Teachers and their reputation

Post by #1SailorMoonFan » Wed Jun 07, 2006 1:51 pm

I'm always hearing how teachers have no lives. How they are evil and hate us all. This annoys me. I have had some REALLY awesome teachers so far and it gets to me when people diss them. I personally want to be an English teacher in Japan when I grow up. Only it is different there b/c teachers are hugely respected there. Care to voice your opinion on this?

My mom's a teacher. I know about a LOT of teachers that are good people, my mom among them. It's the bias, and teachers are... evil... X_x; I doubt it entirely that all teachers are evil...

Teacher here.

No, we are not evil. We do not sit around and plot ways to make our students' lives miserable. We have lives of our own.

We have boyfriends, we go shopping, we go out to eat, we drink margaritas. We enjoy hobbies, we like tv shows, we like music. Some of us rock out at Aerosmith concerts, and enjoy singing Queen at the top of our lungs in our cars. Some of us go to night clubs over the weekend, and some of us take vacations to Mexico over the summer and party down.

When I go home, I leave my school problems at school, just like when I go to school, I leave my home problems at home. We seperate our personal lives from our teaching lives, and know how to act professional when it's necessary. I curse like a sailor when i'm at home or with friends. But when I'm with fellow teachers or at school, I'm entirely 100% professional in the way I carry myself and in the way I speak.

Don't mistake teachers with evil drones who have no lives. 9 times out of 10 you'll be dead wrong.

good teachers do exist but they are up against an extremely flawed education system.

I have a lot of respect for any teacher who sticks with the job and doesnt become a mindless child hater.

Im hopeing to get involved with special education someday.

Very well said. There are so many problems with the education system, and we have to adjust to them all the time. Some teachers do get burned out, and it's sad that they do.

oh GOD, good lord, that's so true... ;_;

my mom is having SO MUCH TROUBLE with finding a job in MI... the so-called massive great job market is NOT for teachers, it's for select places only. I've seen so many good teachers through my years, to think all of them dispise all their students, and want to abuse their pupils, is plain foolish. It's really foolish...

I don't know if this has been said in a different wording, but I would like to add something. Most of the time, when a kid think his or her teacher "needs a life" and should leave them alone, is normally when that kid is usually disruptive in class all the time, just to be an ass or to harrass another student. The kids who behave normally like their teachers at LEAST a little bit.

True, there ARE some teachers who act all "evil" and whatnot, but that normally doesn't happen all the time. It's the kids attitude that makes the teacher. In other words:

Behaving student: Nice teacher.
Stupid student: Teacher of Hell.

I couldn't agree with you more. The kids that were teacher haters were complete dicks with attitude problems. Good teachers even make terrible subjects at least enjoyable classes. Psycology and Sociology sucked big time but because I had a good teacher, the classes were enjoyable even though the subject still sucked.

I agree with many points in this thread (I try to look at my teachers as people... since most of them are the same ages as my two older sisters, between 22 and 27, it makes it easier on me. Plus, my Grandmother was a teacher...)

I have run into, a few, bad teacher so to speak. One incident occured a few months ago with my Science subsitute (the normal teacher was out on maternity leave). For one, he would only respond to the questions of the bad-kids (for lack of a better word...). Anytime an actual question was being asked and he was answering it, a bad-kid would raise their hand and he would forget about it to go and yell at them. It was very frustrating and I almost failed a standardized test this year because of it (I think this is why at least... I made 100's on everything but I was borderline passing for the first time in my whole life... riiiight...)

That's just a fraction of what he would do. (He would also sit right behind me and stare at me alot but... )

Anyway, while there are very good teachers out there I think people should ake into consideration that there are also some morons out there to. (Sub or not, you don't do that!)

...Ew! My 8th grade history teacher did that with me, a lot. Just sat at his desk, and would stare and me and my friend.

Coincidentally, that's the same guy who was arrested for child pr0n charges a few months back... Icky. >_<

He would also breathe really loud...

Sorry about that. Over-share!

