I had a really weird (and almost scary) thought...

Post by SeiUsa » Sun Sep 04, 2005 10:20 am

OK, most of the time you'll see people (like myself) who grew up in the 80's/early 90's talk about what crap cartoons that are on today (like on Nickelodeon) and mention more than a few shows that are so much better, and that the poor little kids today are brainwashed.

Well anyway, my weird thought: I was thinking about these brainwashed kids as teens/adults, and by that time Nick became crappier even than when they were kids, and they say something like,
"I hate the crap Nick has on today! What's with that new [insert crappy cartoon] show? It's so stupid! I remember when they used to have good TV shows, like Spongebob, Zoey 101, All That, My Life as a Teenage Robot, etc, now those were GOOD shows! The early 2000's shows were the greatest! The stuff today is just dumb!"

When I had that weird thought I felt amused and disgusted at the same time, because Nick would become so crappy that these people would think that the shows they grew up on were good to begin with!

Well, you probably think this is mindless fluff, but I felt I had to share that. Post opinion if you want.

That is a worry but I reckon it’s all down to taste (no matter HOW bad it is)

Reminds me of something that happened a con

Before the Masquerade we have to line up. In the line there was I, a Lulu, Squall and Yuna (hence know as in this story as the FF lot) and a Dark Chi and we were talking and Chi and I were telling the other 3 what happens, as it was the first time. Anyway in walks these cosplayer’s as Athos, Porthos Aramis and The Lady/My Lady for Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds. Chi and I (and about every that remembered that show) yell out go OH MY GOD, how awesome, etc and the FF lot just asked Chi and I who they were cue an explanation and a clueless look on their face’s. Don’t know which one of us said it but one of us went
“Your too young to remember
And the reply was
“ That makes me feel old now”

It just struck me how werid it was that thoese kid’s ( I think they were 11-13) didn’t know what we were going on about seeing as we were 6 six older then them.

It’s just werid how much TV has changed and how good OLD show’s are going for these new shows. That been said we KNOW our stuff is good seeing as it's still around let's see Bob and co last this long :P

No new Nick show can compare with early Rugrats and Rocko's Modern Life! I'd die if kids say the stuff on Nick now is good later on. Nick getting even WORSE? Is that even possible?

I... don't think I'd like to see a generation that thinks today's Nick is good.

Zim was very good though. -nods-

I don't think it's just NICK. The whole animation world seems to suck lately. With the exception of a few shows, Cartoon Network's stuff is such a letdown. Not to mention they don't air anything made before 2003. Or if they do, it's on at some ungodly hour. Disney Channel is still.. Disney Channel. I'm sure it'll always stay that way.

Even anime has sucked this year. Did anything good come out? Anything that wasn't harem? Anything original?!

I hate that alot of cartoons are trying to get the 'anime look'. I liked my cartoons when they were cartoons. Not now that alot of them have spikey hair, and badly drawn eyes. I love Teen Titans, but damn. I'd love it alot more without the anime style, or FLCL references.

...

sorry if I went a bit off topic >_>

...

Anyway, I don't really understand why kids nowadays like this stuff. I will never, ever understand why Spongebob is so popular. Or why Kids Next Door is the most rerun show ever. Or how Mucha Luca is airing on two networks.

Actually, as far as Nickelodeon, I like Spongebob and Danny Phantom, and that is about it. I could do without the rest of the stuff they air. When they were on the air, I liked Rocko's Modern Life and Angry Beavers. But I agree on the point that Nick has just gotten ridiculous. And if it weren't for shows on Cartoon Network such as Inuyasha, Teen Titans, and Justice League, I'd have quit watching that one long ago.
Come join the party.

Speaking of Nick, today, I'm hooked on Spongebob and the Fairly Oddparents. IMO, the high point for Nicktoons was when they had Doug (the original, not the ABC version) and Ren and Stimpy.
"After all these years, you know it's not about control. It's about trying to do everything I can. And for you, it's about setting an example. Everyone looks up to you. They listen to you. If you tell them to fight, they'll fight. But they need to be inspired, and let's face it, 'Superman'...the last time you really inspired anyone... was when you were dead." -- Batman, to Superman, Infinite Crisis, issue 1

Ah! My Goddess TV is out on DVD, so that's one. If we're speaking non-DVD, Victorian Romance Emma looks to be good if the first episode is any indication. I really hope they dub since it takes place in England and so would it would be appropiate that they speak in English. Hopefully the voice actors are good.

Didn't like it.
Air

Haven't actually seen yet, but I'm not impressed from what I saw.
Negima
I hate Ken Akamatsu's stuff.

Mahoraba ~Heartful Days~
Not interesting.

Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan
Too much fanservice, and not enough plot, or good characters.

I am too picky? Because I hate alot of shows that rely on fanservice because they can't have funny characters or interesting plots. And it just seems every series in Japan right now is just about fanservice, and nothing else. (as I said before, I HATE HAREM shows)

I remember when Nickelodeon was good. Remember when they use to air (John K.-produced) Ren and Stimpy, classic Doug, classic Rugrats, and Rocko's Modern Life all in the same day? Or remember them goofy-ass game shows? Or when they aired live-action shows that were actually FUNNY?! Nowadays those shows are either not on the air at all, or on some obscure channel like Nicktoons TV and GAS (where all the game shows went).

