Christmas Songs

Post by Sylphiel » Sat Nov 26, 2005 1:27 pm

What are everyone's favorite and least favorite Christmas songs?

I don't really have a favorite, since most of them annoy me to death. But there are some I like. "What Child Is This" is maybe my favorite traditional one, it's got a beautiful minor melody, one of the very few Christmas songs IN minor. Untraditional...? umm... Hanson's "At Christmas" is really nice, but I like a lot of their Xmas CD a lot. *ashamed* ^_^;;; I also like the song "The Night Before Christmas", not sure who originally did that one. I like Amy Grant's version.

I also like the Christmas version of Because I Got High ... XD... thanks Tiff =P

Least favorite is probably the chesnuts roasting song because it's so corny and done to utter death. Everybody and their mother has covered it. >_____<

One of my pet peeves with Christmas songs is when people play them too early... like before Thanksgiving. The people upstairs in the apartment above us were doing just this a couple weeks ago. Ugh. Now that it's after turkey day though, I'm curious what you guys like/dislike =P

Funny you should say that, because I like to start my xmas song playing around 1st November. And there are a couple of xmas songs I will keep playing all year.

My favorites are:

Last Christmas - Tomizawa Michie. Or, as I'll sometimes jokingly call it, Rast Chlistmas. Beautifully sweet arrangement, plus the little spoken poems in between the verses in Michie's thick accent are very cute.

So Merry Christmas - Mihimaru GT. I love everything Mihi does, and this is the only song I know that is in their "hip-pop" style. Also, they're very good when they include non-modern elements in their songs (Kaerouka, @train), and this has the chanting chorus as a background to the rapping.

Same Old Lang Syne - Dan Fogelberg. This one always makes me cry, because it's this tale of two people whose lives have just gone completely wrong because they didn't get together, and they meet, only both are too entrenched in their miserable lives to correct the problems and stay together, and you know they'll probably never see each other again, but this one meeting gives them a little consolation.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

I really don't care much for Christmas Music. At least, not right now. The radio station I usually listen to became the "offical" Christmas station (or so they call themselves) a week before Thanksgiving. Christmas music all the time. Non-stop. Until Christmas day *tick*

I still like Listening to "Last Christmas" by WHAM!, though. It's a nice song.
And really, why shouldn't we be afraid? In case you haven't heard, life is terminal. Cigarettes will kill you. So will your cellphone. Your car is a deadly weapon and alcohol is a quiet killer. Don't lick the lead-based paint on the walls. Don't lick the back of a postage stamp and certainly don't lick any strangers! That will bring you down quickly indeed. Don't drink the water but don't drink less than eight glasses a day. Your enviroment is toxic, your natural resources are dwindling, your days are numbered, but what ever you do, don't panic! The stress, don't you know, will kill you.

I second Sylphiel on "What Child Is This", and add "The First Noel" to the list. For untraditional, I like Elton John's "Step Into Christmas" since it's so upbeat but still Christmasy. And if it counts, the entire Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack

>_>
<_<

Come on, that's totally a Christmas movie!

Where Are You Christmas? by Faith Hill is the only one I can stand any more. I'm serious, Christmas music just annoys the hell out of me otherwise.

XD in case you can't tell, Tiffu ADORES christmas music.

Hell, Tempy..I've been listening to our area's "official christmas station" since Thanksgiving. XD;; so I guess it's good for us weirdos.

As for you, Sylph..LMFAO @ your tiny text. It's a great song, indeed.

My favorites:

Christmas Eve Sarajevo - Trans Siberian Orchestra
Christmas Canon - Trans Siberian Orchestra
The Angel and the Little Blue Bell - Brenda Lee
Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee
Oh Holy Night - by just about everyone. I adore that song.
Last Christmas - George Michael

Least Favorites:
Little Saint Nick. HATE.
Just about any version of Santa Clause is coming to town. Annoying.

Well the only Christmas CD I have is "The Grinch Original Soundtrack". The live-action version.

I got to admit I have downloaded and listened to both of the Sailormoon Christmas albums and like them as well.

Personally, it's such a tough pick on what I like and don't like here, since I've liked just about every Christmas song I've heard so far. I suppose I'm a bit like Tiff here.

Dude. TSO fucking RULES. I saw them live a few years ago. BEST. EVAR.

If I get married around Christmastime (which is kind of what I'd love to do), then that song is playing during my aisle walk.

...I'm not even fucking kidding.

My absolute favorite is Joy to the World. I love it because its somewhat religous, but more upbeat than most of the religous carols.

Least favorite...Ugh...A few years ago at work, they kept playing this dreary slow version of Frosty the Snowman. I have no idea who did that particular version. How on earth does one take Frosty the Snowman and play it slowly and make it dreary? O_o;;

I'm not really a fan of Christmas songs, but I do have 2 favorites.