Aside from that particular teacher I had some very good teachers. One in particular was very popular with the students, the parents, and the staff. Nobody had less than an 85 in here class and, considering it was an advanced course teacher, 3/4 of the school took her class. If you ever had a missing assignment for a substantial amount of time she would make you (mean MAKE YOU, she'd call you're parent sand everything.) stay after to finsh the work and if you had so much or you just didn't finish she would take you to her house to finsih and you wouldn't be allowed to leave until you did. (This teacher was hardcore!)

Nevertheless, I, along with the majority of the student body, LOVED this woman. I think if teacher have the right motivation for themselves it really rubs off onto the students. (I hate it so much when a teacher says "I'm not going to mkae you do the work"... do you even want me to pass. And yes, I do my work...)

I can mostly agree with you on that. I did have one teacher who was VERY awesome, a VERY good person, a good teacher, it was just that her teaching methods were outdated. But, I did have one teacher who would lash out on me for no apparent reason! And this is one example of a bad teacher I had:
Me: "Mrs.[Teacher's Name], Billy is pinching me!!!"
Teacher: "Billy, why are you pinching [my name]?"
Billy: "Because he is annoying!"
Me: "What! I'm not annoying!"
Teacher: "Shut up, [my name], you ARE annoying."
I can't believe a teacher told me to shut up and called me annoying! But I've only had two bad teachers in my life!

Ugh, the students who are the cause of the problem but yet act like a victim of the teacher's wrath. >.< Don't expect my sympathy if you're being a little jackass who's throwing paper balls instead of studying and then you get punished for it. How stupid. You don't do what you're supposed to do and you'll get punished. It's freakin common sense, dude.
But yes, the majority of teachers are actually awesome. I still gave apples to my teachers. Hehe ^_^ Apples are cool. Tiff, do you ever get any apples?

I've gotten one apple so far, and that was while I was student teaching. XD I have gotten plenty of chocolate, stuffed animals, candles, knickknacks, and bath products, though.

I don't think alot of kids act like retards because they think it's right. Kind of like what I said in the "School Unifroms" thread. Most are acting out because they can't at home. That's what did anyway.

Also, I noticed a good number of these kids are spoiled white kids... Mainly emo's, but some other derive from the punk groups. Alot of the black kids are just poor I guess.

(I'm not being racist, just speaking my views as I see them...)

*Shrugs* It depends on the area in which you teach, and the socio-economical background of the kids. I teach in what most would call a "ghetto" section of town, and my kids are all either hispanic or black. The black children seem to behave the worst. The hispanic children behave beautifully with me, but act out with their parents. The black children act out all the time, and their parents are just as bad. It just depends.

I hate to bring race into the issue but that's really what alot of it is.

I see more black kids in ISS everyday than any other. Crazy thing is, I know a white drug-dealer at my school (she did get caught but not for awhile...).

I think kids from all the groups act out a bit. The white groups usually just act annoying, it's mainly the girls though and a few guys. The black kids have to prove something I guess. I've noticed a good number of wealthy black kids that do well and a god number of poor ones to. I guess it depends on how they and their family view education and self-appearance.

I see a few hispanics causing trouble but not really. While I don't think that many of them excell at school I don't see alot of them necassarily acting out either. Most of them are very nice people.

Now, the asians... Lord. I know one asian girl in my regualr class (math of all things...) and she's really cool. I thought she was mexican until I got a good look at her (Her name is Maria so...). But all the asians in my advanced courses either say nothing or say to much. They can be pretty bad sometimes. I've seen them do crazier shit than the black/hispanic/white kids but they don't get in much trouble for it because I think they're a bit underestimated at times.

Again, it depends with the hispanic students. Down here, most of our hispanic families really value education and have a good, strong work ethic, and so they encourage and support their children and their childrens' schools/teachers. All of the hispanic kids in my school are incredibly smart and most of the top students.

Unless the "teacher" (and I use the term loosely in this case) was an asshole to begin with, in which case you can't really blame the students for acting out or being disrespectful to varing, debatable degrees. Of course asshole teachers are a minority that spoil it for the good teachers.
