Corpse Bride

Post by Sylphiel » Sat Sep 24, 2005 1:57 am

...Well, people? What did everyone think?

Dan and I saw it tonight, I thought it was pretty good, not spectacular, but good. It seemed to fly by though... hard to believe that an hour and 20 min used to be like the norm for movie length nowadays that they are so much longer.

My only complaints about the movie were...
1. It started out too slow
2. The music could have been better, a LOT better
3. The main character was kinda annoying. I like Johnny Depp too, but... guh...

and the biggie
WTF DID HE PICK THE LIVING GIRL FOR?? >_< She was lame and had no personality... if I was him I would have just gone through with it and married Emily instead, so what if she's dead :P she's awesome, and better in every other way 8)
I saw it tonight to. It had it's flaws, but I really liked it. It was very funny and beautiful. Don't know if it will replace Nightmare Before Christmas as my favorite film yet.

It was kind of slow at the beginning, but I thought the pacing for the rest was fine. I can't quite comment of the music since the sound at my theatre was kind of messed up. Once I buy the soundtrack I'll comment on it. Although I did love the piano songs and "Tears to Shed". It was a bit short, but most Stop Frame animation films are (although Corpse Bride was longer than TNMC I think).
Yeah, I thought the whole Victor goes with Victoria thing was wrong, but how would you end the film if he did go with Emily? And when I think about it, it wasn't really his decision since she told him to go with Victoria. But you could tell he loved Emily more, Hell he was willing to drink poison and DIE to be with her.

There was one great scene in the movie though that almost made me cry. When the dead have come up the the land of the living and are walking towards the terrified people. The little kid walks up to one of the corpses and is held up by him, then says "Grandpa" and hugs him T_T. So heartwarming.
I'm dieing to buy the toys. I think they come out on Oct.5. They look just like the puppets used for the movie.

I thought it was cute when Victoria's dad calls Victor "Vincent", which also happens to be the name of Tim Burton's first stop frame movie.

Am I weird becuase I have NO desire to see this movie? The previews do not appeal to me at all, which is weird. And the maggot part continues to gross me out (you know..where her eye pops out and she goes "maggots. hehehe." Uh. no.)

x_X everyone says it's good, and it got great reviews, but..bleah. I dunno.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Nah, you're not weird. I felt that way about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... and I'm still not gonna watch that.

If you liked the Nightmare Before Christmas you might like this one, but if not you probably won't.

I thought the maggot scene was kinda cool--I've always liked the "supernatural entity passes off supernatural occurances as normal to the shock of normal person" motif. But yes, I have no real desire to see the movie.

See, for me, Tim Burton is a fine director for adaptations, but terrible for original works. The first Batman was good and the second was servicible, Charlie and the Chocolate factory was wonderful visually, and Ed Wood, his biopic, was awesome and would have been a sure Oscar pick in any other year (it was up against Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, and Pulp Fiction).

But when he's not adapting something, I all too often don't "get" the movie. Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands made no sense to me because I didn't understand the "making fun of the yuppies" thing--I live in the suburbs, I'm used to all that! I haven't seen Nightmare Before Christmas in a long time, but I remember thinking that I couldn't understand the motivations of the creatures--it was like it was Burton's own world and without knowing his premises, I was lost. And Mars Attacks was inaccessible unless you had already seen Independence Day. When I finally did, I was laughing through the whole thing because I finally got the Mars Attacks jokes. Not a good way to run a movie.

OK, so, Corpse Bride. Here again he's setting up a world. Am I going to be able to understand the rules of how the dead people live? (ok, that sounds stupid, but you know what I mean) If it's anything like Beetlejuice or Nightmare, probably not. So I'll wait for it to be on free TV.

However, the bride herself is pretty sexy.

Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

See, I barely remember Nightmare. I saw it whenI was like..uh...13 or something? And I hardly remember anything from it. I suppose I should watch it again.

I've never seen Edward Scissorhands, which I've heard is amazing, but I have seen Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice is...weird, but funny at times.

Yeah she loses her eye a few times. But I'd see it if I were you. It's a good movie and it's short, so you won't be waiting for it to end if you find it boring.

ATTENTION SMUers!! McFarlane Toys has finally released the photos of ALL their Corpse Bride toys this morning. Go Here if you wish to find meaning in your life and to gaze at awe at the most kick ass toys I've seen.

These toys look just....there are no words. However, the fashion dolls are a big let down for me. I was waiting so long to see these and quite frankly they suck. The Corpse Bride is okay, although the pearls lining the dress look terrible and it looks like they used the cheapest material for her dress (but who knows, maybe it actually is a nice material and the photo just isn't doing it justice). But the Victor doll. WTF is wrong with his face 0___o. It looks like it's on smack.

The plushies are even worse, but I didn't expect them to be good anyway. The skeleton boy and girl look nice though.

