Regarding
Mike and this supposed math equation
are you refering to when
he's are home and everyone's interviewing him about the ticket he found and he says all that complicated stuff and his dad says "These days I have no idea what he's talking about" or something close to that?
Gawthy
And I just feel so bad for little Wonka with the metal deathtrap on his mouth.

I know, poor Willie looked so uncomfortable with all those braces and metal on him his head
Speaking of which, can anyone tell me
what Dr. Wonka said at the end when he's looking at Willie's teeth. He says "I haven't seen *blanks* like these since..." What did he say? I'm not familiar with dental terms 0__o
Bicuspid is the word you're looking for. Basically teeth with two cuspals (or points). It's amazing what you learn when you look up a dental glossary. For some reason, Dr. Wonka seemed to like that word. He mentioned those teeth at least twice.

In regard to your Mike Teavee question....
yeah, that was the scene. Frankly I got confused after he started shouting 'die die' to the video game. Then he got all technical about his discovery. I feel for the kid's parents.
.........I thought
he was talking about how to beat an enemy on his game and all that complex stuff was just video game jargon. But if he was talking about how to get the ticket in mathematical terms then that makes more sense.
Actually, during the movie there was some guy behind me who would not shut the hell up the entire time. He had the loudest, irritating laugh and I couldn't here some of the dialogue over his voice because he wouldn't shut up and die >_<. I remember he did laugh over Mike's dialogue so that's probably why I missed it. Thanks @_@

Peach:

Yes, the Mike Teevee thing:
When he got his ticket and the people were interviewing him, he was talking about breaking a code on the chocolate wrappers to figure it out. Something abuot serial numbers. It was meant to sound complicated and confusing, but that's what Wonka meant by "cracking the system", and that's why Mike said "I only had to open one bar. I don't even like chocolate."..becuase he "cracked the code".
I liked the movie...I've never read the book, which I need to do, becuase I love Roald Dahl (the damn movie people just BUTCHERED Matilda. >< one of my favorite books made into a horribly butchered movie), so I can't really compare it to that. But in comparison with the older movie..they wer very different things.

Johnny Depp was great...he was very hard for me to get used to at first, though. But once that movie got going, I was cracking up.

I personally didn't think there was too much CG at all. I loved Violet's blueberry scene, and the Oompa Loompa song and dance routines were great.

Veruca Salt made me go "squee" ^__^

Mike TeeVee really didn't annoy me as much as he seemed to annoy the rest of you ^^; I'm glad they made him a bit smarter. In the older movie, he was just...this kid who loved TV. Again, I don't know how he is in the books, but I'm glad they made him a bit more three-dimensional, by giving him an actual personality.

All in all, the movie was enjoyable.

And Peach..I can relate to you abuot annoying theater people. Our theater was PACKED with annoying teenagers. (I've got nothing against teens in general. Just annoyingly stupid ones ^^). The guy in front of me WHIPS OUT HIS CELL PHONE AND STARTS TALKING ON IT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOVIE. The gaggle of giggling girls next to us would NOT STFU. And the guy and girl behind me were making out so badly and so much, I wnated to turn around and say, "Look. I know this is probably the only chance you get to make out since you both live with your parents...but please. Take it the fuck outside." Ugh.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

I too liked Matilda and thankfully have not been subjected to the movie. I've heard too much about it to watch it. Dahl's The Witches however was made into an excellant movie with Anjelica Huston (a great actress) as the main witch. My grandma has it on a tape somewhere (along with Edward Scissorhands).

As for this movie, despite the great reviews, I don't really feel compelled to watch. I do, however, eagerly await The Corpse Bride.
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you''ve got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.

The movie has some cute parts, and I love the actress who plays Matilda, but jeez, it was butchered so badly. *shakes head*

^_^ I have The Witches on tape, and it's great. Anjelica Houston always kicks ass, though.

The theater I went to was fairly quiet except for the occasional comment from a little kid behind me. I don't have the heart to tell a little child to knock it off.

I enjoyed Veruca a lot more this time. She just had this sweet/spoiled thing going on. Like when she and violet linked arms and vowed friendship. Nothing like keeping your competition close, eh? Her in the nut room was the best. I just loved how the squirrels just tackled her and tossed her in. That whole scene was a blast.

I love the book Matilda, hated the movie. It deviated so much from the storyline. I was hoping that it would have been closer to the book. There were some scenes that I would have loved to seen played out. That and her powers leaving in the end seemed appropriate in the book because she no longer needed them. oh well, what can you do about hollywood?

Wow, I haven't been here in a laaaawwwwnnng time.

I have the book Matilda (just bought it actually) and The Witches (which I've had since age 12). I just wanted to say that the pic on page 11 (I think) of Matilda, with 3-year-old Matilda reading a newspaper twice as big as she is, is The Most Adorable Picture Ever.

