I'm actually excited for this movie. I'm really hoping they don't ruin it like they're done with a lot of other remakes.

I was never really a big fan of the original film. It was cute and all, but something about it always annoyed me. And the singing OompaLoompas didn't help it gain any points with me either. However, they did have a good cast, that much i did give it.

I watched the trailers, was somewhat impressed with this new one. I saw all the clips and was immediately sold on it. I want to see this movie. First chance i get, i'm there. This has also made me want to run out and get the book.

This looks like a darker more interesting version. After reading Roald Dahl's 'The Witches' and 'Matilda' who knows how many times, this movie looks like it's going to live up to his style. Mr. Dahl's children's stories are twisted, but extremely enjoyable at the same time. This movie definatley makes me want to read the book. Tim Burton seems to have a similar vision at times. I couldn't have thought of a more perfection match. I can't wait to see his next movie, The Corpse Bride. It looks good too.

BTW, Frankly I thought the movie version of Matilda didn't do the book justice, but that's just my thoughts.

Slightly off topic, but still related.

[Uber fangirl mode] Yahoo has a new trailer for Corpse Bride and all I can say is "OMFG it is 100000x better than the other one and makes the movie seem even more freaking cooler. It also made me actually like the Corpse Bride, who I wasn't liking at first. See it!!! See it NOW!!!!11111" [/uber fangirl mode]

Yes, I am really going to like this movie a lot. From what I've read, the merchandise is going to be better than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Is that the same trailer that Adult Swim aired a couple nights ago? If so that trailer kicked ass and makes me want to see it. It's been a while since I've seen a stop animation film, and as I mentioned before I'm a Tim Burton fan and this movie looks pretty good.

Not really, I think it was an AS exclusive trailer from the way it was presented, since they had some cards talking about it before airing the trailer. The trailer was full-length, unlike move movie commericals.

The soundtrack comes out tomorrow, but Danny Elfman's website has clips from the cd out already. You can preview it here. If you read the notes, you'll see it says that Danny did ALL of the Oompa Loompa's voices. After listening to the songs I've come to the conclusion that Danny has an inhuman range. Seriously, the high notes and low notes I've heard this guy hit are amazing. I'm definately getting this tommorow.

Okay, I just got back from seeing it. I'm going to give my opinions on the movie and they may contain spoilers.
Personally, I liked this movie. It wasn't one of Tim Burton's best films, but definately not his worst. The music was amazing, but it's Danny Elfman, so of course it's going to be perfect. Many film crititcs were saying that it was all eye candy and no plot. While this is mostly true, the thing is that everyone knows the story, whether they've read the novel or seen the first movie. Everyone knows what's going to happen and when, and Burton couldn't just write an entirely new plot with lots of changes. But this still doesn't make it a terrible movie. It was funny and the acting was good.

One problem I had with the movie though, was what looked like an excessive use of CGI. Now I was sitting in the middle of the theatre and have bad eyesight, so maybe I'm wrong, but it sure looked like a lot of the stuff on screen was made with a computer. I hate excessive CGI, especially in a Tim Burton film because his early films used stop frame animation, instead of resorting to the lazyness of just clicking a mouse. Now I realize that a lot of things would have been hard, or even impossible, to do with out CGI, but using it when Violet turns into a blue berry (which ended up looking REALLY fake) is just awful. I'm sure it could have been done another, more physical way.

But enough about that. There were a lot of things I loved in the film. Johnny Depp's hot. Really, really hot. And the way we walks with his cane is hot. He seriously looks like a hot chocolate pimp.........uh anyway, getting back to the review ^_^;.....He's also very funny. Not only is he weird and zanny, but even a charming bastard at times with the way he treats the bratty kids. There's a seen where it shows him in Oompa Loompa land convincing the Oompa Loompa's to work for him that's pretty funny. The Oompa Loompa's also sing whenever something happens to the bratty kids. Each kids has a different song and the lyrics are from the book. Augstus has this Bollywoodish type song, Violet's is 70s funk, Veruca's is psycadelic 60s, and Mike's is hard rock. Veruca's was the best because it's this happy, hippish song and the lyrics are about the fish heads in the chute that are her new friends.

One thing that Tim Burton added was Willie Wonka's father, a dentist. During the tour, Wonka keeps having flash backs to his childhood. This was done because the ending is a bit different. I won't give any details, but I will give my reaction. At first I was thinking "......oh fuck no. God this is bad, what was Burton thinking?" But then at the very end, at the very end of this new ending I started crying, and I thought "I really, really like this ending." Yes, I admit it, I cried during Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but the music and acting was too much for me T_T. So in the end, I really liked what had happened. If you see this movie and start thinking "This ending sucks" just wait until it's all over and you might think differently.