And it's not just Nick. Disney used to air Disney Afternoon shows on Toon Disney, but now it's just marathons of Kim Possible and Buzz Lightyear. Cartoon Network used to rerun old Hanna-Barbera (including the great Flinstones and original Scooby-Doo series), but now they just show their poorly animated garbage. Foster's is good, and Camp Lazlo is amusing as it comes from the same mastermind behind Rocko's Modern Life, but what else is there? Now I just watch their Adult Swim line-up and avoid the endless reruns of Kids Next Door and freaking Ed, Edd, and Eddy they play in the daytime. And I'm still angry that they cancelled Megas XLR.

The problem with television viewers today (and in any time period, really) is that they'll think anything they see that's animated is worth sitting down and watching, regardless of whether or not the show sucks. Spongebob didn't become a hit for its awesome writing and superb art, that's for sure (not like the show has either), as didn't garbage like Danny Phantom and Jimmy Neutron, both playing on tired themes already seen dozens of times in cartoons. They sold because Nick brainwashes viewers into thinking these shows are good, and rerun them like crazy to ensure that the everyone sees them, making them wait as long as a month for a new episode, despite that the episodes were completed months and months ago. And it's only being getting worse and worse every year; Rugrats, the cartoon that put Nicktoons on the map more or less, disappeared this year, so kids can see another rerun of that damned Catscratch show. The last pre-1999 cartoon is gone, and Nick has lost its soul. I doubt they'll ever make another good show again, as won't Disney and quite possibly Cartoon Network.

The orginality and fun in animation is dead, replaced by shitty digital animation / flash animation , fart jokes, commercial tie-ins (NEW SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS BOOKCASES!!!), and crappy attempts at anime art styles. Even Japan doesn't produce anything worthwhile anymore, except for the occassional inspired title. I fear the kids of this generation, but hopefully the next generation will seek to the golden days of animation, where shows were painted by hand, there were frame rates in cartoons (and 24 per second! WOW!!), and cartoons didn't talk down. Or, perhaps, an union of old and new cartoons, like Cartoon Network USED to do. We can't let the kids of today grow up with just Spogebob and Jimmy Neutron; we can't. I won't allow such a thing to occur.

Thank heavens for DVD collections I guess, ne?

Um..Considering the fact that Keichi ONLY loves Belldandy, and Belldandy is the ONLY one of the three goddesses to love Keichi, I wouldn't really classify that as a harem show. Skuld HATES Keichi at first, and then just likes him more like a big brother later, and Urd spends all of her time match-making Keichi and Belldandy. It's not like Love Hina where there are 10 women who all love the main guy.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?

I'll agree with Tiff in that Ah! My Goddess is not a harem show. Umino, try checking out Victorian Romance Emma which is about a maid named Emma. Usually when a show has maid/s in them they are not actually maids. Their ridiculously proportioned young girls who are hired by some perverted guy to wear skimpy maid-like outfits so he can ogle them 24/7. They rely on fan service, which I also do not like as it gets real old, real fast. OMG!!!!!!! They showed panties!!!! In Emma, Emma an is actual maid who works in Victorian England and wears a real maid outfit that actually covers her. And the guy who likes her actually thinks of her as a person and is interested in her as a person. Emma also has glasses and is sentimentally attached to them, which I think is neat.

I really don't watch many cartoons anymore. I watch the old episodes of Rugrats whenever that is on, but that's about it.

Boomerang is barely existant. The vast majority of America doesn't even get it. It was here for a while in Philadelphia, but it's gone now unless you have $200 a month cable, it seems.

It's available on DirecTV--I've got it. It's a good channel, shows lots of Looney Tunes, Snorks, real old school stuff.
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

I'm so sick of the dirty "fart/burp/poop" or whatever jokes that are on cartoons today. They have to resort to these 95% of the time! If they have to constantly use those kinds of jokes, then that only shows their horrible lack of talent.

My memory is fading, so can someone remind me what year the generation started going downhill? What stupid cartoons aired that year or stupid music always singing about sex (also shows a lack of talent!) or stupid people?

And yeah, the gross-out humor is far too childish. It can get a little giggle out of me if they use it ONCE, but a whole show FULL of them in every episode? NO thanks.

Well... when I was seven, Nick got rid of a lot of its old shows that I really liked, like Are you Afraid of The Dark? and the time when Rugrats got that movie (it wasn't BAD, but that's when the voice-acting became... whiny. REAL whiny. I was like 'Tommy? Is that YOU?!' and then you see it IS Tommy and I'm like '... -blink- ...')
The Dill episodes where cute... but the Kimi ones SUCK. Hardcore.
That new opening is just telling you 'NEW EPISODE, DON'T WATCH.'

Around 1999/2000 is when I found Nick to get REAL bad.
Other channels? I'd say 2004/2005.