But the 6 and 3 inch figures. Wow. Just wow. My only complaint with these is that I don't like how those two generals get to be made into 6 inch figures since they didn't have much screen time. I'd prefer 6 inch tall figures of Barkis and Bonejangles instead.

Yeah you can tell that by the end of October I'll have an army of Corpse Bride toys taking up my room >_> No shame!

O_O!

Wow, I think the fashion doll is really quite lovely. Maybe I don't notice the flaws becuase I don't sew. ^^; but I love the way the bride looks.

Really, it's the pearls on her dress that bug me the most. They look like they're ready to fall off. But it is a pretty doll and it looks quite tempting ;_;

Atamii has some dolls as well. Their fashion dolls look alright. Although they're $79, while Mcfarlan's are $16 I've heard.

Mars Attacks was actually based on a set of cards Tim Burton collected as a kid. The cards tell the story of an alien invasion of Earth, with each card showing a different scene. I heard that the movie is very accurate to the cards, which is quite a feat when you think about. I imagine it'd be quite hard to make a movie based on fifty some odd cards, let alone one that's accurate to the source material. Although honestly I didn't think Mars Attacks was all that good.

As for whether you'd like Corpse Bride....um, not sure. My advice would be to go see it. Even if you don't like the story, you may find something you like. If you find the Corpse Bride sexy, then see it, because she really is a likeable, beautiful character. And this is coming from the peach who went in thinking "I'm going to like this movie, but no matter what I'll hate the Corpse Bride because she'll probably end up being be a whiny, selfish bitch voiced by the irritating, no talented hussey Helena Carter" and left the theatre thinking "T_T I absolutely love the Corpse Bride and Helena is awesome."

I saw it yesterday. Really good stuff, absolutely beautiful. I really loved the cast (I nearly screamed when I saw Tracey Ullman in the credits :D ) and the music was excellent. I loved how the living are so 'dead, and the dead are so 'lively'. The climatic scene was very well done, although I didn't like how they threw in some humor. (Seriously, the maggot should've talked AT ALL during the last 10 minutes)
Was I the only one that loved the ending? I thought it was very beautiful and sad. Even if Victoria sucks, and Victor is better off with Emily
WHAA?? Tim Burton did Mars Attacks? BLECH. That was a fucking terrible movie. :?

Well, it's the human end of it that I found to be derivative. There's one scene where the Martians are running around laser-blasting people, all the while shouting "We come in peace, we are your friends." To me, a parody of the ID4 president asking for peace when the aliens have already blown up 3 cities. And there's the whole Slim Whitman thing, which to me was a send up of the drunk trailer trash guy in ID4 being the one to get the first kill on an alien ship. If all that was in the cards, maybe it's Roland Emmerich who ripped off. ^_^

Well, I first saw Carter in Twelfth Night, and that kind of stuck her in my head as an elegant-woman-type. So I'll see CB if you see that, OK? ^_^

Regarding the Fashion dolls, I found some pictures of them on ebay (which I'm too lazy to find right now) and they may not look as bad as they do on the McFarlane site. The Victor Doll actually had a normal expression and looked very accurate. The Corpse Bride Doll's dress looked a bit more up to snuff as well, so these dolls might actually be worth buying.

I also found a very interesting picture on a Tim Burton website I lurk on. It came from a magazine called Jane from March 2000. I guess the article had something to do with Tim and Lisa Marie's (his girlfriend at the time) house because they showed a photo of a very interesting and familiar scuplture he made. I just found the picture interesting and worth sharing :)

....damn that thing's freaky.

I FINALLY GOT TO SEE THE CORPSE BRIDE!!!

And just ta be safe, spoiler tag. ^^
I loved it! Sheesh, the way a lot of you guys put it, it made me feel like I was going to be SORELY dissapointed. ^^;;; But it was /awesome/ for me.
Personally, I liked him with both, Emily and Victoria. Which is weird for me. First time liking pairings but having no One True Pairing.
Eeee, Victor is adorable. xD

Emily's the one who made me cry.
Three times. ^^''
When we heard her story- which was so bizzare with the upbeat music and here I am /crying./
When she was singing. Aw... I felt SO sorry for her. ;-; And I wanted to smack Victor around. xD;;
Last part, the ending.
I knew she was going to stop him, I just knew it.
Waaaah... it was so sweet... ;-;
Were those moths? I like moths...

Ooh, Emily is so pretty. And her dress too! I love how it moved.

And she was very... expressive?

I liked the duet, so pretty. ^^

I would have cried more if I hadn't been afraid that my dad could have been lurking around. -_-;;; Guy in front of me was /bawling,/ though.
I sounded sad at the end of it and dad thought it was because I didn't like the movie. x.x

Scraps! Sooo cute.
