the Jdrama/Kdrama/HKdrama/Cdrama thread

Post by Jusenkyo no Pikachu » Wed Sep 28, 2005 8:56 am

In the Soapies thread, someone posted about Full House. As that's actually a Korean drama, and not really a soap (as soaps are generally unending stories about groups of people, and Full House is only 15 episodes long), I've created a separate thread for Asian dramas (and who can fault me for posting about my interests?).

Summer Snow
This is the drama I've seen the most of, and it is excellent. It tells the story of Natsuo (Tsuyoshi Domoto of KinKi Kids), a young man who's been forced to grow up quickly in order to take care of his deaf brother and teenage sister (and her nigh-delinquent boyfriend). A series of odd incidents leads to Natsuo meeting a young teller named Yuki (Ryoko Hirosue). They fall in love, despite his passion for scuba-diving and her enlarged heart. I haven't yet seen the final episode (due to an inability to download it--it's five years old and I was just too late in getting it), but i have seriously enjoyed what I have seen.

Densha otoko
Now this is the one I'm getting into seriously. After only one episode. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it started as a series of posts on 2ch, Japan's biggest forum, in which an otaku ("Densha otoko") recounted how he helped save a woman ("Hermès") from an alcoholic. Hermès thanked Densha otoko by sending him a tea set, and it evolved from there into one of the most popular stories on the forum. Here, Densha otaku is named Tsuyoshi Yamada, and Hermès is named Saori Aoyama. The incident itself brings to mind an incident I had with a chromer (although he one-ups me by actually standing up to the alcoholic). And now I'm seriously admiring his courage. Maybe I should ask SBS to broadcast this show--it'd be huge, by their standards.
"That new girl? She seems kinda weird to me. And what kind of name is Buffy anyway?"
"Hey, Aphrodisia!"
--unaired Buffy pilot

If you're reading this, then you've lost the game.

Gumiho/The Nine-Tailed Fox/Forbidden Love
This story takes the asian legend of those mystical nine-tailed foxes with human forms and gives it a modern, forbidden love scheme with tons of action in between. The foxes have magical powers. Even though they look human, the only way for them to survive is by eating livers.

It's mainly about this organization of foxes who tries to punish other foxes who kills humans to eat their livers (the organization eats the human livers from corpses). A police named Min-woo gets a hold of one of those liver trades and decides to investigate. At the same time, a fox by the name of Shi-yeon went to terminate the violators. Because the police found out about this, and to prevent him from spreading word that foxes exist, she must kill him. Before she does however, she notices that the guy is wearing the same necklace as her childhood friend who was killed by mysterious people. And it all starts from there. :D It's really good!

As for Hong Kong TVB dramas, there are so many good ones that I don't know which to put here! :P For those who are interested, here's a review site with tons of reviews on Asian dramas and movies, and even anime.
