The 2 new Law & Order DVDs have been out for... a couple of weeks now. I picked up Criminal Intent today. I passed on SVU for now since Ice-T didn't join until season 2, so I may not be in a rush to get that set just yet.
On the plus side, the price on these sets is down to $45, as opposed to the $60 L&O: The First Year went for. On the downside, the boxes aren't as sturdy. But again, on the plus side, both of the new sets come with a $10 rebate offer(one per household). This was probably done to make up for the fact that the $10 rebate on the First Year set is now invalid...
... First Year came with a $10 rebate offer, redeemable when you bought the season 2 set in May of this year. THAT never came out.
I own't be watching this set until I get through the final disc of my Homicide box set. But it's the same setup as First Year, 22 episodes over 6 discs.

I've never seen it...how would you compare it to L&O and SVU? I'd probably pick those up before CI, however ^^;;

In some ways, it's not the same. Part of the idea is that we usually not only see the crime being committed, but sometimes know who did it. Det. Robert Goren and Det. Alexandra Eames are part of NY's major case squad, usually dealing with high profile murders, mob related killings, etc.
It stays fairly independent of the other 2 shows, with a rather unified cast, and a newly-built police precinct. But DA Nora Lewin was in episode 1, Briscoe and Green appeared in episode 7, and Van Buren in episode 20. That's just the first season.
The show's in season 3 right now. Det. Lisa Ruzzo has "replaced" Eames this season, but Eames is working a desk job. I'm not sure, but I seem to recall this being because Eames is pregnant.
