Favorite bands and singers
Just make a list of your favorite bands and singers. You are also free to recommend certain favorites and even ask for recommendations of those you wanted to try out.
BANDS
~Dream Theater: Well, their lyrics certainly make you feel as if you're in a dream. And I also like the BGM and James LaBrie's singing voice.
~Eric Stuart Band: Stuart's lyrics are easy to relate to, and they aren't crude as compared to other bands. And if anyone remembers what anime he's been in or is currently doing, they get a nice fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies from me!
~Guns N' Roses: Their lyrics are somewhat easy to relate to, being that they describe life as it is without being really pretentious. And Axl Rose's obnoxious singing voice is a perfect fit for their sound.
~Iron Maiden: Somewhat deep and philosophical. And I'm thankful that Bruce Dickinson doesn't have the screaming singing voice that a lot of metal bands are so famous for.
~Nightwish: My first metal band. Basically, they sometimes sing about the same ideals that other genres of metal sing, but their lyrics are much more flowery (I believe their genre is called Flower Metal).
~Pink Floyd: The perfect band to listen to on a lazy day, especially during the summer. Ironically, it almost provokes a more adventurous side to me and makes me want to break free of the lazy air surrounding me. Weird. ^^;
SINGERS
~Enya: I think it was "Orinoco Flow" that helped me start investing in her albums in the first place. It stuck with me when I was at a young age (I was in ballet class and my teacher would have us dance to the song) and I didn't find her album "Shepherd Moons" until I was in 8th grade.
~Loreena McKennitt: Similar story. The first song I ever heard from her was "The Mummers' Dance" when I was in 4th grade and I didn't find her album "The Book of Secrets" until I was in either 8th or 9th grade.
BANDS I'M NOT SURE WHETHER TO GET INTO YET ("spend away" and "stay away" comments are more than welcome)
~Eric Clapton
~Dead Kennedys
~A Perfect Circle
~Rolling Stones
~Tool

...I always thought Enya was a band. *stupid*
Bands:
Pink Floyd - I grew up listening to them, actually, becuase my parents would play Floyd, Ozzy, Skynyrd, and Zeppelin in the car during long rides..or even short ones. XD I love their lyrics, and the flowing style of their music. "Comfortably Numb" is my favorite.
Evanescence - I love Amy Lee's voice...it's powerful, and beautiful.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - good all-around classic rock...great for an outdoor party, or just listening to while chillin' with friends, or in the car.
Black Sabbath - *__* Ozzzyyyyyy
Aerosmith - teh secks. I don't care too much for their newest stuff, but old Aerosmith is sexygood.
Singers:
Alanis Morrisette - Jagged Little Pill is one of my favorite CDs ever. I LOVE her cynical lyrics.
Loreena McKennitt - Beautiful, just...beautiful. Perfect for relaxing.
Gwen Stefani - I love her both in No Doubt, and solo, though I haven't heard as much solo.

Technically, Enya has two other people helping her out with her career. Enya composes and performs the music, Nicky Ryan produces the records, and Nicky's wife Roma writes the lyrics. So you're just about right. ^^Tiff wrote:...I always thought Enya was a band. *stupid*

Mihimaru GT great get-up-and-dance band. Does rap as it should be done, without all the issues.
THC!!Also does good upbeat stuff, but can also get a little bit mellow when they want.
Mr. Children Best name for a band EVAR. Good songs done by a buttery voice. Most of them are nice and optimistic.
Journey, the Steve Perry era. Also a great voice, and did power ballads correctly.
Solo artist:
Fayray As a bilingual singer she certainly goes for a niche market, but I'm in.

Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

Holy crap, there's no way I can list all my favorite bands off the top of my head, but I'll name a few.
BANDS:
~The Beatles
~The Beach Boys
~The Barenaked Ladies (I actually went to their concert for free on Canada Day XD)
~Hanson
~Nirvana
~Silverchair
~Puffy Amiyumi
~The Rolling Stones
~Mr Big
~GLAY
~The White Stripes
~The Wreckers
~The Moffatts (Saw their concert twice before they broke up)
~U2
SOLO:
~Michelle Branch
~Chieco Kawabe
~Ayumi Hamasaki
~Utada Hikaru
~Paul McCartney
I also listen to a lot of underground music, mainly stuff from friends who have their own bands. I don't listen to the radio. I think most of the stuff that's played on the radio is crap these days and it sounds like an artist did like 100 takes and then the best parts from those takes were edited together. I don't know if that is how the recording process actually works these days, but it sure sounds like it.

