The meaning of your name

Post by SeiUsa » Sun Dec 04, 2005 11:41 pm

Do you know your name meaning (hopefully)? If so do you think it applies to you?
My name Kellie means Warrior Woman/Defender. I guess that applies to me because I hate seeing my friends, family, or any personal issue being put down, so I usually stand up for it. I don't know about the warrior part, but I do think it's neat to have :)

And of course…”Tigers bite you.”

My first name means either Annointed of Baptised. I prefer annointed because it sounds cooler. My middle name means either Bitter, bitter sea, or the perfect one. I'm not sure what my last name means because it comes from a town "back in the old country" :P

My first name definately applies to me. As for my middle name. Bitter? Sometimes. Bitter Sea? 0__o not sure how I could apply it to me. The Perfect One? Of Course ^_____^

I recall being told when I was little, that my name, Meghan means "strong". It kind of suits me, I think since I've been dealing with depression and whatnot.

My first name means Bearer of Christ. My middle name is a crowning glory. My mother's maiden name is a reference to a thunder god and my last name is a type of pilgrim as referenced in Romeo and Juliet (just before the "give me my sin again", IIRC)

For first name meanings, Behind the Name is a good resource: http://www.behindthename.com/
My first name Melissa means bee and so my grandmother called me my little honeybee because of it. My middle name Diane means heavenly, divine. I find my middle name suits me quite nicely.

Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you''ve got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.

My actual first name (which no one really calls me by) is Brittany. It is the name of a region in France, but the etymology of the word itself is believed to come from the Celtic words for strong and industrious.

Keira, one of my middle names, is a descendant of an Irish name (Ciaran) meaning black or dark. Some have also said that it means "dark river" or "dark hair," but I haven't been able to confirm either. It's hard to do in-depth searches on names with famous people attached to them. I'm looking at you, Keira Knightley. =_=

Jade, my other middle name, is just the name of a pretty rock. Jade being a term that covers the two minerals jadeite and nephrite.

I <3 etymology.

Thanks for that site, Kameko! I just used it to find out about my name (which I never knew about before!)-

Rhea -Latinized form of Greek ‘Ρεια (Hreia), meaning unknown, perhaps related to ‘ρεω (hreo) "to flow" or ‘ρεος (hreos) "stream". In Greek mythology Rhea was a Titan, the wife of Cronus, and the mother of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Demeter and Hestia. Also, in Roman mythology a woman named Rhea Silvia was the mother of Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome.

Well I knew about the whole Mother of Zeus thing, but I didn't know about the particular meaning. "to flow"? I know I certainly don't go with the flow. XD

Okay, well I have no idea about my last name - I know it's Jewish, and I'm not Jewish because I'm Irish. So we must've had a Jew in our family somewhere.

Rebecca (given name) - From the Hebrew name Ribqah, possibly meaning "a snare" in Hebrew, or perhaps derived from an Aramaic name

Angelica (middle name) - Derived from Latin angelicus meaning "angelic", ultimately related to Greek αγγελος (angelos) "messenger"

Um...well, I'm not sure if these names applies to me at all...

From Behind the Name:

Jennifer:
Old French form of the Welsh name Gwenhwyfar, which is composed of the elements gwen meaning "fair, white" and hwyfar meaning "smooth". In Arthurian legend she is the beautiful wife of King Arthur. Her betrayal of her husband with Mordred prompted the battle of Camlann, which led to the deaths of both Mordred and Arthur. Later versions of the legends tell of her adulterous affair with Sir Lancelot.

Lynne:
From an English surname which derives from Welsh llyn "lake". It can also be a short form of LINDA or names which end in lyn or line.

Neat ^_^

"Gilberto" - Spanish derivative of "Gilbert", it means "bright pledge", derived from the Germanic elements gisel "pledge, hostage" and beraht "bright". It was introduced to Britain by the Normans.

"David" - Possibly derived from Hebrew dod meaning "beloved".

Suzanna; Varient of Susanna
From Sousanna, the Greek form of the Hebrew name Shoshannah which was derived from the Hebrew word shushan meaning "lily" (in modern Hebrew this also means "rose").
This could explain my obession with Lillies and Roses. Which, I kid you not, I do have.

LEIGH (my middle name)
From a surname derived from Old English leah or Middle English legh, which means "meadow".

So, my name means Meadow Lily/Rose :D
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

Cynthia = Latinized form of Greek Κυνθια (Kynthia) which means "woman from Kynthos". This was an epithet of the Greek moon goddess Artemis, given because Kynthos was the mountain on Delos on which she and her twin brother Apollo were born.

Nicole = French feminine form of NICHOLAS, commonly used in the English-speaking world.

Ooo, fun..... o__O;;

MY FIRST NAME:
Steven - Usual English form of STEPHEN. The filmmaker Steven Spielberg, director of 'ET' and 'Indiana Jones', is a famous bearer of this name.

From the Greek name Στεφανος (Stephanos) which means "crown". Saint Stephen was an early Christian martyr who was stoned to death, as told in Acts in the New Testament. Another Saint Stephen is the patron saint of Hungary, the first Christian king of that country (10th century). As well, this was the name of kings of England, Serbia, and Poland and ten popes. More recently it is borne by the British physicist Stephen Hawking and the American author Stephen King.

MY MIDDLE NAME:
Micheal - From the Hebrew name Miyka'el which meant "who is like God?". This is the name of one of the seven archangels in Hebrew tradition and the only one identified as an archangel in the Bible. In the Book of Revelation in the New Testament he is portrayed as the leader of heaven's armies, and thus is considered the patron saint of soldiers. This was also the name of nine Byzantine emperors and a czar of Russia. Other more modern bearers of this name include the 19th-century chemist/physicist Michael Faraday and basketball player Michael Jordan.

Another interesting fact I wanted to post is that Ringo Star's name is actually Japanese for "apple". I thought it was really neat that he appeared in an apple juice commercial.

....Your middle name is Micheal? Not Michael? If so, then we have the same first and middle names, right down to the spelling.

Odd.
