But people want them, and people want to make them. That's the free, capitalist system. Just because something is bad, we can't just forbid it.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

....Yeah. Um. I frankly think that's one of the most impractical and unrealistic ideas I've ever heard. You make the point "do you remember what happened the last time we made alcohol illegal"..do you think this would be any different? Do you think people would step back and accept that they would have to turn their alcohol over to the government and have to SIGN OUT for it?

That's just..asinine.

And then to spend the money on an entire force dedicated to keeping alcohol under wraps? Do you realize how much time and money wasted that would be, when there are so many other cheaper, less impratical ways you could tackle alcoholism problems?

I personally DO think cars should be illegal. Except solar powered ones.
Again, impractical.
Because if they were made illegal, it would be much harder to make them.
What do you think people did before there were cigarette factories? People took paper and tobacco and rolled their own cigarettes. they are NOT that hard to make. Hell, people in the deep south STILL do that if they have the resources.

Uh... how are solar powered cars any safer accident-wise than gas powered ones? I don't get it. Unless I'm totally missing something here. o_O They're environmentally friendly, yes, but how is that going to lessen accidents....?

And as Tiff said, if people want cigs/booze/whatever they will still find ways to get or make them.

I can understand not liking cigarettes, and personally I despise them and wouldn't do them myself, but it's still someone's choice. All four of my grandparents have either died or are dying because of cigarette-related reasons, but yet I still don't believe they should be illegal. The whole OMG LET'S BAN EVERYTHING THAT MAY BE DANGEROUS idea just doesn't make sense to me. Then again, I tend to believe that the less government interference in people's lives, the better.

I'm guessing she's leaning toward the whole gasoline pollution thing.

Yeah, I figured that out after making that post hence I went back and edited it. But I still don't see WTF that has to do with actual accidents, which was what I was talking about.

Solar Cars do about 1 mile an hour, so I guess it's hard to crash into stuff and explode at that speed.

But then life would suck without explosions.

Seriously? I didn't know that.

Oh yeah. Let's have all cars go at 1 MPH to prevent accidents. That would totally work in corporate America.

Anyway, enough off-topic. >_>

My bad about the gender thing. I tend to forget to look at the male/female thing in your title.

Yeah, while your ideas are nice and ideal..they just aren't practical and very realistic at all. In order to do some of the things you mentioned, you'd have to seriously change a lot of major things in the world as well.

Such as what Sylphiel mentioned...if we had all Solar powered cars, travel would slow down significantly, and the corporate and job world would have to cater to that. It's just an unrealistic thought.

Yeah, I am a dreamer. I think I was putting all my problems into it. My mom is SO close to quitting smoking that I know that if it became illegal that should we be able to quit.

The thing is..if it became illegal, she would probably do more to try and get it. Think of prohibition with alcohol. People would start making their own cigarettes and selling them. If you make something taboo and forbidden, humans naturally tend to begin desiring it more. So making something like cigarettes completely illegal would only serve to further the problem, I think.

Just look at drugs. Becuase they're so illegal, people do what they can to get them. That's where drug-related violence and such comes from.

I NEVER thought my mom would do something like that. She is way too law following. She gets annoyed with me even if I jay walk. But then again, you never know.

Drugs, cigs, and alcohol, as said before, don't really ruin people's lives. Excessive use does. Just like fasting occasionally--many religions include fasting in their rituals, and no harm comes of it. But if fasting becomes an addiction... obviously you die. Should fasting be outlawed just because people become addicted to it? No.

Excesses of damn near anything can hurt you and ruin your life. Anyone can become addicted to anything if he or she has some sort of emotional hole he or she needs to fill. With addictions and substance abuse, there's almost always some other issue, some other problem that the addicted person cannot solve or deal with. The real problem is not the means by which people escape, but the escapist urges themselves.

I drink sometimes (whoo, vodka!) and smoke pot sometimes and smoke cigarettes sometimes. But I really don't have anything I need to escape from, so it's not a problem. I've never lost friends or missed school or done anything stupid as a result of my actions because I'm very careful and controlled. It's just a bit of youthful experimentation that I'll grow out of in the future. My dad's pretty tolerant of it, too, as long as I do it in a safe environment. He went to college in the sixties, so he has no right to be an ass about it.

one of his "back in the day" stories...
Dad: So, I was at this concert and I was right in front of the speaker, and this guy gives me something and lights it up and says "Here, smoke this!"
Me: ...so did you smoke it?
Dad: *sighs* Anthy, it was 1964. Of COURSE I smoked it.

He's a well-paid, accomplished product designer. Not all drug users are criminals or lazy bums.

I do, however, think the whole "go to college, get DRUUUUNK" thing is absolutely stupid and irresponsible. Your parents aren't hawking out six grand per semester for you to show up wasted to class, dipshit. *grumblegrumble*

Here I go...

Alchohol: I've drank before, I've never been drunk simply because I wasn't and still ma not used to the way liqours taste. I'm sure I'll get there but I'm fine for now.

Cigarettes: My Grandmother and eventually my Mother died from lung cancers. I believe smoking cigarettes is a disgusting habit and I think you are weak and stupid if you cannot stop.

Marijuana: I won't say wether or not I've done this before but I will say it should be legalized. There's no reason why it shouldn't. Alchohol is more harmful than Marijuana is.

Other drugs: I'm scared to death of anything else. Cocaine, meth... it all sounds very scary to me. [/b]

ADMIN MODE:

That's borderline insulting. For all you know, there may be people on here who smoke, or people who struggle to quit. My mother smokes, as does my brother. They've tried to stop, and cut down heavily after my father had his heart attack. It doesn't make them stupid. Nicotine is ADDICTIVE. Please, watch it with the insults. It's rude and uncalled for.

Actually, most thrifty smokers roll their own, Southern or no. Tobacco is much, MUCH cheaper if bought in bulk and rolling papers... well, are rolling papers, available in books. The smoke is smoother, too, and most likely healthier (in comparison) to processed tobacco, which has more nicotine and additives. Of course, there's no filter with hand-rolled cigs, so there's more tar.

Either way it's unhealthy, I guess.

I don't pay too much attention to it, so I couldn't say what group favors rolling the most in the Midwest. I wonder if there are statistics for that sort of thing... probably tobacco companies do demographic studies like that.
