EGL means "Elegant Gothic Lolita". It's a style that combines a little girl/doll look with the gothic look. It involves a lot of lace, ribbons, generally black and white colors, but there of course can be any color, and generally white makeup. It originates in Japan, but if you go to an anime convention, you'll see plenty of girls (and sometimes guys o_o) dressed up as EGLs. There are fan drawings, and I've seen a manga or two with EGL characters (such as Paradise Kiss).
did that help?

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Paradise Kiss is a good one...it's mainly about fashion, but the styles are very EGL influenced...I dont' remember the name of the other manga I saw advertised. I've never read it, I just saw an ad with the most awesome-looking EGL manga chick.

Yes, Paradise Kiss is an excellent EGL manga. Miwako and Isabella wear some of the coolest outfits I've ever seen. *looks at screenname* I'm also biased, as Paradise Kiss is my favorite manga. Another EGL manga is Shutterbox. Anything by Ai Yazawa is good for EGL (she does ParaKiss, and she's working on Courtney Love's Princess Ai)

Shutterbox is being released by TokyoPop. I've seen the first volume out in stores. What's really interesting about it is that its American, at least I think it is. I remember reading on the TokyoPop website about it being amerimanga.

Lolita Fashion

Post by Queen Of Hearts » Sun Jun 29, 2008 5:22 pm

So, since a lot of us are fans of Japanese culture, I was wondering if anyone here was into lolita?

First off, here is the million dollar question. What is lolita fashion? Contrary to popular belief, lolita fashion was first founded in the 1970's. It started when a brand called 'Pink House' started making clothes mimicking colonial or 'Prairie' style clothes. J-rocker Mana did not create Lolita. Popular lolita brand Angelic Pretty, was formed around this time, in 1979.

Lolita is not about the book at all. There is no deep, sexual meaning to lolita fashion. Actually, I'd rather have my child dress in a fashion called "Lolita", instead of wearing todays mainstream fashions. Whereas, our fashion relies on being sexy, and appealing to men, Lolita involves covering your body. There is no low cut tops or skirts in lolita. Lolita is dressing for the pleasure of yourself, instead of men.

The style didn't really kick off until late late 80's, with the visual kei explosion. Bands scouting members wearing the frilly style. One of the most popular being J-rock group 'Malice Mizer', the main entrapenour of the group, Mana, wearing Lolita fashion.
In 1988, popular sweet lolita brand, Baby the stars shine bright was founded by Akinori Isobe. The style skyrocketed. Brand Meta came out in 1997, and Mana's brand, Moi Meme Moite, came out in 1999.

Also, contrary to the popular belief. EGL does not apply to the whole fashion. EGL, meaning 'Elegant Gothic Lolita', and EGA meaning 'Elegant Gothic Aristocrat', only applies to Mana and his brand of clothing. It doesn't apply to the whole fashion.

Lolita, like other Japanese street fashions, has a certain look to it. Skirts have to be knee length. A blouse must always be worn under a jumper skirt. coordination is key. Lolita is a fashion that stands out, but, cosplay-esque accessories and dresses are not tolerated. High quality clothes are favored over cheap replicas bought off ebay. Lolita is a strict fashion, and, all to often, people wander into a community with a cheap, hot topic lace-covered skirt, and a cheap blouse, and call themselves lolita. A lot of people wander into conventions with this idea.

However, within the guidelines and rules of the fashion, there is plenty room for originality. You have the common 'Gothic Lolita', which holds the lolita look, but, adorns it with crosses and gothic motifs. Then, there is sweet lolita, which is the main lolita style. This holds a cute, childish look, with pastel colors, and cute motifs of pastries and sweets. Within sweet lolita holds many other styles. Hime Lolita, which features the same look as sweet lolita but with longer skirts and crowns. Then there is sailor lolita, that looks like a lolita-fied version of sailor uniforms. There is boy style ("Kodona"), Wa-lolita, classic lolita, and punk lolita.

And that can be elaborated by discussing the fashion. An EGL topic is an EGL topic, ESPECIALLY since you started your OWN topic with the words "What is lolita Fashion?" and proceeded to ANSWER said question.

Please don't start arguing with me about something as minute as this.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

I wasn't arguing, thank you, just stating something, but, you can choose to believe what you wish.

You may not have been "arguing," but you were contesting. Semantics aside, there is no reason to respond to an admin with that kind of attitude. Don't do it again.

Back on topic.
