Texas Child Suspended After Hugging Aide

WACO, Texas -- School administrators gave a 4-year-old student an in-school suspension for inappropriately touching a teacher's aide after the pre-kindergartner hugged the woman.

A letter from La Vega school district administrators to the student's parents said that the boy was involved in "inappropriate physical behavior interpreted as sexual contact and/or sexual harassment" after he hugged the woman and he "rubbed his face in the chest of (the) female employee" on Nov. 10.

DaMarcus Blackwell, the father of the boy who attends La Vega Primary School, said he filed a complaint with the district. He said that his son doesn't understand why he was punished.

"When I got that letter, my world flipped," Blackwell said in a story in Sunday's editions of the Waco Tribune-Herald.

La Vega school district officials said student privacy laws prevented them from commenting.

After Blackwell filed a complaint, a subsequent letter from the district said the offense had been changed to "inappropriate physical contact" and removed references of sexual contact or sexual harassment from the boy's file.

Administrators said the district's student handbook contains no specific guidelines referring to contact between teachers and students but does state that inappropriate physical contact will result in a discipline referral.

The La Vega school district, which has five schools, covers about 30 miles around Waco.

It's getting to the point where we're almost afraid to hug our students, because of shit like this.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard of recently (and there are many ridiculous items in the news).

A 4 year old boy guilty of touching in a 'sexual manner' is ludicrous. The teacher needs to re-evaluate her decision to teach youngsters and seek other employment if this is what she thinks is an appropriate response.
I am quite inclined to agree....This is just...bullshit.

Now, I'm not going to say that some four year olds don't know about sexual/inappropriate actions, because a lot of htem DO. It's on the media, in their homes, and in their faces daily.

But that doesn't mean that if a four year old HUGS his teacher, and presses his face into her chest, it equates a sexual action.

Children NATURALLY nuzzle, rub, and touch, ESPECIALLY at that age. It fascinates them. It's how they explore. I have a child in my class who, if I wear a skirt or nylons, will touch my legs ALL DURING GROUP TIME just to feel it. And it's completely, 100% innocent. And how do I deal with it? By calling the principal and having him hauled away? NO. I gently move my leg away, and say "Sweetie, pay attention to the book and not Ms. Wood's legs, okay?" And he stops.

When I was that age, I would nuzzle my mother in the same manner. It's a NATURAL RESPONSE, something that is INSTINCT for them.

There's something seriously wrong with our society if we equate a four year old child nuzzling his teacher lovingly as somethign dirty.

... okay... I really hate our society now.

4 year old? That... no. that's just stupid. that's like saying me hugging my younger cousin is incest, or something else retarded like that.

Kids are naturally... 'Clingy' is one way to say it. I always latched onto one of my parents at times... and it's very much the same. This is just retarded.

yeah, i'm sure a 4 year old is really hugging his teacher just to be sexual.
just like tiff said. its natural. i hugged my teachers when i was little. i've been hugged by little kids i just met for no other reason than they wanted a hug. and i'm sure PUNISHING the poor boy will help. now he learns that hugs are bad. some people are SO STUPID.

my brother got this message in an e-mail a while back. maybe one of you can explain it to me.

This is a direct quote from it:

"In the middle of the night, I was walking by the sea,
and baby baluga jumped out from amongst the bushes.
SO one day Mr. Gregor exclaimed "Why do skater normals
have no preppy either ?!?!?!" So I wanted to watched.
or Maybe if I wanted to watch it then I had a dream
that countless historian lost their credit but i dont
Remember what it was. I don't like you but can I have
your autograph. No one wants your autograph so I
started to cry in the pizza shop. Where did Ryan go?
He must have moved to Ohio."

Thats it. no other context or anything.

Was it someone your brother knew? Otherwise, it would be likely that this was spam or some sort of nonsense.
But this e-mail sure is weird o_ô

That's most definitely spam; I've gotten messages with random snippets of what looks like book passages before.

One of these days, it's going to happen to one of our kids from my school..the interstate is RIGHT by the school, with basically no barrier except a small concrete one. Any child could easily cross the parking lot and climb over onto the highway.

God... That's a horrific thought. There really should be more than just a little concrete barrier between the school and the interstate. Just goes to show how much the school really cares, right?

And yeah... That woman from that story is an idiot. "Oh, he got out again." What the Hell kind of response is THAT? Doesn't anybody watch their kids or give a shit about them anymore??

Well, to be honest, the school doesn't own the highways. What can they do besides complain about it? They can't throw up a fench themselves if it's not their property. I'm honestly not sure who is responsible for that, but it still scares me when I take m ykids across the parking lot to the playground.