So yeah, I liked it. I'd give it four out of five stars. Good humour, good songs, ending made me cry, Wonka takes his hat off at the end and we completely see his hair style, although his hotness level goes down a slight notch because he needs the hat to be totally pimp.
I missed the Jack Skellington cameo though. I have no idea where he could have been @_@

[offtopic side note]Okay, this is just a thought I had while watching the movie. Probably no one is going to know who I'm talking about, but if you do just listen. Is it me, or did anyone else who's seen this movie, or even watch movie clips on the internet, think that Willie Wonka resembled Harold Green from The Red Green Show? If anyone watches The Red Green Show and knows who I'm talking about, just watch CATCF with Harold in mind and you'll see some freakish resemblances between him and Wonka (ie. the way they talk, the pitch off their voices, they way they walk, there's even a part where Wonka repeats the same word in a sentence, which Harold does a lot ["Oh oh, and you know what, you know what, you know what"], and even the way Wonka laughs is similar)........either that or I'm just crazy 0___o.

I saw the movie with a friend today. The theater was freaking packed, and since she got there late we got shitty seats. -_-;

I loved the movie, I really did. Willie Wonka made the whole movie, his witty comments, and his attitude to the kids.

"Chewing gum is really gross, chewing gum I hate the most!"

The setting was outstanding, the main part of the factory gave you cavities just by looking at it! And the Sea Horse boat was freaking awesome. (is it just me, or did they cut out the part where Wonka tells the kid not to lick his boat?) The Invention Room was also great looking, and the 'Nut Room' had a cool retro look.

The casting for the kids was so funny. I soon as I saw the fat kid I was laughing my ass off, a stereotype that never gets old. (I blame Hansel and Gretal! hehe) The rich bratty girl, Varuka (?) was pretty funny. I loved how after her dad FINALLY got her a golden ticket, she asks for another pony. I hated the Mike Teavea kid though, although it does show what happens when you watch too much TV. XD

One another thing I didn't really like was..
the background story on the Upa Lumpas, and the issue with Willie's father. It just felt a bit, cliched. And the flashbacks every time Charlie says something was a bit annoying
Aside from that, I loved it. And I can't wait to see Corpse Bride!

I saw it this afternoon with a friend. I was so happy. my first time going opening day. hehe You can tell I dont' get out much

Oh my gosh, you have to see this movie. It is just too cool! My friend put it best, it's an acid trip.

I recently read the book. Except for the whole back story with his childhood and the altered ending, this movie was by far the most accurate portrail of the two. it even showed his first encounter with the Oompa Loompas and what happened to the children afterward. Tim Burton really brought the book to life. I highly recommend reading it.

I don't agree about the CGI. I rather liked it. I mean, the old way of making Violet bloat was amusing, but this one actually looked more interesting. It's obvious, but good for a laugh and besides, who says you wouldn't balloon out like that?

The songs in this one didn't annoy me as much. It gets points just for that. The other points go to Johnny. He looked good in costume. Oh, the sea horse boat was great.
I feel for the Oompa Loompa who turned out looking like cousin It from the Addams Family. Beware the hair toffee!
Over all, good movie. Make sure to read the book, it'll add to the experience.

It sounds like a good movie! But I think I'm gonna wait a bit before I see the movie. With any movie, I never go when it first opens because I hate dealing with crouds. I'll probably go see it next week or the week after.

I got to see it last night and must say I loved it. As already mentioned, this movie stays very close to the book which was great. Musically it was really good, and Johnny Depp made a great Wonka. It was interesting to add in some background to Wonka himself and give the ending a new little twist. Didn't like it at first, but like peach said, you have to wait to the very end and it was great. Oompa Loompa songs were great too, I'm glad that they were kept, but I believe they were in the book too so it makes sense that they stayed in this movie, and having them all different styles was a nice touch.

I missed the Jack Skellington cameo too, but I don't have any clue where they could've slipped him in.

Anyways, great movie, one of the better remakes out there. I'd like to see more of the books make their way to the big screen though, especially if they're given the same treatment as this one.

Sure, go ahead ^_^

To anyone who's seen the movie, can you answer something for me?
Right after the kids enter the factory and Wonka says something to each of them, he says to Mike "And you, you're Mike Teevee. You're the little devil who cracked the system." What's he talking about? What system?
Forgot to mention it but I got the soundtrack yesterday (one of the few being sold in my town). It's really neat to here all the music by itself. At the end of the album it has insturmental versions of the four kids' songs. I have Wonka's Welcome song stuck in my head now.

Speaking of which, that part
where the happy singing puppets catch on fire and look like they're decomposing was hilarious. Although a few parents in the theater got upset
That part about Mike Teavee got me confused too. but
I think it was some sort of mathmatical calculation he did or something. In this one he's suppose to be really smart.
I also liked his welcome song sequence....although that can get stuck in your head for hours. I'm still trying to get it to shut off.
That part with the puppets catching on fire and stuff was cool! One of the oh so obvious signs of who directed this film. Can you blame Wonka for not wanting to get on stage? Who knows how many test runs have had the same result.
To briefly explain the thing with Mike Teevee.
From what I could grasp of it Mike came up with a very complex mathmatical equation about how to find the winning bar of chocolate. It was very complex and wordy. It mad my brain hurt. I distinctly remember him mentioning something about distance and serial numbers.
All in all I thought it was very well done to say the least. While the music was VERY reminicent of Elfman's "Super Hero" line of work, it still brought the music to life so well done there. The cast was just as perfect. I do not think any other modern actor could have pulled of the eccentric Wonka as well as Depp did.
And I just feel so bad for little Wonka with the metal deathtrap on his mouth.
