MSN Messenger

Post by Usagi04 » Sat Sep 03, 2005 8:00 pm

I need some help with my MSN messenger, hopefully someone here can help. I installed the new MSN messenger on my computer, and when I tried to remove the old Windows messenger in the Add/Remove programs folder, it's not listed. Does anyone know how I can get rid of the old Windows Messenger program? Thank you. ^_^

You still have both the new and old versions on your system? I would have thought installing the new one would have overwritten the old one.

At any rate, removing the old MSN Messenger from the machine takes a bit of work, as Microsoft doesn't seem to want the average person to do it. This link should provide instructions on how to uninstall the old MSN Messenger from your computer. Good luck :)

Windows Messenger and MSN messenger are in fact two entirely different programs. Leave it to Microsoft. Starscream is correct in saying the average person cannot do it. My boyfriend claims to have a prgram that can do it for you. It's called XP AntiSpy. Try looking for it around the intraweb.

I usually delete Windows messanger with any computer I use. Typically I just close the program, and then delete the C:\Program Files\Messenger folder from my computer.

I know that doesn't take care of any DLL's or registry keys, but it does get rid of the program.

I do remember having read somewhere that, if you install MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger will automatically get installed. I don't know if this is necessarily the case, but Windows really doesn't want you to get rid of Windows Messenger.

Also, a couple of the tips involve doing some registry editing. If you haven't done it before,

The fact is, it doesn't hurt to have Windows Messenger installed. If you only use MSN Messenger, then you can just ignore Messenger. I use MSN Messenger all the time, and Windows Messenger doesn't do anything.

I realize that Windows Mesenger might be somewhat of an annoyance, but unless it's doing something to mess up your computer (e.g. launching when you run Outlook/Outlook Express, conflicting with MSN Messenger, etc.), then I would just suggest leaving it as is. If nothing else, you can delete its shortcut from the Start Menu - that way you won't even notice it's there unless you start digging through the Program Files folder.

Does anybody know how to kill that stupid MSN Messenger icon in the System Tray? It's not there originally but whenever I go to Hotmail, it pops up. When I send a mail in Hotmail, it disappears and when the page finishes loading, the icon appears again. My computer's already slow to begin with so having that off-and-on is very annoying and it makes the computer lag some more. :x

I don't think there's a way to disable it - I've looked through options in Hotmail as well as MSN Messenger, and there's nothing specific pertaining to this. It looks like Microsoft has put in some code on Hotmail's site so that, if you're using Internet Explorer, it can communicate with MSN Messenger. I'm not 100% sure, though.

However, if you use a browser like Firefox (and possibly others), that won't happen.