I'll provide a short commentary on why I like some of them. Not all.
Singers/singing group:
Alicia Keys- she's a great r&b singer, songwriter and producer. Her sound is unique in comparison to modern r&b
Beyonce- wonderful voice. I also love a lot of songs she did with Destiny's Child
Christina Aguilera
Madonna
Ginuwine
Lauryn Hill. And the Fugees, the hip-hop group she's from. Lauryn is an excellent singer and MC/rapper/ whatever
MCs:
Tupac- because his songs were so varied. He was flexible, covered almost everything with all the songs he made, and his flow was great.
Nas
Jay-Z- he truly got me into rap, actually. I began listening to a lot of rap back in 2000, I think it was. One song I heard that year really grabbed my attention
Kanye West
K-OS
Notorious B.I.G
Bands:
No Doubt- because their style is so varied. I'd have to say ND is myfavorite artists of all time. None of their cds sound alike, and they've been influenced by so many kinds of music. From ska, to reggae, to hip-hop, to rock. Gwen solo is OK. She has a few songs I like, but a lot of CD was too weird for my taste. Like Harajuku Girls o_O;; ND was better IMO
Garbage- I love their industrial rock techno sound that many of their songs have
Evanescence
Nightwish
Save Ferris
Soundgarden
I've been listening to a lot of reggae and reggaeton of late. I can't really say who my favorites are at the moment. Or overall. I keep on changing

Singers:
Ashanti- I love her! She's beautiful, and the lyrics to most of her songs have a lot of meaning (Rain on Me, Freedom) I don't understand why a lot of people don't like her.
Beyonce- She's really, really hot, and she's got that crazy voice. I like all of her songs, especially the ones she did with Destiny's Child
*thinks of Soldier video and drools over Beyonce*
Alicia Keys- She's really pretty and very talented. I love her voice, but I don't think it's stronger than Beyonce's. The best song she has ever made IMO is 'Fallen', her first song. That song is just great.
Selena- She is my all time favorite singer. I was really getting into her before she was killed. She has a wonderful voice and you could feel her music. Nobody is quite like her. When she died, I cried so much for her. Even today, I cry when I see her specials on TV. I can't listen to 'I could fall in love with you,' and a few of her spanish songs because I will breakdown.
Rappers
Tupac- This man had a way with words. Some of his songs like 'Keep your head up', and 'Changes' have really strong messages. I don't really think he's dead though.
Other favorite rappers include Jay-Z, Nas, Kanye, Ludacris, Nelly, Common, and Mos Def.
Reccomendations: Reggaeton. I used to absolutely hate this kind of music, but many have combined it with other forms of music like merengue and bachata and it turned out nice. Some people I'd recommend for a listen are Daddy Yankee, Wisin y Yandel, and Zion y Lennox
Wow, this is turning out to be longer than I expected. I'll post more at a later time.

Wow Jonathan, you and I have similar taste! ^_^ I too like Mos Def Common, and Selena... (and the ones we both put in our lists.) Reggaeton is cool and got so popular in the US all of a sudden. I love dancing to it, as well as all the reggaeton artists you mentioned. I'd add Ivy Queen to that list. It's funny reggaeton has the same drum beat more or less. Though the synth parts are different. but it's so contagious. It turns me on. lol
And I decided to add Sean Paul and Lady Saw to my list for favorite dancehall reggae artists.
Well I'm gonna go ahead and recommend some No Doubt songs (non-singles): Big Distraction, Different People, Start the Fire, The Climb, Doormat, Everything in Time (either version)
Edit: I also recommend K-OS (pronounced like "chaos") to anyone who for whatever reason detests hearing cuss words in rap songs. He's definitely NOT the only rap artist to make songs without cuss words. (hell Nas for example has some without them too) But frankly, I can't think of even one song he's made with cussing in it. And he doesn't only rap. He sings and plays acoustics too. He's so underrated in hip-hop
And I decided to add Sean Paul and Lady Saw to my list for favorite dancehall reggae artists.

It's true, LadyFlameSniper, we do have similar taste! I love hip hop, but I LOVE R&B a lot more. What can I say, I'm a softy.LadyFlameSniper wrote:Wow Jonathan, you and I have similar taste! It turns me on. lol
Hmm..I'm gonna have to check out this K-OS guy. I can't believe I've never heard of him.
Reggaeton blew up suddenly. I used to hate it so much because the drum beats were all the same. But like I said before, they combined it with other types of spanish music and now I like it a lot. I don't like Ivy Queen though. I don't think she could rap, plus she's very manly lol.

Yeah K-OS is a Canadian rapper (of Trinidadian decent), and he's not that widely known. I recommend these songs: Superstarr Part Zero, Freeze, The Anthem, The Man I Used to Be, B-Boy Stance. The first one song I listed was actually somewhat of a hit in 2002.
Ivy Queen reminds me of Lady Saw. She does sound kinda masculine. lol But I like her, especially that one song "Papi te Quiero"I always liked reggaeton, but I didn't get into it more until last year. Because I was getting more exposed to it

For those guys wondering about the Rolling Stones, I give them a hearty yes. Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want (which has a choir singing in it) from thier album Let It Bleed and She's a Rainbow from Through the Past, Darkly are good songs.
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you''ve got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.
