It's easy to let a yaoi or any fanfic for that matter to get out of character, or to lean too heavily on overused stereotypes/ideas. That drives me crazy. It's poor writing, and I usually stop reading at that point. Coincidentally, I don't read as much fanfiction as I'd like to... it's hard to find something epic and mind-blowingly great. I wouldn't mind seeing more of that fic you wrote, Panda... your descriptions are nice!
Yaoi fanfiction grumbles

And to think I've been pronouncing yaoi incorrectly all this time.
(yah-oy is how I always thought it was said)

one of the biggest problems with my friend is she knows Im an aspiring professional writer so its not unsusual for her to ask me to read her stuff and tell me what I think. Since I know she cant handle what I really think I usually say "Ill read it later" or "remind me next time you see me."
I dont think I can keep that up though.

If she has a record of getting upset over your critiques then explain to her that you're no longer going to read her works because of that reason. It gets to the point where you have to say, "If you don't want my honest opinion then don't ask for it".Sailormars Obsessed fan wrote:one of the biggest problems with my friend is she knows Im an aspiring professional writer so its not unsusual for her to ask me to read her stuff and tell me what I think. And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

well I finally made a professional and very polite comment about her work with the intention of giveing her creative advice and she acted like I was flaming her and attacking her work and her as a person.
Sigh guess thats it for that isnt it.

I understand how you feel. I was writing some Harry Potter fanficton a while ago and shared it with some of my friends, one of them an aspiring writer. I was told that it needed lots of adultery and intrique.
I don't even share it anymore. Don't let it get you down. I'd like to see your writng too, if I may be so bold to ask.

One thing that annoys me that yaoi (and het) fanfic writers LOVE to overuse are the rape/comfort fanfics.
I'm sure you've at least read ONE.
... Oh, well, they can be sweet, I guess, so long as the rape isn't taken so lightly...
The creepy as heck falling-in-love-with-their-rapist fics, however, have got to go. Unless the character is actually insane/mentally unstable or somehow that just fits for the character. It being such a cookie-cutter fanfic idea, however, freaks me out. xD;

Good lord *shudders* Annoys me too. Also the abuse/comfort thing. Especially if the rapist and/or abuser is someone who would never ever do such a thing. Like, I'll use Harry Potter: Ginny Weasley is, um, abused by her once happy-go-lucky father and her brothers are suddenly mean and her mom's dead and she's being raped by Professor Snape after Potions class and her love Harry is the only one who she can turn to because she like has NOOO friends because she's such an angsty cutter????
