Mozilla Firefox

Post by Tiff » Fri Dec 02, 2005 7:47 pm

I've been considering using the Mozilla Firefox browser, but I don't know much about it. I'm getting sick of some of the crap with IE.

Does anyone here use firefox? If so, how is it? Is it good? What differences are there between firefox and IE?

Any information would be helpful.

Thanks!

I've been a Firefox user since sometime last year.

The security is better. The chances of contracting spyware, adware and other nasties will be decreased. Since I've used it I havn't had one infection.

... Thats all I really care about. Other people may give you more reasons, but that's the main reason that I use it and continue upgrade to all the newer versions.
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

It's also much less buggy then IE and when their is a bug the people at Firefox are quick to fix it.

Going with an alternative browser is good, since hackers and such are going to attack the browser that has the most users to hack into. However, I swear by Opera since I started using it a few years ago. The abundance of shortcut keys plus the fact that it has its own taskbar and a guaranteed pop-up blocker sell it for me. Maybe you should try both and decide which you like.

Just to add on to what everyone else has said, another feature about Firefox I like is tabbed windows. You can have one browser open and have multiple tabs to view multiple sites, rather than have lots of new windows for sites open at once.

well, i've downloaded and installed it, and so far it's pretty smooth. I'm trying to figure out the tab thing. x_X it freaked me out when I first did it, becuase I ended up opening 34 links -_-

In addition to adaware, you may want to run spysweeper. The first time I ran it, it got all the stuff that ad-aware didn't find.

Holy cow, I'm spoiled on tabbed browsing. I took me a while to get used to it, but now I just can't remember how I was able to surf without them.

Also, if it's spyware you're worried about, you should get a software firewall like Norton or ZoneAlarm. I use the latter. It detects when any program is trying to access the Internet, and lets you say no. So if it's something you've never heard of, you say no, and it withers on the vine.

;_; I tried spysweeper, and then my trial version ran out. But when I had it, it did weird things. Like it claimed it got rid of that one spyware that kept coming back, but it didn't.

I've always heard Norton is horrible.I've never heard of Zonealarm...*ponders*

http://www.zonelabs.com/ Go to "Download & Buy" on the left hand menu and then the plain "ZoneAlarm" second from the right. They'll try to sell you the for-pay version several times, but don't bother--the regular one works fine. If you need me to walk you through it, hit me up on AIM.

o___o Damn. That must have been one persistant piece of spyware.
I was fortunate enough to download spysweeper before they set the expiration feature in. It'll only search for the spyware that was pre-programmed into the application, but it's better than nothing. I have to pay for the upgrades, but alas: i'm cheap. I suppose when I get some extra cash I'll buy the pro version.

I've never hear of ZoneAlarm either. Download.com, HO!

::Edit:: XD;
Thank you for the link Sailorasteroid. Saved me a trip.

>< it's this thing called Winfixer, and it'll pop up in the middle of surfing a site...it'll first pop up like a "do you want to download" prompt, and then no matter what youdo, whether you close it or what, it'll then pop up into a big window like you're downloading. I try to close that, but then another popup comes, showing how many "errors" I have on my computer. I close that.

Then about 1/2 hour later, the cycle starts over.

Arrgh. I had that. I think I eventually got rid of it using Spybot Search and Destroy.

I tried Mozilla Firefox, but didn't like it much. I use Maxthon now, which is fairly similar to Internet Explorer, but has tabbed browsing.

Reminds of the trojin horse I got that I can't get rid of. Though less annoying. Every 24 hours at exactly the same time everyday, an error message saying a file can't be find pops up (usually 4 windows of it). You click ok and then my Virus scanner saids it detects a virus. It pops back up several more times.

It depends on the site, and it's random. Sometimes everythin will load fast for me, other trimes it won't. And Firefox loses connections sometimes.

But since using Firefox, I haven't gotten one single popup from that winfixer shit.

So i'm sticking with it for now. It's worth it to not have the aggravation.

Firefox doesn't load the pages slower for me, but it does take longer to start up. I read something about it in a review beforehand, though, so I was expecting that.

I've been using Firefox for awhile now (since the 0.5 release, I think), and I don't think I could go back to IE. The customization options are just too spiffy for me.

Definitely stick with FireFox. After you use it, you'll never go back to IE again for browsing.

As for your spyware problems, use AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy, and use Spyware Blaster for immunization.

AdAware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Spyware Blaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

If you tell them to fight, they'll fight. But they need to be inspired, and let's face it, 'Superman'...the last time you really inspired anyone... was when you were dead." -- Batman, to Superman, Infinite Crisis, issue 1