Favorites:

1: The Christmas Shoes by 3 of Hearts. Just lovely.

2: Christmas Carol by Skip Ewing. Same.

Non-favorites:

Pretty much any traditional Christmas song.

Call me weird, but I love all those corny Christmas songs. XD

Like-

Jinglebell Rock: Always reminds me of Home Alone, 'cause it's playing in that scene where the kid's trying to fake that his parents are home by moving cardboard cutouts around behind the curtain. XD

Deck the Halls: I don't think it's actually called that, but whatever. I only know the first line. XD

12 days of Christmas: Because this one reminds me of Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds, since they did a cover of this in the early 90's. On the CD, they get to about the 7th day and then they fade out and you don't hear them again until the 3rd. :P

OK, about "Christmas Shoes". . . the first time I heard it, I thought, oh, so sad, poor kid. Then after a few times it hit me. . . the kid in the song probably scammed the singer! He's going to wait till the store re-opens with a new cashier, return the shoes for cash, then go buy drugs. He's probably laughing his ass off as soon as the guy leaves, "Ha! Dying mother bit gets 'em every time!"

OK, that's cynical and depressing, but it's a really sappy song.

That was Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, not Jingle Bell Rock. XD but Brenda Lee (whose version is featured in Home Alone) does sing well-known verseions of each.

I don't really have any favorites... or ones I dispise... I'm kinda inndifferent about Christmas songs. heck better those clogging up the radio stations than boy bands or britney spears. *shudders*

12 days of christmas will always now remind me of South park, and Jimmy taking 3 days to sing it. XD

I love Christmas music! It's one of my favorite parts of Christmas and the only time of the year I actually listen to the radio as the rest of the year I just listen to my cd player. Some of my favorite traditional Christmas songs are Jingle Bells, Rudolph The Red-Nose Reindeer, the original Frosty The Snowman song (I can't stand this updated version they've been playing on the radio lately that has this new verse added; it's ruining one of my favorite songs!), Sleigh Ride, Silver Bells, Winter Wonderland, and White Christmas. I also like all the Sailor Moon Christmas songs. It's fun listening to them in Japanese and try to sing along with them in English. Other Christmas songs I like are I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus (yes, daddy), The 12 Gifts Of Christmas, and this other version of The 12 Days Of Christmas who's singer I can't recall right now, but for the first day, they sing a beer in a pear tree instead of a partridge. But my all-time favorite Christmas song is the original version of Feliz Navidad. I just love how energetic and bouncy the song is. It always manages to put me in the Christmas spirit, even when it isn't Christmas.
"If we can''t comprehend the plan at hand, how could a higher plan make any more sense? I'd say you can only be a martyr if you know what you are dying for, and choose it"-Elphaba

I quite like the Aussie christmas song, "Six White Boomers". It's all about Santa helping a joey find its mummy (the boomers of the title are white kangaroos).

Oh, and there's Stan Freberg's brilliant "Green Christmas", where Mr Scrooge is transformed into a then-contemporary businessman, and Bob Cratchit becomes a cigarette company owner who is convinced that Scrooge is ruining the spirit of the holiday (the scenario plays out at a board meeting).
We wish you a merry Christmas
We Wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
Now please buy our beer!
Tom Lehrer has a Christmas song too, but it isn't as memorable as, say, The Masochism Tango or We Will All Go Together When We Go. The song is yet another attack on the commercialism of the holiday.

Oh, and I also like Weird Al's blatantly Lehrer-inspired piece, Christmas at Ground Zero. Best way to savagely murder a sacred holiday ever.

Oh, and Troy Cassar-Daly has performed a variation on Jingle Bell Rock which incorporates the beginning of Jailhouse Rock.

Oh, and once I got these CDs that have various traditional songs (plus a few new ones) set to a rock beat, with no breaks in between tracks. This is something that should never ever be attempted again by non-professionals.

Also, I don't know about you guys over in places that aren't in the Southern Hemisphere, but down here, we have a series of Christmas Carol concerts. Generally, these are of very high quality, with many Australian celebrities (including the likes of Sophie Monk, Simon Gallaher and Adam Lopez) performing. These generally include a kids' segment, where dialogue is exchanged and the big event is Santa appearing on stage (in the one I did, he rode in on a Mustang to settle a debate about which mode of celebration was better).

Oh, and finally:
Dashing through the bush, in a rusty Holden ute
Kicking up the dust, Esky in the boot
Kelpie by my side, singing Christmas songs
It's Christmas time and I am in my singlet, shorts and thongs!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
It's Christmas in Australia on a scorching Summer day
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is Beaut
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden ute.
"That new girl? She seems kinda weird to me. And what kind of name is Buffy anyway?"
"Hey, Aphrodisia!"
