The English Stereotype

Post by Rainbow » Thu Oct 30, 2003 4:40 am

What do you people think the stereotype is of wealthy English people? Do you hold your own stereotypes? Are there any English people here who know of a different stereotype than the one we have here in America?

There's one I'm especially curious about. Do people here think an Upperclass English accent sounds especially intelligent? I've heard some people think that speaking with an accent like that makes people sound smarter, and I KNOW that's be some stereotype.

In this one Sonic the Hedgehog episode, Robotnik made a genius chip that was supposed to go in this big thing he had attached to the top of his head. But it ended up that Grounder (the robot that talks with the stereotypical dummy voice) got it in HIS head, and then he started talking like a wealthy English person! That's probably the most blatant example of that stereotype in my opinion.

Actually, it's not. At least, the same traits may be in the stereotype, but from what I've heard they're viewed in different ways.

That wasn't the question, though, but thanks for the stereotype info. I was asking about the way the English are perceived, by themselves and by others.

I just meant that I don't want one of the moderators coming in here and saying that the American stereotype isn't the topic. I guess we could start a new topic about nationality stereotypes in general, if anyone wanted.

I remember on another board that I used to post on there was a discussion about how bad guys in American movies always have English accents. I can't think of any previous examples off the top of my head, but the English dub of Shaman King airing on Fox Box seems to back up the English accents = evil theory.

I thought of three. 1:"A New Hope. 2:"The Empire Strikes Back". 3:"Return of the Jedi".

I'm writing this Sailor Moon/Green Lantern crossover AU fic called "Emerald Sunrise". It's a hybrid of Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi, Romance, and Comedy. It's about Ami (Sailor Mercury) getting a new boyfriend who just happens to be a member of The Green Lantern Corps. I'm also throwing in some other characters from other animes and some old Hanna-Barbera cartoons from the late '60's early '70's. I'm also illustrating it as well. Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it.

Also, if you look at dubbed anime...the high-class elitists are always given a Birtish accent..so are the smarter or older people, and a LOT of the villains.
Some examples:
Ami in BSSM
Luna in BSSM
Eboshi-Sama in Princess Mononoke
In the BSSM episode where Usagi goes to "Princess School"...all of the butlers have British Accents.

Joey: The question is, Rachel, does he like you? ''Cuz if he doesn''t, then it''s all just a moo point.
Rachel: Huh...a...moo point?
Joey: Yeah. It''''s like a cow''s opinion. It doesn''t matter....It''s moo.

That's rather interesting, since in the original, the Princess Rose was supposed to be English anyway, so it makes sense she'd have English butlers.

I'm sorry if that was insulting, I just thought it was interesting. By the way, I messed up...that's Countess Rose, not Princess. I found it interesting because I've never seen that episode in the DiC dub; I've just seen the original subtitled as well as my fandub of it, so I did not know that. I just thought it was funny that they dubbed her with English butlers, when she probably HAD English butlers in the original. It makes me wonder whether whoever hired the butler voices knew that they probably were English in the original.

I doubt it. They probably just gave it to them.

Blah, but see, now, all evil people are French :p :p :p

In France, one stereotype would be the thing with weather, the food (MINT BEEF, DUH!! and then we get called Froggies lol) and as for the people... it's always been associated with being "posh" or "snob" or something.