I've seen both the movies Matilda (before I read the book) and The Witches (after). Anjelica Huston scared the crap out of me as a child. And I mean "regular" Anjelica Huston, not ugly-assed Grand-High-Witch Anjelica Huston. I think she still does, a little.

And I like Mara Wilson too, although she seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Dakota Fanning is the current Overly Precocious Young Female Actor, I guess. But you're right, that movie does deviate from the book a lot.

Saw it over the weekend. I think major credit goes to Deep Roy, who played the Oompa Loompas. He has to have set some sort of record for screen time in the movie, plus he sang, danced, lip-synched, mimed, and worked odd props, and I'd be very curious to see his salary vs the other actors'. Also, Johnny Depp was good in his interpretation of the character as slightly demented. Personally, I think he was more sadistic than Gene Wilder because Wilder gave the kids a chance to not misbehave, and Depp seemed to consider it inevitable. The whole sequence of the elimination of the bad kids was done well, and it was good to see some CG used for Violet's inflation.

I also was very impressed with the cinematic references, like the tributes to 2001 and The Fly ("Help me!") in the Mike Teevee scene. Also, right in the beginning, when Wonka cuts the ribbon on his factory, he hides his hand in his sleve and makes it looks like he has scissor-hands.

What I didn't like about the movie was the pacing and Wonka's backstory. The musical version spent plenty of time on the pre-factory story and a decent amount of time in the facctory. And they added in the perfectly acceptable Slugworth subplot. This one seemed to rush into the factory and rush through it (although they did include things from the book like the other kids leaving) to get to the ending. Which was what I really didn't like.

In the book and the first movie, Wonka was an antagonist, a character who was sure of himself and knew everything that was going on. Christopher Lee was good, but I didn't want to see him humanized. Plus they had to dampen the message that getting all the candy you want is a good goal. I prefer the message of the first movie: "Never forget what happened to the man who got everything he ever wanted. . . he lived happily ever after."
Things I think Are Funny Early in the Morning: If Batman were a Smurf: "Quick, Robin! We must smurf down to the Batcave and smurf the Batplane! Then we must smurf the batsmurf so we can smurf where the Joker is smurfing!"

The Croonerism Spate (explanations upon request)
Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

I saw it again today with some friends. We didn't eat anything except popcorn until it got to the part where Willie Wonka eats his first chocolate, then we all took a bite of toblerone chocolate :D

There were barely any people in the theatre I went to, so I was actually able to hear the movie and understand what the hell Mike Teevee said about the bars (the ingenious bastard that kid is).

Loved the movie even more the second time. My favorite line has to be when they're in the T.V. room and Wonka yells "MUMBLER!" when Mike's explaning how he's wrong about transporting stuff.

As for the Jack Skellington cameo....I still have no idea where he was. The only thing remotely close was when
Wonka's dad throws his candy into the fire,
during the close up there are some candies that have skelliton heads on them, but they don't really look like Jack, so the hunt still goes on 0___o.

Also, this is for anyone with the soundtrack. I was listening to the song called "The River Cruise" and it reminded me a lot of the boat in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that's in the Shadow Temple. So, being the bored, weird, obsessive person I am, I played the song right when the boat starts to move. It syncs up a bit. The movement of the boat fits the song, and when the scene changes, the music changes slightly. It's weird, kind of like the whole Pink Floyd/Wiard of Oz thing......well maybe not, but it's still something cool to check out >_>

*Nods* I agree, there. Derek and I both went, "where's Slugworth?! Where's the fizzy-lifting drink!?" They really rushed through the factory. I didn't mind the backstory, as it added some depth to the Wonka char, something that the first movie did NOT do (I'm not sure of the book, I haven't read it yet, but plan to)...but they could have done far more with the factory.

I just saw the movie with my mother yesterday. She laughed at a few parts, but I got an overall "o_O" vibe from her. I think it was Depp's performance that weirded her out. XD

In all honesty, the commercials for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory made me think that it would be terrible, so I went to see how much it would suck. The movie really surprised me, though. It was funny, Wonka's outfit is the best thing evar, and the factory made me drool.

Depp did a great job as Wonka, despite my expectations. Not that he is a bad actor, it's just rather hard for me to picture anyone other than Gene Wilder as Willie Wonka. Depp's reactions to the bad children and their various annoyances were quite entertaining.

One thing that I didn't like was the changing of the musical style for each Oompa Loompa song. The first song was perfect, and I would have loved to hear the rest of the numbers done in a similar sound. The disco and rock songs just didn't seem very Oompa Loompa-ish to me. (I'm neutral on the happy 60s song.)

The experience at the theater was okay, other than the fact that they had the volume up too high, which made it hard to understand some of the dialogue. There were only three women and about seven young kids there, and they were pretty quiet during the movie. I am pretty sure that the lot didn't get most of the jokes and references, but they got to see a shiny candy boat. Ooh, aah...
