; I ADORED this show! Yeah, Dead Man's Float was the one that kept me awake at night for a few weeks because drowning is one of the top ways on my list that I don't want to die, and I can't swim, either.

How come no one's mention Sardoe? (That's Sardoe! No Mister, accent on the doe?) He was my favorite character.

I don't remember it that well, but my favorite episode was the one about the girl who was obsessed with fairy tales and got trapped in one. The phone police episode was okay, and wasn't Gilbert Godfrey in one where he was trying to send a kid that wasn't dead to the afterlife?

Gaaah, now I want this show on DVD!

EDIT: I just checked, and it was released only in Canada in April. *Cries*

Wow, I remember this show. I remember how at the end at the theme song someone would either lite a candle or a match. I don't know why, but that scared the crap out of me and I was alwayy obsessed with knowing whose hand that was. o_0 I might watch an episode or two on YouTube when I have some time.

I'm rewatching some now =D

My favorites (that I can remember) were the Pinball one, and the Fairy Tale one. But I know I had more, hopefully I can find them up. I always liked the ones with the twist/unhappy endings more... hence why I'm such a huge Twilight Zone fan. ^^

EDIT: Ah, I remember another one I liked now... The Night Shift, with the hospital. =)

Ah! I love Are You Afraid of the Dark?. I was so happy when I saw someone uploaded episodes on Youtube. XD

I really can't remeber which ones I really liked, or was afraid of. I do remeber watching it EVERYDAY at 5:30 when I was little.

It's taken hours because I have dial up and this computer is a piece of garbage, but I almost have all of "The Tale of the Lonely Ghost" downloaded.

I've seen this one before, but I'd forgotten what a bitch that one chick was and how the little girl ended up in that room. The sad thing is, kids really are that cruel, and I'm sure similar things have happened, but probably not ending with death.

I'm still pissed about the seven year old kid that put his cat in the fridge, and it almost died of starvation while they were gone a few days. At seven, you should know better, and I hope he got a bad spanking.

I remember this show well. As cheesey as it was it still had a few realy good episodes. I remember "Tale of the Super Specs" was the first one to realy scare me. I agree that "Tale of the Pinball Wizard" had a realy cruel ending, but I thought it was one of their best episodes. "The Tale of Dark Music" was an episode I loved, even though the ending was kinda distubing the good kid got a new bike and the bad kid...well they left that to your imagination (it is a kid show after all).
And "The Tale of Laughing in the Dark" is not one I'm ever going to forget *shudder.*

Ah, memories of a better time, but is it that the shows on Nickeloden have gotten worse, or is it my tastes have changed because I'm older???

I think the shows have gotten worse. Recently, I watched an episode of Salute Your Shorts on Youtube and I really enjoyed it. I also watched some Legends of the Hidden Temple and it made me want to be on the show again. About a month ago I bought the first two seasons of the Adventures of Pete and Pete and I was laughing through most of the episodes.

When Nickelodeon started trying to be cool is when it really started to get bad. They suddenly started airing teenybopper shows and got rid of their variety. Many of their shows now a days seemed geared to kids 10 and under when they used to have shows that teenagers could enjoy. (Salute Your Shorts, Hey Dude, Adventures of Pete and Pete, All That)

Well, after much debating, I just went and bought a copy of the first season off eBay. It has a lot of great episodes on it, and I can't wait to see "Laughing in the Dark" again, it actually made me start to like clowns, for some reason.

"Pick the right door and you'll go free, pick the wrong door, and there he'll be."

Does anyone else think it's sad that I remember that?

Eeee! And I think there's a Sardo episode on here as well! I actually hope there weren't too many seasons, otherwise this is going to get expensive.

I watched this show when I was little. I don't remember any episodes, only little snippets. The one that stands out most in my mind is this one when there were lot of people without faces? I think they all had numbers too. Does anyone know which one that was?

My sister and I used to watch this show every, Saturday night? I'm not sure which night it airred, but we would watch it with the lights off. It was fun. I'm getting nostalgic, and that doesn't happen to me very often, lol.

I, too, love the Fairy Tale one. :) I remember she kept calling everyone immature and they would just throw it back in her face with her love of fairy tales. You're never too old for fairy tales, people.

Does anybody remember The Tale of the 13th Floor? I think it was these 2 kids who went up to the abandoned floor to play hockey, and there was some weird guy who made it all freaky and trippy...I don't remember much of it, but it gave me nightmares.

The last one I remember watching was the movie, I think it was, or an hour long special called The Silver Sight. Anyone remember that?
The Facts of the Animal Kingdom:
"Zebras can bite."
"Snakes say sss."
"Lions chase people."
And of course…”Tigers bite you.”
--From Tiffu’s Pre-K students. =D
And one from me...Leopards are gorgeous.

I do remember that movie and surprisingly, I thought was pretty good. Of course, there was a major plus that Gary was in it. Too bad none of the other original cast members made an appearence like Kiki and Betty Ann. The scene with the well really scared me. I never really liked the newer episodes with a whole new set of campfire kids as much as the original, but Silver Sight was good movie. And the begining with the kid standing at the campfire scared the hell out of me!
