Teacher and Student friendships/relationships

Post by Baka Kamen » Sun Jun 05, 2005 6:45 am

This isn't the horrible "Having a Student/Teacher affair" kind of thing, so let me explain why I'm making this thread:

During the three years I've been taking my Japanese class, I've had a very close relationship with my teacher. Actually, it's been a great one at that; spending time with eachother at lunch every day for the past year and a half, most of the time talking about life in general. A 'teacher's pet', if you wanna call me, I guess. It carried on to the point where I could go to her for nearly everything, unlike with my parents (of course, it's always embarrassing to go to your own parents for anything, right?)

We constantly e-mail each other, about stuff going on within the class (even talking about how poor the majority of the students are), activities, and what-not. I've really felt that she's been more of a parent to me than both my parents have been. She even asks me about things my parents would never even think about asking me (not about anything too personal, though.).

I've grown to love my teacher, as though she were my own mother. She obviously knows that I see her more of a mother than a teacher, because she treats me like I'm her own. I've even grown comfortable with calling her 'okaa-chan' (although, through e-mailing.), she even signs the e-mails with "Your haha" (meaning "Your mother").

I don't know if this is really discussable or not..

I was just wondering if any of you have had a relationship like this, or somewhat of a 'best friend' kind of relationship with any of your teachers?

Ready, steady, Discuss! (Sorry if this sounds like a horrid Livejournal post.)

No. I never even had a close-relationship with anyone.

It's difficult to have a close friendship with a teacher since most of them you only see for one year and they have many students to deal with. But I became rather good friends with my Italian teacher since I had her for three years. Also my Study Skills teacher, though I only had her for half a year, impressed her enough to have her give me a (chaste!) kiss on the cheek.

Be careful with this one, there is a bit of a pun involved. Dr. Spooner described his visit to a castle: "In the center of the fortress was the Palace Court. The gated entrance to this area was the court palace."

I really haven't. I'm nice to my teachers, I know they have a lot to deal with. *since almost every single one gets at least ONE horrid class*

I've never had that close of a relationship, but I'm a nice kid.

Can we talk about good relationships we used to have before the teacher became a grade A whiny bitch? Or is this just positive things. Because then I've got a story (more like a rant though) to tell. Mind you it's a little long ^_^;

When I was a Junior in high school, I started taking Spanish 1. I grew to really like the teacher, Senor Andrade, and spent my time after school in his room talking, becuase my fatehr couldn't come pick me up until close to 5pm. He was about in his late 50's, early 60's, and he was like an awesome grandfather. Eventually, I started helping him with the school's new computer grading system (the poor guy was so computer illiterate) and he was letting me help more and more in the classroom.

When I got to my senior year, he recommended me to be his teacher's aide, and they let me (if you have all the credits you need, and have extra spaces in the middle of the day, you can be teacher aides for credit). Since I wanted to teach anyway, I was all for it. I got to spend an hour a day basically grading papers and being superior to the Spanish 1 class full of sophomores and juniors XD (i was in Spanish 2 by this time). I still came by every day after school, and sometimes on weekends to help him out.

He had diabetes and all sorts of other problems, so I would bring him sugar free candy from work to keep him from eating the stuff he wasn't supposed to. I watched over him, an dhe watched over me. When he heard about my online boyfriend coming to visit me for prom, he was very concerned and just...sweet about it.

When i graduated, he gave me an envelope with $100 to thank me for all of my help. He told me that no matter what , I had to stay in college and become a teacher.

And I did. ^^

I haven't heard from him since abuot two years ago, when he called the candy store around christmas looking for me. We spoke a bit, and that was the last I heard from him.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

I don't have any teacher who I consider a "mother" figure, but my high school french teacher and I are very close. I consider her a friend, and a close one at that. Granted, while I was a student, I kept that line there. No matter how well we get along, we were still student and teacher. But now that I've graduated, we're actual friends.

That was so touching Tiff! :) I hope you get in contact with him soon.

I'm the same as yoshmaster. I do my work and converse occasionally with teachers but that's it.

Well, I did meet a teacher when I was young at Neopets. I didn't know she was a teacher but later we became good friends and she helped me with whatever I needed help on. And then I found out she was a teacher. She sent me birthday gifts and even a Bible. And she sent me some Neopet things even though I was no longer a fan of that. It would have been really fun if she was one of my teachers. She's too busy to come online these days unfortunately.

How nostalgic, this thread gives me this warm bubbly feeling.

Me, too. ;_; I'm really scared that he's dead or something and I never got into contact with the poor guy.

Re-reading this thread reminded me of something. Know the "baccalauréat" in France ? That's the equivalent of the "A Levels" in the U.S, I guess, you know, the exams you take after high school. My former high school is an accredited exam center so our students don't have to go to another school to sit through their papers XD . (I'll have to remind you also, if I didn't say it before, that I went to high school there from 1998 to 2001 and that I went through my International Trade degree classes there from 2002 to 2004).

Anyway, since I had no other chance for a job, Mom told me they needed a new secretary for the A levels period. So I took on the offer, knowing that I was bound to see former teachers whom I really liked (like the Maths teacher who just "saved" me from Math Doom, or like the Economics teacher who, even though losing her 16 year old son during the school year, managed to stay to teach and I got a decent grade on the final exam last year T_T ...) .

And one of the encounters with the teachers just reminded me of the reasons why I wanted to become one, and why I understood them so much. It was the first year of highshool, 1998-1999. It was a math teacher. It was almost the end of the year and he was trying to teach us stuff. But most of the class acted like total asses that day and just went berserk. I almost cried cause I was looking at the teacher, just lost and without authority. At some point he gave up, saying "do whatever you like". And I couldn't help but thinking it was not fair so I just tried something to comfort him: we played with a little enigma my uncle had given me two days before (like, I have three jars of different capacities, one of them is full of wine, how do I make it so that the two following jars contain the same amount of wine ? - which I had resolved in less moves than my uncle at the time, HA :D) and it looked like it made him happy to see one student interested in him.

Well, last week I saw him and asked him if he remembered. Apparently he didn't really remember, but I'm happy he hasn't gone nuts since then. That, and I wanna be a teacher cause I want to repay all the teachers who worked hard for me to become what I became, for those who went nuts over students cause the students were asses, for those who do their best yet just meet criticism from stupid parents, and, quite frankly...

Cause teachers rock.

THANK YOU ALL GREAT TEACHERS AROUND THE WORLD!

I've never had a very close relationship with any of my teachers while i've been in school.

My 9th grade science teacher and I got along well, but I had to transfer after the second month of school. ¬_¬ Me and my history teacher at my new school (an acadamy, so I have to deal with her for another three frickin' years) will never get along well. Maybe it's because I "accidentally" called her Mrs. Bobblehead infront of the entire class. She deserved it... She really is a bobblehead, too.
