Going back to Windows from Linux

Post by Miyamoto » Wed Nov 05, 2003 10:10 pm

Hi minna! ^^ I have a friend who I converted to Linux that wants to go back to Windows because he's got stuff to do that Linux won't do. How is that done? I've tried to get him to make a boot floppy but that doesnt seem to work... Any ideas?

Yeah, have him reformat his comouter with windows. Stick the CD in, restart and boot from the CD, delete the linux partitions, create one for windows using the now unpartitioned space, and install windows.

If you have(or can get) XP, all you need to do is boot from the cd and XP will automatically enter setup and allow you to format

Yeah, same with 2000 and I think ME, though I'm sure the 98s are bootable too. Might want to check the BIOS settings on the system to make sure the CD and floppy drives read for a boot record before the hard drive if that's the problem you're having right now.

Dan, I'm not doing it right now.. I don't need to do it.. my friend does. He has to do something and he can't figure out how to under Linux.... I know he likes it but he needs Windows back for practical reasons...

First off, I'm well aware that you're not doing it right now and that it's not even you that's doing it, so I don't expect advice that I give to be taken immediately or anything like that, but there's no need for a snappy response like that, especially to someone trying to help out.

Second off, the BIOS settings are the settings on the motherboard that have options in them that pertain to how the system runs before even loading any OS up. If the computer isn't booting from CDs or floppys, chances are the boot order in the BIOS needs to be changed so it checks those drives for a boot record before going to the boot record on the hard drive. From what you've posted, that's all I can figure out from here, and if that works, just have him follow the steps on my first post here to can linux and install windows.

Heh. I knew what the BIOS settings were and I'm sorry for not making the situation clear. Sorry for upsetting you if I did Dan-san. ^^
