Psycho Le Cemu is my favorite. Their rock is the kind you can really dance to, and I adore their music. I had never listened to them until I saw them live at A-kon one year, and I fell in love with them.

I like The Pillows. They are touring NYC, LA, Chicago and other cities next month.

Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

If you like older rock music, I recommend the classic J-rock band, X Japan. If you want something a little more recent, I recommend Asian Kung-Fu Generation. Unfortunately, I haven't listened to a whole lot of J-rock myself, so that's all I have to recommend for now. ^^;;

First post! *waves hello!*
Anyway, I love J-Rock! Some really good bands have already been mentioned (X Japan is awesome!). Here are some more of my favorites:
Hyde -- *points to avatar* He has three solo albums out - the last two are heavier than the first. Hello is one of my favorite Hyde PVs ^__^
Klaha -- unfortunately his solo albums are a bit hard to come by, but if you like light rock/pop, I recommend giving "Märchen" and "Setsubou" a listen if you get a chance.
L'Arc~en~Ciel -- (Hyde is their vocalist) I really like their later albums, starting with Ark/Ray. My favorite L'Arc PVs are Love Flies, Stay Away, and Jojoushi (but I love them all
Janne da Arc -- I particularly like their song Gekkouka
Buck Tick -- if you've seen the anime, Trinity Blood, they do the theme song, Dress , although a lot of their music is much heavier than that song
If you like gothic music, any of Mana's projects are good - his current band, Moi Dix Mois, is touring the US this summer. And Malice Mizer was great - their video for Beast of Blood is the reason I got into J-Rock in the first place.
For female singers - Tommy Heavenly6 has some great songs (I like Ready? and +gothic Pink+ ). Olivia Lufkin is also good - she's half American, I believe, and speaks excellent English. I especially like her song "Blind Unicorn."
And for something a bit different, there's Polysics' Kaja Kaja Goo ^^

i would suggest orange range, i've loved everything i've heard from them. hana is a beautiful song, but most of their other song have more of a rock sound to them.
the pillows were already mentioned, but i just can't help mentioning them again. they're without a doubt the my favorite japanese band.
i also like soul'd out, they're a japanese rap group, which is just too funny for words, but they aren't bad.

Pierrot and Plastic Tree are both fun bands which I like from Japan. L'Arc en Ciel is a great suggestion, and some of their albums have even been made available stateside. Psycho Le Cemu, as already suggested, is great, but they broke up a few months back.
I also recommend just searching through Google, as you'll find tons upon tons of rotation sites that offer weekly downloads and such as previews, such as Come Alive (I'm unfamiliar with the policy regarding downloading sites, so if I find something in the rules against this, I will remove the link. If someone else finds it first, let me know and I'll gladly take it down).

I'm (finally) starting to try getting into a bit of J-rock myself. I've always been a fan of American rock and I love J-pop so it seems about dang time that I try getting into more J-rock as well.
I'm looking for some recommendations of any good female j-rock singers, besides the ones I already listen to, namely Shiina Ringo, Anna Tsuchiya, and Olivia. Anyone know any?

Kotoko has some rock stuff, and she's done a lot of anime themes, so you might like that.
Every Little Thing can be too soft in their songs, but when they rock out, there's few better.
Bennie K comprises one rock singer and one rapper. If you don't mind a little rapping in what are basically rock songs, you might like them.
I would be remiss in not mentioning Ayumi Hamasaki, who is very versatile but can be hardcore when she wants to. Seek out Flower Garden as a sample. (I can send it if you like)
And there's Perfume, who is like Devo if they were teenage Japanese girls. Is that rock? It's so hard to say sometimes.

Ayu is one of my favorite singers, I've been listening to her stuff since 2002. =P And yes, I love her more rockier stuff.Sailorasteroid wrote:I would be remiss in not mentioning Ayumi Hamasaki, who is very versatile but can be hardcore when she wants to. I'll look into the stuff you mentioned, thanks =D

Hm, I like most japanese rock bands. They are all unique in their own way. ^^ In this moment, I'm listening to a Nightmare CD. Nightmare is great; Lead Vocal YOMI sounds a bit nasal, but he CAN sing. The instrumentals are top, especially the guitars.
I can only recommend that you listen to him. I'm momentarily hooked on their "Libido" CD. Great way to explore new territory. (I'm glad that I made a good choice ^^)

Heh, Mika puts me to sleep. And that's a lot saying I usually LOVE ballads. All of her songs sound the same to me.heartlessarchangel wrote:If you like any J-pop, I recommend Mika Nakashima, Nami Tamaki, and Suieteisho-jo.
But why are we talking about her in the J-rock thread...? o_O

Because her songs can be rocky at times. Have you listened to Glamorous Days? Certainly not J-Pop ^^Sylphiel wrote:Heh, Mika puts me to sleep. And that's a lot saying I usually LOVE ballads. The same goes with Ayumi Hamasaki who isn't just your typical J-Pop Princess, but also a rocker extraordinaire. Examples: Because of you, Game and Never Ever are rock songs (more rock ballads) who show otherwise ^^

I've been watching the anime Honey and Clover, and they have some fine J-rock as background music. I like the bands featured in the series, namely Spitz and Suneohair. Hell, I'm listening to them as I type.
