Latin Music

Post by Jeff » Tue Nov 04, 2003 5:58 pm

Now, seeing as most of us here enjoy shows and movies which aren't in our native language, I'm sure some of you must be into the Latin music scene. Am I right? You can talk about your favorite artists in this thread, or just Latin music in general.

My absolute favorite musician of all time is Juanes. He's from Colombia, and a lot of his music relates to the pain that terrorism has caused there. Colombia is an extremely dangerous place, you could go for a walk one day and never return. However many of his songs also have to do with love. My favorite Juanes song (and video) is A Dios Le Pido, closely followed by Fijate Bien. If any of you watch las novelas (the Spanish soap operas), then you should know that the actress who plays Sofia on Sofia Dame Tiempo is Juanes' girlfriend. May she die soon.

Another favorite artist ofmine is Shakira (Maybe it's something about the Colombians?) I enjoy both her Spanish and English songs, but not the English versions of her Spanish songs. Whenever, Wherever is really dumb compared to the original Suerte. I think Gloria Estefan wrote the English lyrics, and she's kinda known for her oddly "translated" songs. My favorite Shakira song is Ojos Asi (or as the English version is called, "Eyes Like Yours").

So, will this thread be just another eyesore, or am I not the only one who enjoys this kind of music? Even if you've only heard English songs from people like Ricky Martin or Enrique Iglesias, that would still qualify for discussion here.

omg are you kidding? I grew up in South Florida as a first-gen Cuban American, so my life is all about Latin Music. In general, any Salsa and Merengue are in my list; my female friends and classmates always had this music goin' on at their parties, especially the quinciñeras (like a Sweet 16, but Latin culture celebrates the 15th birthday). Celia Cruz is perhaps my favorite among all the artists. She did such a great variety of music, and her voice, even later in her life, was so phenominal and uplifting, even during heartening songs. I need to pick up some more beats to put into my iPod, though...I love the music, but I don't know any track names, since they're hardly ever announced at the parties ><.

I love Shakira!! Her voice is unique sounding and she has good Spanish and English songs. I agree her Spanish versions of certain songs are better though. And "Ojos Asi" is my favorite too!! Awesome. I like how it has some Arabic music influence. (She's part Lebanese since her father was of Lebanese decent) Shakira is so wonderful. She's gorgeous, has great hair and I like her belly dancing too.

Enrique Iglesias is good too but i mostly like him because he's so hot ^___^

Shakira is sooo good! She scared me the first time I saw her, but I got used to her and now I love her. Is she ever coming out with another album [spanish or english] or was her first english album her last album?

My friend tried to get me to like her..I don't care for her music at all.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

Yeah, I tried to get Parakiss Groupie to like her[Shakira], too, but no dice.

I don't like Thalia[I'm pretty sure that's her name]. I don't think she's very good. And whatever happend to Ricky Martin, I havn't heard of anything new from him, spanish or otherwise, since he did that duet with Christina Aguilera[sp???].

Shakira's English CD (Laundry Service, I think) is one of the few CDs I've actually bought. My favorite song on it is "Eyes Like Yours" (I think it's the English version of that song LadyFlameSniper was talking about).

sw33t! Shakira is the bomb diggety. I love her so much. I love "Whenever, Wherever" and "Poems to a Horse" I think it's called. She's pretty much the only Latin musician I like, especially because J-Lo isn't Latin... OR IS SHE?! dun dun dun!

I don't like Jennifer Lopez (or Je-llo as I call her). She gets categorized as a "Latin" artist, but she's not. All of her songs (someone correct me if I'm wrong) are English, and her music is more influenced by rap/R&B than Latin culture. I dislike it when people credit the "Latin Wave" to her.

I don't like much, if any, of the hybrid English/Spanish artists like Shakira and J-Lo out there, mostly because a lot of what they do would be better classified as pop/rock/R&B/etc., and embrace their Latin heritage to be more "accessible" to other demographics. But that's just me...I'm much more a fan of the "authentic" Latin/Spanish music.

I also like Mark Antony, Santana, and Gloria Estephan. I'm know that know that none of these people are strickly Latin music, but they are at least partly Latin w/ english cross over.

Yep that's the English version. I love that one too. I also bought the CD

And J-Lo has some Spanish songs but very few, maybe 3 or 4. I'm not a fan of her singing. It's okay but it doesn't strike me as anythin special. But she's a great dancer and she's beautiful
